Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

I was shopping for one of these online and found one on Craigslist for $500. The ad read that it was about 4-5 years old, only used about 15 times, and has been sitting for the last 2 seasons and the guy couldn't get it started. I went to check it out and couldn't get it started, but knew there had to be a way. Even if I did take it to a repair shop, I still saved over $1,000. Luckily, I came across this video, and sure enough, it was a loose wire. I plugged it back in, gave it a tug, and it roared to life. Thank you for this video. Really saved me.
I'm glad I watched your video. I have a shop and occasionally get these in. I actually know about the connector issues and checked them, but had the saw apart a couple times and put it back together only to find I had spark but no fuel. I was afraid I needed a new injector, so of course I go UA-cam looking at what other mechanics have found with them. Initially I thought, "Yep did that." Then I started thinking that I had it apart a couple times, I should check it again. Sure enough, one injector wire pin had pulled out. This video saved me literally hours of frustration. Thanks for the help!
Thank you! Thank You....I have the same black and blue wires loose in the connector. I had to remove the connector then push the wire back into the connector and plug it back in. THANK YOU!
Thank you for the help same saw same issue pushing the ignition wire back in worked for me!
This is what I want from a good UA-cam channel 👏 Thanks for sharing your experience with us all.
Perfect! Stay tuned, I have lots more questions and hopefully @donyboy73 has just as many answers!
That was a great video Don. I liked how you keep Dave in suspense about what the repair fix was. Chainsaws are a pain to work on because everything is so darn close!
Thanks for watching Rob!
Our saw has been sitting for a year maybe, just went over it and Yellow wire was loose, pushed it in hard and believe it or not saw runs like new again! I thought it would be more harder to fix because all the electronics, you guys saved the day!
you're welcome, make sure you're subscribed!
Awesome video I have one like this which I purchase it used and change the air filter cleaned carburetor etc & before doing any of this blow everything out as well as the contactes
Over all it one to learn on & grow on
Thanks guys 👍
This vid will save alot of people alot of money with the advent of injected cutoff saws and chainsaws. This info is pure gold if you own such equipment
Who would have thought a silly little connector was the issue!!!
I just got one of these in my shop for repairs it doesn't seem to have spark thanks for the information I seen spark one time and that was it this may help me
Excellent diagnosis Donny , information from a very experienced person . I like what you said to inform others of the bill . For the hourly rate from the dealers shops . Invaluable information can go a long way for others . Top man , total respect to you . . Keep up the excellent work and content , from Lockdown in GB . . 👍 👊. .
greetings from Canada buddy!
Electrical terminals typically have a locking tab that will secure it in the connector. The connector itself should have a locking devise as well. Assembled correctly, wires should never pull out. Do these connectors have the tab.
Also keep an eye on the injectors in the early models. They tend to leak resulting in a "no idle" situation. Ran through a couple of them
Man I just bought a ms 500i and not even through the second tank I couldnt get it started. I immediately check the plug for flooding/spark. Couldn't belive that it was messing up the same day I bought it and at $1469 I was pissed! And the place I bought it service mechanic quit and every other dealer hadn't even seen one yet! The story gets better! The manager who sold me the saw let me borrow the mds scan tool because after failed attempts helping him download the software we agreed it was his old desktop would t support the software. Long story short I was able to get the diag done and sure enough, control module test failed! After inspection it looked like the female plugs were upside down not getting a proper connection. I adjusted the clips and past the test. Don't forget to recalibrate after doing pretty much anything on the fuel Injected saws. Good video
Thank you so much, I watched just in case I get one in my store. I'm a Stihl Tec at an Ace Hardware store in Tennessee. I would have never thought that those wires would have been the problem. Great Job. I have watched donyboy73 when I have a problem I'm puzzled on and you have a fix for it. Thank you again. Now my boss will think I'm REALLY smart. LOL
I fix a bunch of Stihl stuff, this is very valuable information, thanks donyboy73
You are the Master Doctor! Sure wish this video was done two weeks ago, because I just sent one of our commercial customers to the dealer with the same problem. You guys are great 👍 Thank you thank you thank you
thanks buddy! this is invaluable info!
Yes it is invaluable. I can't wait for the next one to come into the shop
@@RaleysSmallEngines Maybe Don will help me out when I pull it all apart to change the crankshaft bearings... they sound pretty rough in person. What do you say, @donyboy73 ?
Quite the diagnostic! Awesome find with the saw
Another great and informative collaboration video. Thanks.
Thanks Gary!
Hey Dony! I really really liked this video. Unique format. Great communications between the two of you. And, very entertaining banter. Very informative.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Donny boy appreciate u learn some important tips
Awesome! Once again, very valuable information. Thanks Guys. Best regards.
VERY PROFESSIONAL THANK YOU FOR THE IMPUT TAKE CARE,,,,,,
thank you for the education sirs
They call those push-outs. I repaired the electrical systems for the Chrysler minivans here in Windsor Ontario for 20 years. Even brand new they were prone to this. Great find.

Great stuff! Another one for the tool box.
awesome to see two buddies helping each other out like this ,, keep it up 👍
Thanks Michel!
Don! You are the man diagnosing it online!
Great job dony Impressive advice.
Thanks for the help Don!!!
Your welcome! Wait, I'm not Dony, my brain must be not on file lol.
You guys are the best❤️❤️
Great diagnoses Dony boy 👍
Nice job you two, cheers
good video i will see tomorow if it fixes mine. But old mate had a spare 500 on the floor behind him, its revealed around 10.20 :)
Good stuff.Great info.
Thank you!!!
Don/Dave there are two tabs on those pins if you take a small screwdriver or fine pick you can spread those a part and then push it back in so they stay in the connector. Thanks
Hey Jag! I looked for those - I think when it was initially disassembled the person yanked the wires out and broke the clips.
Thanks for sharing knowledge...
My pleasure!
Thanks for watching Rusty!
Outstanding work bruh! I hit like n subscribe!
Hi Donyboy and Dave thanking you both for great and helpful clip. One or two wires can cost you an arm or a leg if you take it to the mower shop.
Absolutely!
The voice of experience speaks.
you're a great teacher man. i learn something every video.
He is great. Super patient too. His explanations always click with me and he never belittles. I think he remembers what it was like when he was just learning too!

Could you please tell me what the compression should be on the ts500i ? What is the correct procedure in doing a compression test on a ts500i ??
Great video guys. 👍
Thanks!
Hi mate hope you and the family are well.. great video as well..
Thanks, you too!
Dave owes you one!
Question........a good or bad module doesn`t show a spark at the grounded plug when removed from the engine and then spun over as one would do when carrying out a typical ignition test........so how are you going to establish if there is spark at the plug?
That’s a nice saw, congratulations Dave! I do like my vintage saws, however, due to the simplicity and lack of emissions control equipment.
I agree. I will take a carb over electronic stuff anytime. However, I have a video on my MS441c that I put a 461 big bore piston and cylinder on. It has the Mtronic carb... and it did all of the adjustments for me. It works GREAT.
@@DavesSmallEngines very nice! I do see the benefit of having the m-tronic carb especially for going up into the mountains.
@@evanchapmanfanman until it fails!!!!
@@DavesSmallEngines exactly, I don’t mind turning a screwdriver to get the proper performance. At least it runs!
@@DavesSmallEngines You could say the same about a carbed saw. Until it fails. Anything can fail. But these injected chainsaws don't fail any more often than a regular carb saw does based on my experience. And because they don't have a rubber membrane, ethanol fuel is a non-issue for them. That's a big plus imo, less maintenance required.
I live in Durham nc I'm a masonry most of my friends are in masonry business and no vary wants the ts500i to much problems ...ts400 are the best and the ts420 the only problem is the mufler bolt 🔩they come off so easily
Good day Guys Boy o boy never dreamt that would start. They say cars from states that flooded always have problems. $200. US boy. Keep the empties they are worth .10/pc. Thanks to both of you. As Christian I would hope they wouldn't put new box on & charge 1 hr. labor. Thanks
Good job goes to both of you I learned a little something there with fuel injection because I have a 500 I chainsaw that’s good information for me thank you
Thats awesome. I think they are similar machines. Do you like it? Pretty cool with no choke, eh?
I do like it the only problem is I’m so short I can only get the motor to roll over twice when I pull the starter so I got to figure out a way of doing that I need at least three revolutions to get it fire because I ran into the same issue with my 361 so I think I’ve got a way to get a couple more inches of pole but I haven’t tried it yet I cut a bar of three eights notch in a 2 x 4 and I’m gonna slip that in the handle instead of putting my foot in there and see if I can gain a little bitMore elevation from the ground so that I can get the saw to roll over three times while I am on the rope don’t have long enough farms don’t have enough distance between my crotch and where my arm ends up so I’m gonna try different things
@@gregritter5883 do they make an easy start version?
@@DavesSmallEngines I don’t think so
Good job u 2
Another nice save, experience counts.
It really does! He knew exactly what the issue was.
Had the exact same problem today
Hi I have the same machine And my problem is when I press the trigger the motor stalls
Very good tip! Some guys would have thrown the saw out, when it was just a loose connection.
Thanks for watching Bill!
The guys that can fix em love those guys that pitch em. Bonus!
That was very interesting. Stihl has some bugs to work out, eh . Thanks guys ! 👍
I don’t think it was Stihl’s fault - it was disassembled when I bought it and the pins were out of the connector.
Great video and advice in this video donyboy. You are the Best wish i lived closer to you. Hope your wife is doing ok buddy. Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. God Bless!!
Thanks for watching!

Honda, yamaha, ariens and so on
Same issue with the one I have... I already pulled it apart.
Nicely done
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks! I'm just glad it worked.
Thanks for sharing I’m old school I will stay with carb but one day carbs will be gone I think at that is soon
Yes it will!
That is the deal with my Holden Commodore which is fitted with the 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine,it has proprietary GM software on its PCM meaning that you either need to manually scan it with GMs Tech 2 scan tool/ programmer for codes for that model of Holden by Holden or myself if it's programmed to scan my model or in my case I scan it as a 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 powered U.S. built 2002 model Chevrolet Camaro on my Bosch OBD2 scan tool because that scan tool doesn't have a listing for an Australian built 2002 model Holden VY Commodore on it.
So I need to manually scan an SAE J1850 VPW GM car with that Bosch unit, the later CAN BUS ISO 15765 cars (2005+ for the Holden Alloytec V6 engine & 2006+ for the 6 litre Chevrolet L76 V8 engine) can be scanned by any cheap OBD2 scanner which can scan generic codes & automatically !

Ok so I have the ts500i it starts and idols fine and it starts and it even throttles up to full throttle but after a few seconds of cutting it just shuts off and then it will fire right back up in one maybe two pulls everytime , but again shuts off like some has hit the kill switch
.it will start and idol every time and it will idol as long as it has gas I don't know what to do everything's clean and seems fine plz help
Great video Dony: I learned something today. Never had one of those in my shop yet. Many thanks.
Glad to help!
I've just had 24 ts380i's delivered, no diagnostics purchased with the saws
This well work on alot different
Electronic
If wires come loose
Even on washer Machince wires can vibrate loose itches bad Crimped
I’ve never seen a fuel injector one. Is the module your talking about a computer command like a vehicle & does it take straight gasoline or mixed oil & gas. That’s interesting!
Mixed gas. It’s a module that controls the spark, air fuel radio etc.
There are little barbs on the pins that lock it in place. They may be flattened, and if so you can pry them back out so that the pin can be snapped and locked into the connector.
I tried that Chad - I think it was broken off before I bought it (likely when it was removed)
You have to pump the primer about 5 times
Enjoy that case of Beer Don😀
Can I keep the kill switch off
have a link to daves channel. the injectors for those saws run off 2.5 psi

Don, I’d love to send y9u an echo blower that I cannot figure out for the life of me…I feel like somehow the crank spun and it’s out of time some how…long story but I’ve tried everything & while I hate to replace parts for no reason I was forced on this one. My customer was very understanding but dang if I can’t figure it out….kroil works great for cleaning up bearings (in my experience)
Might be an echo recall they send you a new flywheel taryl knows all did a video of it
I am telling you check the wires under the flywheel to thay are close
Super!
Thanks for watching!
The connectors attached to the wires should have opposing prongs that lock the connector into the plastic plug. The plastic plugs could be the issue but not my first guess. The prongs can usually be bent outward gently enough to regain the locking action. That's either a bad batch of connectors or the crimping tool was adjusted improperly. Poor QC by Stihl.
I think whoever I bought it off of yanked the cable out instead of properly removing it.
@@DavesSmallEngines could be lol
Would it be a good idea to pinch the connector on The Wire so it would have a more firm fit if you could answer would be great all the way from Ireland
greetings from Canada!
I'm not sure if thats a good idea - I think the tab on the female metal connection locks into the plastic connector, not the female metal connector onto the male metal side.
@@DavesSmallEngines Hi Dave. I have experienced the same problem with automotive connectors. They always have a tab on the metal part that you pulled out to secure them into the plastic connector. Slightly bending the tab out will result in a good connection. See Stuck Innj's comment.
