no, joint compound is the perfect material if you use it in thin layers

For this 55x55 cm canvas, I used 100x100 cm wire mesh, always approximately double the size of the canvas

you can go for the first layer with sandpaper grit 80 or 100 and for the last layers with sandpaper grit 220 or 240
