    There is a typo in the video, it should be simply Aspen wood shavings, not Aspen pine shavings. There are different types of wood.

    My two boys have a huge compound that is like the size of a dining table. It’s 3 c&c kits together, with the cage tops from a couple of Oxford kits. I just use blankets for bedding. I have 2 bottles (1 in each cage top), 2 food bowls, a bunch of different hides and chews all strategically set up. My Jay and Silent Bob live like kings.

    I’m so glad I found your channel! As a new piggy mom a year ago, I didn’t have a clue and now I have 9 piggies living their best life in their c&c cages with fleece. I even learned how to sew through this process. It is so rewarding having GP. We always watch your videos while we clean the cages. Thank you Scotty!

    I use chenille under hay box and under all the houses. I even have chenille cage liners. Those are so amazing at how well they absorb.

    The C&C cages seem like the best, they are so adjustable. Thanks to you, we get see many ways that they can be used and designed, to fit your and their needs. Wire bottom cages should be destroyed, unless used for an actual rescue, where you can put a fleece or blanket in for an animal's comfort. Any type of wire or wooden cage are useless, they create so many hazardous problems. Fleece pads look perfect for the smaller ones in our lives. Cleaning is Essential for care, dirty homes give health issues!!! I absolutely love the guinea pig ASMR going on in the background, it's calming and comforting. Oh and very piggy positive, it makes me happy. Thanks for this, you're always making videos that many don't seem to ❤

    Very informative video, Scotty 👍. Fleece is brilliant It was a game changer for me and it's so well made. My washing lines look very decorative with the fleeces hanging on them 😂. The wooden tunnels are good. Natural and won't be dangerous if chewed. Thank you Scotty 👍🐹🐹🐹🐹

      I'm pretty sure the colorful wooden tunnels are made with a chewable safe color.

    I love bath mats as the hay doesn't stick to them. You can't get uhaul in the UK, so I use zorb as my absorbent layer when I sew fleece ❤

    Another very informative video, Scotty! So actually, I use the chenille bath mats in the kitchen areas because I find the hay comes off of them way easier than regular fleece. I’ve had great luck with them so far 😊 I use some waterproof absorbent bed pads a friend gave me for underneath the chenille mats. The rest of the cage has regular fleece and pee pads in their hideys

    I'm guilty of using the "Channel" rugs, however, I use them on top of their regular fleece that covers their cages, to alternate between complete cage cleanings. Also, keep a spray bottle with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water. Organism and other creepy crawlers can't survive the acidic nature of vinegar..

    • @ScottysAnimals
      @ScottysAnimals  2 місяці тому +3

      If the chenille mats are working that's great! As far as spring vinegar I would not spray anything and put it back. If you want to spray it and then wash it that's great, I have found free and clear detergent is all I need to keep my fleece clean. I wash them every few days. If they are really wet or dirty I pre-rinse them.

    • @trinaduke40
      @trinaduke40 2 місяці тому

      The rugs do work well, helping to freshen up between full cage changes.. the vinegar mixture is for when you are cleaning the coroplast before replacing with the clean cage liner ..🙂 It is perfectly safe for the guinea pigs but the acidic nature of vinegar will actually kill mold flat...

    Awesome video! Cage size is important and oh my gosh, how right not to clutter, though so hard to do with one of my piggies who is attached and needs to have certain things in her home, but is better now that Clementine is in her life. Rotating ofen and enrichment helps! with two skinny guinea pigs, keeping up with cleaning is a must! I use fleece and multiple pee pads and even then, there are days I have had to do a full change two days in a row as my Clementine likes to miss the pee pads,lol! Seriously, the girls do get in the routine and they popcorn when I change out and especially when I rotate their hides and bunk beds--bunk beds are a favorite ,second to the space houses. They then don't mind when you change out and actually get excited! In the fall, I add a loft ,but keep it simple. Scotty's right, don't complicate when making your cage---I hate saying cage, I always say home, but i think if you think about it from your guinea pigs view and not your mind, it turns out best as it is for them and not you.

    Great video with useful information. I'm so glad that I changed to fleece. It's easier on my 8 year old piggie's feet and he doesn't have to have spa days so often. Thanks for all you do.❤🐹

    I bought 2 cages from TS 2' X 2' and spliced them together and made a 2 X 4' cage for my piggie. Yes, it has a wire bottom but I place fleece, fleece liners, bath mats, and human bath towels and wash clothes to catch the urine. My piggie's feet never touch the wire. The reason I bought these is because it keeps my piggie safe with a top on it. I also have a litter box with sunseed bedding in it with her hay and she runs to the litter box and goes to the bathroom there. Daisy loves her horizontal cage and does her zoomies, with places to hide, relax and a cuddle bed as well. Every day we sit on the long sofa together and she runs all over the sofa and mostly on my chest to watch TV with me and looks around.

      Switching to a C&C cage is a lot cheaper than you might imagine. Also much easier to clean and lasts a really long time. The grids are 14 in and therefore a 2x4 is over 10 Sq Ft.

    I have a quick question, fall and colder weather here. I want to keep my guinea pigs. We live on a farm and right now there in a pretty spacious coop. FYI there’s galvanized steel and wood we made 100 times strong than most chicken coops it built into the side of our barn. But the worry is heating. We have large chicken brooder plate that we’ve raised as high as it can go lots of space for guineas to go under. I’ve never used it before for the guineas but I worry about safety. There’s no heat out at our barn. I’m winterizing there cage and I would love so tips ❤

    My two boys are grid mates. They each have their own 12.5 square foot kaytee open living cage with pine shavings, a fiddle sticks tunnel and a space house. They got in a fight once and one got a ripped ear so they cannot live together

    • @ScottysAnimals
      @ScottysAnimals  2 місяці тому

      It sounds like they're living a great life now, and I bet they enjoy communicating through the grids

    You literally cannot beat fleece and bedding scottie! You can layer up, rip it up quick and wash every couple of days. My 4 piggies love snuggling up in fleece. Everyone keeps their dressing gowns for me to cut up and use, hey from the uk

    I have not once gotten my fleece to properly wick. No matter how much I wash it, it just doesn't wick. So I put those noodle mats on top of my fleece 🤷. I don't know if it's a hard water problem or what.

    • @ScottysAnimals
      @ScottysAnimals  2 місяці тому

      I use free and clear. Are you by any chance using fabric softener? Fabric softener ruins fleece's ability to wick

    • @bigislandchickens6747

      @@ScottysAnimals no fabric softener and I do use free and clear. I realized shortly after posting this comment that people are washing Thier fleece in hot water. My facility only uses cold water in the washer 😕

    Question: Would saying I have a 2x4 C&C cage be enough or would a picture be needed? I am planning on rescuing a pair of piggies when the time comes and would rather be prepared than get there and be told I needed a picture. Been a proud owner of exclusively piggies for over 15 years, so would be able to show my knowledge in taking care of them, yet would be devastated if I did all the efforts to find and get there only to find out I needed an actual picture of the cage. Which has been set up as a kind of altar in memory of my girls since they passed last year and would rather not disturb it until it is time to put my new pair into the cage.
    I also realize that the actual rules are different for each rescue place, but I would think the LA Piggie Rescue would be a great benchmark to take notes from.

    • @SoCalGuineaPigRescue
      @SoCalGuineaPigRescue 2 місяці тому +1

      So all rescues are different but here at SCGPR we require a 2x4 c&c cage for 2 piggies and we do need to see a picture of it before we can bring you the piggies. This just makes sure that people are actually providing what they say and it allows us to make any suggestions for changes if necessary. I sure wish we lived in a society where we could take peoples word for it but sadly we’ve all had people tell us one thing and then do another.

    • @RiptornRory
      @RiptornRory 2 місяці тому

      @@SoCalGuineaPigRescue Very understandable. I will be prepared with a picture of my cage then, could simply use an older one with my last set of piggies in it but that's sacred to me and doesn't really show the whole cage.
      And it is sad that we can't take people at their word in current day, but where those of us who are brutally honest don't get enough credit.
      Do you think just a picture of the cage as is (the base set up without bedding and the caging being stored in the corner) would be good enough? I'd also show the two castles (hideys/pigloos) that I have, one being the medium one and the other a large.

    Puppy pee pads on Amazon. Reusable and wash well. I love them for my boys but they do need changing every day.
