- Crisp color air-to-air film captures C-124 Globemasters of the 62nd Troop Carrier Group dropping supplies and equipment over the Olympic Mountains in Washington during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) in 1957. Worked on C-124s at Hickam AFB in 65-67 and Hill AFB in 68. Such an easy plane to work on. Spent a lot of time inside the wings routing cables.

Two C-124s flying in formation--a rare sight indeed. I missed my chance to be a passenger on a C-124 on any of five trips I made from Bitburg to Wheelus between 1961 and 1964. The air liaison for USAFE sometimes scheduled Old Shakey for the trip, but as it turned out I always drew C-130s. Just as well, I guess.
My father-n-law received an Air Medal for saving a flight en route from Greenland to Nova Scotia on one of these. He was riding as a passenger along with a couple of hundred other airmen when the call came over the pa for a radio tech. He went to the cockpit and the aircraft commander told him they were lost and that the radios were dead. He did his standard checks but couldn’t find a thing. Then he saw that the new’be working the radios had accidentally switched off his gear and for some reason was so nervous he didn’t notice it. Chuck very slyly turned everything back on and about the same time the entire crew heard voices over the radio. They all cheered knowing they would live as the water temps below had a life expectancy of about five minutes. He was such. A modest guy that I’ve known for decades and I have to believe him when he said he didn’t have the heart to tell anyone what had actually happened. But, knowing the service what little I do or maybe I should say Uncle Sam, he definitely deserved it! God Bless you Chuck!

Don't forget to add 2 extra spark plugs for the two APU engines. Make that 450 total spark plugs if I'm not mistaken! When you had to do a spark plug change, it was quite a job, especially in winter.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I came to appreciate the mighty C-124 when I worked with a bunch of former C-124 airlift crews at McChord AFB in the C-141 era... their stories were great.
I’ve spent hours in the one that was over Yoido’s runway, in Seoul, in the Eighties.
That aircraft looked so weird, it must have been an adventure to fly them.
That was a nice airplane and I loved riding on them when going from our satellite base back to our main base. I also liked the C-97's which was even nicer and fairly powerful for a prop airplane.

Yes! I got to know a bunch of C-124-era aircrews around McChord AFB in the '80s, long after the 124s were replaced by C-141s. I gained a healthy respect for the airlift crews and the mission. Thanks for watching.

Knew him when I was at McChord in the 80s, involved with the museum; lost touch when I departed there early 90s.

My uncle flew in one of these planes in Korean War..... Plane went down killing him and the rest of the 128 US soldiers on board. They had just taken off and the plane experienced mechanical problems.... Crashing near Tokyo. God bless our military!

A lot of those crashed.
18 by my count but some due to pilot error apparently.
