A lot of metal purists don’t like Ghost, they get the “pop metal” label, but they’re so fun (in my opinion). They’re like the Scooby Doo version of a satanic metal band and i for one dig that immensely. Like, I enjoy super heavy metal too, but sometimes melodies and a good bop are what ya need.
I saw Ghost live last month, and the show was AMAZING. This song was one of the best. Year Zero was also great.
Ghost has a lot of backstory and lore about them. There are a lot of non-music videos that set this up, but just to scratch the surface.. The whole Satanic thing is satire. Per the lore, Ghost is like the public outreach program of a Satanic church, their concerts are called "rituals." The frontman you're seeing in this is Papa Emeritus III, there were two previous Papas on earlier albums, the current is Cardinal Copia (all the same person, Tobias Forge). This song was actually the debut of Papa Emeritus III.
"Mary on a Cross" is great, the live in Tampa version especially. I'd love to see you check out "Rats" though, it's one of my favorites.Or maybe "Dance Macabre" if you want to see the origin of Papa Nihil (perhaps the father of the Emeritus' line?)
Oh wow
@MaddyReactions I highly second the recommendation of Dance Macabre, it was the song that hooked me!
And a square hammer, IIRC, was one of the instruments that the Inquisition used to break the limbs of accused witches, but I could be wrong.
The chorus definitely plays off of Freemasonry (Tobias Forge was a Mason himself for a while) and the song itself can be viewed perhaps as playing off of the conspiracies around the Freemasons being a cover for debauched devil worship and unholy rites. This song first released during the transition between the second album and the third, which marked a transition in the character thr singer plays as well from a much darker, scary sort of character to a more fun, tongue in cheek one, so this song really captures the "spooky goofy Satanic Scooby Doo" vibe of that era of their album cycle. Year Zero would be a good one to listen to if you wanted to hear the darker lyrics and style of Papa II.
Ahh
Is it confirmed he was a mason? He was accused of being one in court because of a pay dispute with the judge who ruled on his behalf accused of also being one, and that being the reason why he won. Others have said that he only found out being freemasonry while visiting the US and found its beliefs/ceremonies hilarious.
Actually, it was the transition between the third and fourth album, Meliora and Prequelle. But otherwise I agree with you. 🙂
One of my favorite live performances of "Square Hammer" is the San Bernardino video from 7/1/17. Ben Christo was the lead guitarist on this tour (had only a brief stint with the band) and is so awesome with regard to his energy, showmanship and interactions with the crowd. The energy of the band overall is outstanding in this live version.
Oooh
Tobias Forge (Ghost mastermind) has a character - Papa Emeritus -which is kind of an anti-pope. Ghost are excellent songwriters. They wrote this song at the end of recording their third album (the one that has Cirice on it), but left it off the album he and released it as part of an EP "Popestar". Ghost has fun with religion/cults - but its not serious - like a horror movie, or Scooby Doo.
Oh wow
I wish I'd gotten a notification when you did this reaction. This is the HIT that broke them out, i think, saw them at VOODOO FEST, opening for TOOL, i knew nothing about them, but they impressed me
Oh wow!!
He sings like This whilst wearing a full head Mask.
Fantastic !!
My wife and I are very much into Ghost. You should react to Dance Macabre its her favorite song and our aniversary is coming up on the 14th. They have a lot of good songs if you really want to go down the rabbit hole. Call me little sunshine, Hunters moon, and From the pinnacle to the pit are my favs. I just subscribed today, have you reacted to Slipknot yet?
Lovely
My wife and I went to see Ghost for our 10 year anniversary. A month ago. EPIC!
Right on! Great reaction 💚🍀
You should definitely react to their song “Mary on a Cross” next🤘🏼
Mary on a Cross is one of the worst Ghost songs
Nice
Con Clavi Con Dio is so much better.
Hi Maddy....I'm Otto. I like your channel so far. You have a warm personality...Not a bad taste in music either...Square hammer is an older, but groovy song I find...I'm From Southeast U.S. to answer your question. You? Also keep the uploads coming please! Ever listen to AFI? the nephilim is a great song... 🎸 on...
I like Ghost since they/Tobias make you rethink many concepts especially religion. Believe whatever you want but know why you follow anyone or anything. Don't fall into the trap of following any dogma blindly simply because you were told to. The road to discovery is based on asking why?
Niceee
As you said Ghost is totally cultist. And the song is about a ritual. And we all are invited. :)
I think i saw a video of a priest dude mentioning a square hammer. Cant remember what verse he quoted, didnt think i'd have to cite verse.
If you like Ghost and spooky music, try some with an even more legendary band: Black Sabbath, the originators of heavy metal and a huge influence on all heavy music that came after. Try Symptom of the Universe, original studio audio, from the classic album Sabotage. They are very listenable because of their extreme musical talent and their revolutionary production and tuning, they sounded like no one else when they came out. Once you listen to them, like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, you want to hear more, another deep rabbit hole of some of the best music ever. Listen to them when you can, please, I can't wait to see your face when you hear prime Ozzy Osbourne and the great band of hall of famers backing him up, every one in that band is always in the conversation for best at their instruments. They were great then and still are judging from the amazed reactors who have sampled their awesome catalog. You will not be dissappointed! Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Oooh
You should try reacting to some of their live shows. Mary on a cross is a great one to start with.
Oooh
references to Freemasonry...draws on silent horror films like Nosferatu...
The song has a lot of free masonry references. Search Léo Taxil or the Taxil hoax from the 1890’s. Might help with some of the references.
Oooh
The short and sweet is that the song is about the freemasons.
It is about intiation ; literally has Freemason wording in it.. [I am 32 dgree -- I jame to this before going into lodge !!
6:12 the red cardinal signaled the imminent death of this Papa and the rise of the current papa that leads the band.
You should listen to Spillways by Ghost.
Great, now I have to look up Belladonna of Sadness.
If you aren't done digging into Ghost, you might consider "He Is" next (7hMaHDTw-pI), another catchy tune imbued with pop satanism and suitably provocative visuals.
Speaking of churchiness, they also made a version of Genesis' "Jesus he knows me" (BE3kJeBr9QI), and they didn't use a single skull-face makeup in the entire video.
The musical treatment is rather faithful to the original, while the music video is perhaps less playful, albeit still completely over the top.
Hehe🩷
Belladona of Sadness, such a good anime
🩷
I think he’s referring to the masons
Makes sense lol
Yes! Props for getting the Illuminati thing. But Tobias is like Illuminati is bullshit, Satan is bullshit, and he takes advantage and people who don't think these things are bullshit get freaked out. Brilliant marketing, honestly.
Try" Deathstar"s, choose any video, but they released a new album this spring.
Or "Avatar", maybe the funny "The eagle has landed".
Ooh
I'll second Avatar and "The Eagle Has Landed".
Ghost is the new Marilyn Manson. Watch the interview with Tobias Forge. Hes the singer and writer its fun
Definitely
the square and the level is the masonic symbol....masons hammers
Ahh
Please react to Dance Macabre ❤
the Anti-Pope
I'd like to see an Avatar reaction, if you haven't yet
I second this Avatar is amazing
Its weird i have like 4 swedish bands in my top 10, Ghost, Avatar, Sabaton and NFO
Yes to your freemasonry question. IMHO, this is making fun of freemasonry, which, with its exclusive membership and passwords to get in and such, was suspected of being satanic. But what are you being asked to "swear before the devil"? That "you're on the square" (you can build square buildings) and "you're on the level" (the floors in your buildings don't slope). Pretty tame for satanism.
i mean they are satanists soooo i guess that comes with being culty xD
Oh 🫨
They certainly revel in satanic panic imagery, but they feel rather distant from any actual satanism.
I think they're just having fun with Christian-adjacent concepts.
I prefer Tobias' previous band REPUGNANT, excellent Swedish death metal. I saw GHOST open for IRON MAIDEN and they bored the ticks off me.
Nice
Never heard of them. I see they're a Swedish "Metal" band. I would have expected much darker. This sounds more like Pop Metal to me. Maybe this is as dark as they're allowed to get in Sweden nowadays.
Biggest band of the past decade!
Ahh
“Allowed” lol
Tobias is a Mason, so yes, you got the square reference, missed the Level one though ;)
Ahhh
Forget " Mary on a Cross" it's honestly not very good. Try "Rats" or "Cirice" or "Dance Macabre"
Have done Ciricie ❤️
@@MaddyReactions I've seen it! Try the others! Dance Macabre is something special lol. Rats is just catchy as hell.
