"I _need_ to believe that there is some greater power that is forgiving me for being the monster I am."
-Jim Gaffigan
"need"
Fact: most people go around feeling like they need a big forgiving hug. Sometimes daily. Sometimes hourly. (Even this atheist understands that much.) Maybe we just need more forgiving hugs.
Yes, even atheists need hugs too. I don’t trust people who say “I’m not a hugger.” It’s not human. I don’t need that negativity in my life. C’mere, bring it in Greg.
@@StaceofCakes even atheists???!!! Hugging is a human act not a religious right.
@@lynnsmithershubbard1896-There are no atheists in Fox-Holes. Remember this one? I am an agnostic. They have done many scientific studies proving that people with a strong faith in God. Do heal better. Like Gaffigan's wife, she was very lucky, she didn't die from that HUGE Brain Tumor! Couples who share a strong faith, are more happily married. These are FACTS!
If Jim's a monster, the world needs more of them.
You might be right, but who knows what really goes on his head when no one is watching?
He finds Paella disgusting, I think he's a monster
@@rstrid5505- Who knows what really goes on in anyone's head?
eisbaerenhasenzahn Jesus is the way.
He just reminded me that I’m a monster too.
The praying hands emoji indicates "Namaste" which means I salute the god within you. Here in Asia it's used to show that you apologize for a faux pas, or to greet others politely or to show that you appreciate a kindness. We don't use it to mean I'm praying for you.
Swadee krap
I thought 🙏 was a high five?
precisely, that's the joke in a nutshell. Thanks for explaining it to people who may not know
Dennis Walker: Thanks for the clarification.
I love this guy. He's just an ordinary decent guy. He doesn't have to "push the boundaries" to make you laugh. And I'm an atheist.
Another atheist/agnostic/skeptic here ✊🏾 and I enjoy Colbert's political satire/late night comedy.
I always wonder why we have to add our atheist identy whenever complimenting a catholic. We shoudl really just be able to compliment them if we feel like ot shouldnt we?
Irish Price seriously. It’s irrelevant.
I love this guy. He's just an ordinary decent guy. He doesn't have to "push the boundaries" to make you laugh. And I ate spaghetti for dinner last night.
lol I get why you mentioned being an atheist. The world hasn't reached a point yet where people of different backgrounds are really expected to get along, as ridiculous as that sounds to most people.
It's the same reason every time a black guy does something nice for a white guy, or vice versa, it gets shared on facebook with a title like "love not hate" or something lol.
I appreciate that people are trying to set an example.
I love this dude and I know how supportive a church family can be. Mine has come together for me and my family throughout my entire life. I was diagnosed with stage 3 brain cancer about three years ago. Needless to say my family and I were having a tough go of it. Those folks provided emotional support for us all the way through my surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. I consider myself really blessed to have such a wonderful group of people thinking about and praying for me.
ps- I survived. Medical University of South Carolina brain surgeons removed a tumor the size of a deck of playing cards from the left frontal lobe of my brain. Yaayyyy modern medical science! I was in and out of the hospital in less than 24 hours with no side effects. MUSC was on point with this one. Radiation therapy wasn't that bad. Chemo was horrible. God is good. I am thankful.

He's right through. Can you imagine Fallon actually having a serious conversation with somebody about something like their faith and making good, compelling television, etc.
No I couldn't
I think Fallon was raised Catholic too so he totally *could* be having this conversation 🤣
Michael Appler you think this was good compelling television?
@@littleflower9536 true but he's not as into it as Colbert is--I saw a doc that Colbert made on it and had no idea before

People running with the bulls are called "mozos", which means "single guys": you're not supposed to run if you've got people who need you alive. So, Jim followed the rules of the bullrun better than many other visitors to Spain :-)
Interesting!
let me please add on to the meaning of mozos=it also means from the lower working class...for example, the waiter at your table in a restaurant is the mozo.
CoraMendi: That makes total sense. Don't do something that dangerous if you have people who depend upon you.
Stephen "you're not doing your show in Spanish.... Who's your audience?"
Jim "people who understand English"
Then that handshake from Stephen 😂😂😂
Nicely done Jim, nicely done

Hmmmm interesting interview. I liked his humility/simplicity when it came to his faith. His "personal relationship with Jesus-which may sound crazy." That was sweet. :)
He's a gifted comedian. A natural. Love him!
Really appreciate how Jim describes his faith. Suspect many also feel the same way. We are imperfect beings worshipping a perfect Creator.
Yeah. Jim Gaffigan's a monster, alright; in much the same way that Elmo and Grover are monsters.
That's called "Catholic guilt" lol
Elmo was a bad choice of example; his performer has been accused of some pretty vile stuff...

Jim is less of a monster and more like one of Maurice Sendak's Wild Things.
reminds me of the kindly parish priest who's non-threatening and therefore approachable.
William Steeves: Thank you for mentioning Maurice Sendak's Wild Things. That was one of my favorite books and my son's too. When we read it for the first time we were both exhausted at the end. Jim as one of Maurice's Wild Things? Yes. I can see that.
You know what I really wish? A show in which they had a serious discussion about all of our issues of concern about the horrors we face today and what their causes of hope might be.
Love him ....so refreshing to hear him speaking the truth.
I do think it’s completely bizarre that we call places by different names but if I attempt using the actual names, people here will accuse me of being pretentious.

But you are speaking a different language... :)
Excellent point...
also the whole world is like: this is football. And Americans are like, nahhh... we like soccer better
They call the United States "Los Estados Unidos"
It’s so true, Stephen is the only talk show host that would bring the conversation to matters of faith, and I love him for it. He is living proof that intellectualism and faith are not mutually exclusive.
He's also a great example of being a humanist - I'm an atheist now & I wish the vocal religious who feature most often in the public eye were more "Colbert" & less anger-fear-&-hate. ♥️♥️
Elektric Skeptic Johaniskraut Bernstein Or'Cheard I would agree but challenge your statement by saying that the majority of faith-based individuals are not motivated by anger, fear, and hate, but the ones who are tend to garner far more attention.
Pay attention to the ones you meet that have faith apart from political and national affiliation. They will probably surprise you in how authentic and sincere they are in the love and compassion they demonstrate. Jesus instructed his disciples to beware the leaven of the Pharisees (empty religious devotion) and of Herod (political gain). Unfortunately so few believers have the understanding and wherewithal to obey.

I'm a guy so I can't speak to Jim being cute but you're absolutely right about Jesus.
God knew He was creating imperfect people, it was entirely intentional. That's why He sent His Son to be our Savior. Why would we need saving if we were already perfect? He loves us, each of us, for all our many imperfections.

I was expecting Jim to have an issue with the prayer hands emoji because it was supposed to be "high five"!
We *do* do that with people. Royalty, in particular. In Norway, all the English Kings Henry are called Henrik.
"🙏" means "please!" from Japanese お願い, _onegai_ Also used as ナマステ, _namaste_
Americans misappropriate it as "prayer hands"
RubelliteFae THANK YOU
Misappropriate 🤔 I think just misunderstood the Japanese context. Americans didn’t take the use of hands together and call it their own unique idea. It just transferred to a different culture context. It’s like the peace sign and thumbs up transfers to other cultures differently.
Imma pray for u 🙏
I honestly always thought it was an high 5
@@MA-zg2pz Ignorant of the original context at all. Using a symbol from another culture after guessing its meaning with little understanding of said culture... is misappropriation. This is why they now come is so many colours and they are all gendered, now. The symbol that meant "apologies for the mess" (a bowing construction worker) became "male construction worker" & "female construction worker." Symbols are supposed to represent the most abstracted, generalized form of an idea. It irks me
I’m praying for you steve
The "prayer hands" emoji was originally meant to represent two hands placed firmly together, meaning "please" or "thank you" in Japanese culture. So, I would interpret "See you at dinner 🙏" as the sender being super grateful that the recipient is coming, not a prayer.
(... Do other people think I'm praying to them when I use it as intended?)
Probably
Hey, Jimmy - I prayed for my devout uncle before a surgery - he asked me to. He knew I was an atheist, and I even said, "Don't you think that might be counter productive?" But he asked, and I did it as sincerely as I could, because I knew it would make him feel better. When an atheist say, "I am praying for you" that means a lot more than when a believer says it. It means that they care so much about you that they will do something they think silly only because it will provide emotional support. If only all my Christian relatives had been that respectful to my atheist step father. He was happy to see them, but they insisted on praying (and tried to get him to join in) and brought in three pastors, and did everything they could think of to ignore his wishes, and jam their beliefs down his throat. But he was a good man, and knew that they thought they were doing good, so he forgave them - though it all pissed him off a lot, and I was the only one he could tell.
I thought the prayer hands emoji meant Namaste (I salute the divinity within you), not I’m praying for you.
I thought it was two people high-fiving. :P
Laurie, I suspect the emoji was designed to be something universal that is meant as a sign of honoring someone's spirituality. We do not all need to agree - the point is, it's good energy.
Sherry Ellesson Yes, you’re right - that is the point. 💕
Colberts interviews with comics is always awkward. Common denominator is Colbert.
1:45 I've often wondered that, as well.
What a great guy.
I used to be a colbert fan while he was totally scripted on the colbert report, but now I find when he has a truly sharp guest, he's not a foil, instead colbert is simply dull, and not purposely.
2:03 People do that constantly! Especially if your name has more than 2 syllables! People will ignore the name you told them and declare "well I'll just call you...". Or the "polite" ones will ask "do you have a nick name I can call you?" My answer to both options is always "No".
And your name is MK.
Mkay.
Erica has a lot of syllables but I've always been called Erica because what do you shorten that down to? Air?
As a matter of fact, I was that kid in school with a name you couldn't shorten so I never had a nickname of any kind and it always bothered me.
So when I had a kid, I gave her a name that she doesn't even realize is her name because I've never called her that, I call her by her nickname and don't even introduce her by her real name.
So I guess weird things have differently weird effects on people.

@@1craley878 we midwesterners do travel extensively contrary to what the east coasters and the west coasters believe about us. I live in San Francisco now for 25 years and stopped explaining it to the Californians. At least we don't need to think we are superior.
The Spanish have different names for all the countries too. They even call the British royal families by different names. It's Prince Carlos and Queen Isabella. My favourite is prince Enrique for prince Harry.
And Guillermo for William, which is so freaking annoying
I think what he's trying to say is that he loves some aspects of religion, like the sense of family, but he doesnt truly believe everything about it.
I'm in the same type of relationship he is but I dont pretend to believe. My thought process is all the good things that you like about your religion can be achieved without the supernatural stuff. You just have to be a better person not for a god, but for you and your fellow humans.
Agreed. If people get that from their church, that's great. But it's not because of the church, it's because of the people that go there. You also don't need a church to find friends, community, and a supportive environment. I have that with my neighbors. And yes, believe it or not, I live in America. How sad is it that people feel they can't get that from their neighbors in America so they need to look for it in church?
Agree as well. Just look at the bible. It's basically a guide book on how to be a good human, a decent member of society. It's a book of stories, allegories, and metaphors trying to teach you lessons on life. People get into trouble when they take these stories as the literal truth as if it actually happened that way with all the magic and such. If people want to waste their time with religion, aka mythology, and pour their hard earned money into the pockets of the clergy, go right ahead. I on the other hand can be a good human on my own. It isn't difficult.
Why?
Good point! Now, what about the afterlife? Where do loved ones go?
@@luismx8 The same place they were before they were born: Nowhere.

Jim G. can do no wrong in my eyes. He’s just that funny. I definitely think there’s an overuse of “prayer hands”. People put those to say they’re praying. Do I actually think all of those people are praying? Not really. When my husband had cancer, he knew people meant well, but we should all get off social media and downgrade emoji usage and go over and offer our help to people in need. If you’re too far away, think of something more inventive. You can pray as well but what people need most is real acts of kindness.
Jim is the best. I subscribe to his UA-cam channel and get to see all of his videos.
I always thought the emoji standard set was created in Japan, and that’s why the prayer-hands emoji comes up when you type “thanks,” rather than for “please” or “hope.”
Yea, in JPN it means thanks, but more often it means please, it can also mean prayer though, but not very common as JPN isn't very religious.
