  • Several steam engines operating under live steam. Also a nice look at the boiler that supplies their steam. The large one features Corliss valves. Filmed at Sycamore Ill. Steam Show--2011.

    That is one heck of a piece of engineering!
    Thank you sharing it with us!

    Thanks for shooting the sign with the history of the 8hp engine.
    My father graduated from Steinmetz High School in 1936 so this engine was there when he was a student.

    That first little engine was taken out of service only in 1993??? Wow, this ol' anachronism must have had the ghost of Charles Steinmetz himself looking after it. The last in-service steam engine I operated was the stoker engines on some already very old B&W boilers in the 1970s. Turbines just don't have the same allure. Thanks for keeping these old thumpers alive. With a little spit and grease they'll run another 100 years. Great video!

    Thanks for shring this with us. I've always had a fascination for old mechanical machines, and to see them run is a gift

    Beautiful engine. Amazing to think just how fast these engines can actually run, though it is rarely seen nowdays.

    We have a very similar Corliss ammonia compressor (as well as a Corliss stationary factory engine) at the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum here in Vista, CA,

    I visited the Kewanee boiler factory in the mid 80's , I was surprised how old school the factory was, it was like stepping back in time 100 years ago .
    The made a great product ,hated to see them close up.

    I'd love to hear an explanation of Corliss valve operation. There's just too much going on for me to figger it out.

    You should consider visiting us up here in Western NY for the Pageant of Steam, held every year just outside of Canandaigua (health and finances permitting).
    I hope to capture some good videos this year. :D

      You are correct Michael. They have a wonderful Corliss that operates during the fall show. They have tours 2-4 times per day during the show.

    With all the so called modern technology which I think is complete bull shit. These engines should be in operation today but the illoustrous managment wants equipment that a single individual can operate or there new sologan " Lets go green" which does not work. I'll take the steam engines and steam boilers for heating, process or any other application PERIOD! Great video Thank you.

    • @FarewellChorus
      @FarewellChorus 10 років тому +2

      But the electricity that powers this modern technology is all generated using steam. Steam power never went away; it's just gotten more efficient over the years.

      I agree with you 100 percent when it comes to comparing these graceful but powerful steam engines to some of the raucous motors that power sports cars & motorcycles, for example.
