@@brendanzhang7488 as far as I know the show isn't very historical accurate and besides someone has to adapt a real person into a character, a period of time into a story. it's a lot of work and the writers did great.
Marial was foolish for betraying Catherine in this scene. She was so desperate to regain her position in court that she could have cared less about their friendship and the kindness Catherine showed to her. Had she remained loyal Catherine would have restored her position once taking the throne and probably even elevated her higher.
She was mad that Catherine lied to her. Catherine said she doeant want to kill archie (the priest that raised marial) , but she ordered orlo to kill him anyway. This is a clear betryal in her eyes. SO it makes sense that she wants to take things in her own hands. 1. She knew she'd be killed if it was known she was involved in the assassination attempt. Archie already knows she was involved twice at this point. So she takes his advice of taking advantage of the situation. 2. A failed assassination means She has to wait longer to get her title. Plus like I said. I dont think she trusts Catherine or her ability to do it anymore. She failed to prove that she has the guts to kill *TWICE* by now. The ONLY thing stupid about this is her litrally risking Catherine being killed. She knows peter is unpredictable at best and DOESN'T know if he loved her enough to not kill her. So her saying "he won't kill you" is a bullshit excuse. She chose her life over Catherines. Simple as that. I dont see them keeping a friendship in the second season.

He proved that with Catherine when he mocked and ridiculed her ideas regarding the future advancement of science and arts. It was so gratifying when she bit off one of his fingers after he touched her without her permission. But, I do agree with you at the moment about the two of them more than likely not being friends after this.
@@k.a._135 I agree with most off this. Marial was just as justified in her actions as Catherine has been in her own. They both are motivated by survival and a desire to perserve the things they love. Marial loves archie he has been family and shield long before Catherine appeared and he has proven trustworthy and loyal (with regards to her). Catherine violated her trust and lied to her face repeatedly. With that said, I think that Marial was certain that Peter wouldn't kill Catherine, not out of love for her but out of love for himself, there was no way he was going to kill a child that was made of him.

I never thought of peter loving himself to the point that he would want to keep all his babies. Even if he didnt love her, I can see him at least waiting till she gives birth to kill / punish her. Its an interesting senario to explore. Either way, I really like the way things turned out in the end. I can't wait to see the second season💕.

And it is so meaningful when the motivation of each is so clearly stated. No one is plain (even the cruel Peter can be relatable in the end), no one is perfect, it is all about intentions and ambitions colliding.
Ik he isn't a good person but I actually felt bad for him in this scene, he just caught feelings for her and then finds out she just wanted to dethrone him 😥💔

Peter actually had a strict mother who was cold to him. I think, it's hard to live without mothers love. He also grew up knowing that he would become an emperor, he had permissiveness.

peter was far from likeable in history, he actually was loved by his parents but in real life just child like and not interested in ruling russia in his short reign. Although he has some progressive changes, he also did a lot of notably questionable things to Russia. Also this Peter was the grandson of Peter the Great but they changed it in the show.

This is such a clever way of showing how people can fall in love with a narc when they suddenly do something out of character. Funny how in contrast, Marial has been such a great character and yet we bring out the pitchforks when she risks it all to get out of slavery.
