Hi Dave, you were talking about sound underwater and another big part of that as far as we're concerned is that all cyprinids (large family of fish including most of our freshwater species aside from cats, pike, perch, trout and salmon) have what is known as a Weberian apparatus which is a set of tiny bones connecting the inner ear to the swim bladder via the first four vertebrae. This arrangement of bones and organs allows amplified detection of minute changes in water pressure (sound is waves of pressure changes) kind of like how you can feel sound by lightly pressing your fingertips against the skin of a drum so in an environment where sound travels very well it could be suggested that fish such as carp have extremely sensitive hearing. It could also be expected that because of the way fish brains are designed that they are extremely reactionary to sound stimulus in both a positive and negative fashion depending on the nature and volume of the sound. Fish brains are pretty simple in design (not to be mistaken for stupid) and very different to our complex, mammalian brains. In simple terms you could divide the brain into two halves, instinctive and rational, in human terms this would be the difference between instinctively retracting your hand from stimulus such as an unseen nettle sting without thinking about it and rationally being careful not to put your hand in the nettles in the first place because you know it's going to hurt. Human brains are mostly dedicated to rational thought whereas fish (as well as insects and reptiles) are mostly dedicated to instinctive thought processes. In the case of sound stimulus and fish brains, because the nerve paths responsible for transmitting and processing sound are going through the spine which is connected directly to the reactionary centre of the brain (known as the reptilian brain/basal ganglia) any loud stimulus is going to cause a fight/flight reaction. This is of course in the most simple terms and there are layers of learned behaviour piled on top, fish can be observed to distinguish between the sound of a lead going in and a spod going in which can stimulate very different reactions, one may cause them to flee whereas the other may cause them to rush towards it in hope of some food depending on their learned behaviours within their environment. I used to fish a tiny little pond that was less than an acre in size and the fish in there were canny old things which would disappear for hours if you stepped too heavily or even lowered a lead in without enough care but when the farmer came round on his super loud tractor cutting the grass with a trailer bouncing along behind it the fish wouldn't show the slightest bit of fear. Those were some of my favourite fish to watch, they knew all the tricks and were absolute masters of their tiny environment, I've watched the biggun arrive at a baited spot with his escort of smaller friends only to hang back and let them enthusiastically trip any traps while he decided whether it was safe to feed or whether he'd get as far away from the spot as possible, I'd also watched a fish suck all the fluorescent goo off a critically balanced pop-up without moving it at all and seen other fish sucking bait off the bottom from while suspended a foot or two above it and leaving nothing but the rigs. Deeply frustrating but enlightening to watch.
@@davelane1996 sorry, bit of an essay! I did a degree in biology and then freshwater ecology and spent a lot of time doing all sorts of experiments with fish both as part of my studies and also out of curiosity. Having watched them learn to overcome problems through trial and error it is, as you say, amazing that we ever catch anything but at the same time sometimes they just make dumb mistakes or seem to forget how to overcome a problem they've easily solved before. Idiot savant is the best way to describe carp intelligence I feel. Don't even get me started on octopuses...
Hmm k1 in the summer. 32acres and only 3 or 4 swims you want to fish, forget about the rest of it. Im talking 20 yrs ago but it will be the same now, 6ft or 16ft . Funnily enough i tried for some in the edge up the deep end in those 2 same swims you fished , i blanked there too, they didnt go there to eat. Sounds like briggsy was in the kennel fishing down to the corner, you can make it look easy there if you know your onions. Mind you, a grand, i think i paid 90quid on a cemex close season ticket, that was long enough for me there, still its a bit of angling innit.
Found this channel today.. a carp fisher for 40 years myself & this was a brilliant watch, interesting, well filmed & unblemished by product placements… Wondering if those Olives would be worth a go on the hair.. 😬 Tight lines mate - Subscribed👍🏻
Excellent video Dave, congratulations on the birth of your grandson. Thought you were going for the high jump record with that pole set up 😂 See you had your priorities right bbq and a can of cider before you put the rods out. Some nice fish you filmed under that bridge, that's the reason the big ones aren't getting caught. There laying up there.

@@phillallen01 Be aware though, maddi is a cross, a true bred Mioritic can be very large indeed. They are not the best indoors and are bred for guarding sheep. A far better option and very similar would be a bearded collie, my last dog padwar was a bearded cross old English.

Nice one Dave did you see when you had the fish on the top there was a cloud in the clouds 🤣also how did you adapt your baiting up with the bushwaker spoon 👍
