That "gewalt" was the most violent and frightening out of any version I've seen, kudos to her!
A compliment for the accompanist: It is a trememdously difficult art to accompany singers. Wolfram Rieger takes the task with majesty and mastery. He is following closely Elisabeth's lead, expression and emphasis with great sensitivity, rising to power with her and muting the instrument cleanly. His attack on the final notes of the work synchronized its lightning with its audible thunder! Once again, dude NAILED those last notes on that piano.

This entire performance is incredible, but THAT GEWALT IS EVERYTHING. Even just her change in expression at the beginning of the phrase leading up to it. Probably the best I've seen in terms of acting.
The monster loses patience and make his true appearance at 3:35... until then, his sweet legato is very seductive. Thank you for an outstanding performance!

What I love about this version is that it embraces the performance side of this piece. A lot of other versions that I've seen focus on the vocal aspects and I think they forget that the physical storytelling helps to develop and differenciate characters in a way that can't be done through voice alone. Honestly one of my favorite versions.
A big BRAVA for both the singer and the pianist! I just started to learn this piece, but I fell in love with it six years ago. The interpretation is beyond perfection! I've never seen/heard any singer sing this piece with such intense emotional, and colour changes. Thank You so much for posting!

Unbelievably moving performance by this duo! Since first hearing this Lied 40 years ago I've never heard a more wonderful rendition.
I love the way the accompanist bounces up and down on the piano stool as though he's in the saddle of the horse.
Terrific performance. What is so satisfying about her interpretation is not only how vividly and clearly she delineates the three characters, both vocally and physically, but the fact that she does so through impeccable singing. Also, she and the excellent pianist judge the "build" of the song perfectly. Kulman has a special gift for language, vocal color and characterization - listen to her wonderful CD of Liszt songs, or Mussorgsky's The Nursery. Thank you for posting! UPDATE: Interesting that the responses from German-speaking posters are overwhelmingly positive.

Of all the different versions of Erlkönig UA-cam is pushing at me, his has to be the best so far. The soloist clearly differentiates and dramatizes the roles of narrator, father, son, and elf king. The accompanist adds to the drama with a sensitive and expressive interpretation of a devilishly difficult keyboard part.

This was an incredible performance. I’ve heard the composition many times but still don’t have the German words memorized. When she got to the part where the Erlking says to the child, “If you don’t go with me willingly, then I’ll take you by force,” at “force” which I believe is “Gewalt,” the change of expression was frighteningly convincing. She also did a wonderful job of playing the four characters. Brava!

Her characters are well-developed and easily identified, her voice and projection are masterful. The Narrator is urgent and deliberate, the Father strong and comforting, the Child frightened and plaintive, and the Erlking evil and manipulative! She's a brunette and easy on the eyes too.
Everybody has ben saying this, but that "Gewalt" is really something else. Terrifying and on-spot-in-character

Yes, a very civilized gesture, reflecting the collaborative nature of this piece. I first heard this work on a shellac 78 disc, part of my late father's collection; I was about 7 years old, I knew no German, couldn't understand a word ... but something about the music grabbed me. And has never let me go for the subsequent 60 years. I have always been a bit wary about female-voice interpretations (sorry), but this version by Elisabeth is wonderful.

Liebe Elisabeth Kulman, leider habe ich erst vor kurzem durch das Stichpunkt-Magazin, bei dem ich mitarbeite, von Ihnen erfahren.
Ich habe sehr viele Videos von Ihnen auf UA-cam angeschaut. Das Video, das mir buchstäblich am meisten den Atem raubt, ist Ihre Interpretation des Schubertschen Erlkönigs. Ich habe es ungefähr zehn Mal nacheinander angesehen. Mir stockt der Atem, ich zittere mit.
Ich habe dieses Werk in vielen Jahren als Lehrerin für Musik und Englisch an einem Gymnasium in der höheren Mittelstufe besprochen, auch in Synopse mit den Vertonungen von Reichardt und Loewe, und ich kenne gefühlt acht verschiedene Interpretationen von Schubert. Ihre Interpretation stellt alle bisher mir bekannten in den Schatten. Sie haben nicht nur eine wunderschöne Stimme, sondern auch eine riesengroße Strahlkraft. Sie verkörpern die vier Rollen des Liedes - Erzähler, Vater, Knabe, Erlkönig - nicht nur, Sie SIND diese Rollen im Moment des Singens.

For a stunningly beautiful woman, Elisabeth's facial expressions are captivating, and sometimes frightening. If she were a gunfighter or poker player, I'd WANT to lose to her.

I have never seen and heard a male performer be able to smoothly transition between the four male characters in this story. The Narrator and Father characters are blurred in expression, the Child is weakly approached and the sheer terror is not developed. The Erlking comes off as a mildly confused malignancy. Elisabeth's characters are clearly identifiable, and her transitions of portraying each is deliciously seamless to the point of clean separation and no blurring. Her Erlking is not effeminate, but keenly persuasive and witty, charming and vicious. The character's line "Und bist du nicht willig, so brauch' ich Gewalt" sent a visceral sense of fright through me, and I'm 6'2", 270lbs and look like an old biker!
She's good but she doesn't give me the chills like Jessye Norman does. Except for the "gewalt".

I feel like a man should sing this piece

I find that the gestures she makes look very unreal and contrived. Good i deas but i would focus on the connection with the audience. I dont think that in this type of singing it is very important that you (try to) act so perfectly. It is more about which emotion can one get out of your gestures and your body, so the audience should be thrilled by your whole person and the style of singing you do. The Erlkönig is also not a very clear and easy ballad to understand. Te particular meaning is very unclear at the first times of reading so espacially then i think her clear gestures she made take away the mysterious vibe the ballad contains.
Franchement, contrairement à la majorité des commentaires qui suivent, moi je dis que c'est le grand néant, y'a rien, la voix est sans aucune couleur elle chante à plat, juste avant je venais d'écouter Sumi Jo, ben là je suis passé de la lumière à la nuit complète, vraiment triste !!!

C'est la première version du Erlkonig que j'ai écouté sur UA-cam...j'étais pas fan du Lied. Puis j'ai écouté celle de Jessye Norman...maintenant c'est mon Lied préféré. L'interprétation est si importante, surtout là où l'on doit jouer trois personnages à la fois, pour un public qui ne parle pas forcément allemand.
Etwas unnatürliche Stimme, da fehlt Energie. Zu dunkel, seltsam, das ist langweilig, obwohl technisch ganz gut und richtig, aber ohne Energie. Ich würde im Konzert tatsächlich einschlafen. Wenn ich da an Fischer-Dieskau denke...
