Foam board makes the best mold boxes.
It's all o use. One trick I use is to coat one side of the board with clear acrylic gloss sealer. This is the side of the mold that comes in contact with the rubber. After applying the acrylic gloss, let dry completely. A blow dryer helps. Apply a fine coat of mold release spray. Do this just before you pour your rubber.

Very cool!! I never stressed about making a mold box. :) My son did when I asked to use some of his Lego pieces to make a mold box many years ago now. He was so worried he would not get them back. Of course he did. :D I did not tape them up though inside and really had almost no leakage of the silicone. I use anything for making a mold box... or even as a mold. Once I cut a tennis ball in half to use as a resin mold. :P It worked and I still have the tennis ball halves. - Heidi

My first time I used plaxiglass to make the mold with, I just cut it to the size I needed and rolled it into a circle and tapped it together, unmolding was easy since plexiglass doesn't like to be bent, it just snaps itself back flat when tap is cut demolding the silicon.

One tip is that when you've used up a mold, cut it into pieces and include it in your mixture of new silicone. You'll use a lot less of the new stuff while recycling the old stuff! Also measuring properly and using the right-sized mold box will help cut down on excess waste.

I'm shocked , you don't put a bottom ? something to stick your blank to? I just started making and am going to start selling molds. I know I am a little late in the game, lol. The bottom to me is what ruins my molds, I have tried book binding tape which has wrinkled on me and left wrinkles on the mold....the piece from the mold would not be effected, but of course it's not sellable. Then I tried transfer tape and it worked good for one of the molds, but the other it had wrinkles. So how do you get a way with no bottom? TYIA .

I need the silicone to be able to capture all the detail of the baitfish scales , gills and fins etc. What silicone from alumilite would work the best? i want to take that master and make more molds of it so i can pour plastisol to create my own paddle tail style soft plastic lures. Thanks 😀
