  • So I had a mixer PCB to repair. The fault was described as noisy (crackly) potentiometers. But is that really the problem here and how to prove or disprove it? Watch on and fine out.

Hi Richard great video as always - I replace faders in mixing desk all the time usually they are dirty from either beer or other spillage! I disassemble the faders by bending the metal tabs out allowing you to access the brass slider contacts and the carbon tracks - use solvent cleaner to clean the tracks and remove any other dirt or fluff from inside then use a cotton bud with switch cleaner to clean the tracks themselves - and usually does the trick - occasionally the carbon tracks get damaged from someone dropping something on the desk etc then the faders are scrap

Rather than just listening to music, you can test them with an analog Ohm meter. If the needle doesnt move smoothly you have dirt or dead spots. It's much more accurate. Plus, you can generally measure them in circuit too.

Sods law pops up a lot, if anything can go wrong, it will. The PCB is made of the thinest possible copper. The repair looks good.

Hi Rich, CAIG DeoxIT Fader lube F5 or F100 is the good stuff for cleaning these controls. Do not use the Red DeoxIT D5 or D Series lube cleaner as that can attack the carbon tracks.

Would it perhaps make sense to provide additional mechanical support for the pots, e.g. by using some hot glue? I'm asking because I'm wondering what caused them to mess around with the PCB in the first place. And the only answer I can come up with is that a pretentious DJ yanked the sliders too hard and caused some initial damage. Which then got disimproved upon by their repair attempts. Now that half the vias are gone, and they're probably going to keep abusing the device, perhaps the sliders should be more... fortified?

That [M] logo on the faders is for Matsushita, so National and Panasonic.

All good, so long as the customer understands there is no guarantee it will function correctly, given you don't have the whole unit to install that board and test it properly.
Chances are 'the other guy' who butchered it prior is the customer attempting in-house repairs.

yeah happens every day here.Fail diy attempt by the owner or some friend, nephew ,son, cousin etc who thinks he solved electronics repair after watching an edited youtube video.Blame another technician like i care if he tried diy and failed.I tell them that its ok to tell me ,im not gonna slap their wrist for breaking something even further, its their property, they can do whatever they like with it.However many believe that you are going to charge extra if they admit DIY.I dont really care since i always charge for the repair attempt even if its a no fix,no matter if the thing died on its own, liquid damage, fail DIY etc.

A better way to test for a noisy pot is to feed a tone into it. A short break in the signal would be more obvious.

Wouldn't it be safer to use an oscilloscope to measure the continuity of the faders throughout their trajectory? Because the multimeter will only be able to measure continuity at specific points.

that person should never touch a solder iron ever again .. plus it is a cheap soundcraft mixer .. you probably charge more for the repair then what that thing is worth some people should never ever open things up as they do not have the IQ to do it... and yes got to start somewhere but that botch job did he do it with a 1000w welder or something jeeezzz
