Apologizes for the incorrect example of the Double Clutch UPSHIFT! No gas in neutral needed to perform one of these. Just let the car rev down in neutral before selecting the next gear! Thanks for watching everyone! P.S. Go to 4:20 for a step by step on Double Clutching.
Wastegate Media hey I'm just wanting to pointing out that double clutching is completely pointless unless you have a car from early to mid 1900s with a manual transmission. You would double clutch because the transmission in netruak took so long to shift the double clutch technique would spin the transmission to cause less wear on the components. With vehicles past 1980 have newer transmission styles which cause less wear in normal shifting... I am a certified automotive engineer by trade and nothing you have stated in this video is correct
4:20
KRC is wrong. Double clutch up shift is a waste of time so long as you engage the next gear before the shaft slows down. On a downshift it is beneficial as its saving wear on the syncro cones.
Ummm? You do realize that with care, after successfully engaging first gear, you can shift through all the gears without ever using the clutch? It just takes a little bit of finesse. Synchros do help considerably.
Wastegate Media granny shifting, not double clutching like ya should

Dude you rock... I only watched this to confirm my understanding but you put into perspective rev hang and its a notorious PITA on my Audi ... V6 supercharged with a long and annoying hang from 1 -> 2 if the wheel is turned while you shift (probably to accommodate multitasking for beginners) plus its dual mass flywheel too which doesnt help but also explains everything. The only known solution I could find til today was a braided clutch line to bypass the valve responsible for the revs hanging so long but its not fun gaining access to labor wise lol. Wow, now I can actually turn normally instead of looking like I don't know how roads work in the middle of an intersection .. Used to cringe in scenarios where I had no option but to release the clutch way too high in revs lol . Thanks brotha and gotta say respect on the translation from complex systems to an understandable 'all ya gotta know' basis haha , liked and subbed for sure only 5 yrs later

The dude making the video can’t drive ether lmao double clutching Isn’t a real thing
If you down shift and your car shakes after down shifting that means the rpms spiked because you didn’t give enough gas when rev matching.
An easier way to double without the extra steps is to use the downrev of letting off the gas, you can auto synchro out of your gear, then your can skip straight to step 3 which is rev matching your desired gear and only push the clutch once. Smoother, same benefits and all you have to do is give it a bit of gas to up your rev's to open the synchro before pulling out of gear, and moving into the downshift portion. Works equally as well in upshifting, especially a high rev 1st to 3rd shift typically seen. Hope this helps, used this method for over a decade.
That trick at 4:27 we use it here in Greece in motorcycles mainly, it'a an old trick from the 80's era, here we call it as ''dry rev-up''.
I used to drive big rig trucks. The only time I used the clutch was for getting the truck moving. I would then float through the gears. For downshifting, then I would double clutch the transmission. Eaton Fuller ten speed transmissions are known for ease in floating the gears. I have a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pick up truck with about 87.000 miles. I take extremally good care good of it to the point where I never let the engine get dust on it. When the truck was newer, I would double clutch all the time for down shifting, but now I try not to do it too often because I don't want my throw-out bearing to wear prematurely. Very good and informative video dude!
For those who drive professionally, skipping gears is called double down or up and it's not technically good for cars, neither is floating your gears. These things are OK for big rigs as our trucks are designed for this because of weight and the speeds we go.
Skipping gears is fine as long as you don't floor it after shifting and allow the revs to drop mid shift. I don't understand the misconception that skipping gears is bad. In my car I skip 4th gear all the time because the gearing ratio is very close to 5th, rendering 4th nearly useless unless I drive up a hill
Skipping gears is fine as long as the blips you made match the road speed. Ive been double clutching for nearly 9 years on an old 2nd hand car and it still runs like when I first bought it
skipping gear is no problem if we can control the rev match
I just watched a video and the guy said skipping gears can be harmful so I'm gonna pass on double clutching lol I prefer a healthy vehicle. I also prefer rev match downshifting as it's more fun.
Is it OK for f150 or ram 1500?
Now I know you need to double clutch to to down skip gears while rev matching. Thanks. I know how to rev match but going to be weird skip rev matching while in neutral.
When you have more mass that is turning there is more inertia which causes you to need more energy to change the speed of rotation. You can see this as a very small and a very heavy car which drive at the same speed and then brake, the small car will stop earlier. So pressing the clutch will cause less mass turning so less revhang
Really good guide. But i don't understand, what's the difference between normal rev match downshift, and double clutch rev match downshift. For me normal rev match downshift is faster?
good video. This is a must if you are driving a car with bad synchros and quick response.
You know what really helps you keep power when downshifting just fucking rev match and you will literally imeadiately hook up
I've been double clutching this entire time, and I didn't know it (didn't even know what it was tbh)
It's a bad way to shift
@@ROCKNROLLMODS bad ?
In Italy on old Fiats 500 we do this everytime because the gears are not syncronized...but you don't Need to take off the foot from the cluch (because it's the same) Just rev ups with the accelerator
Visto che siamo entrambi italiani, la cosa vale anche in scalata? Quindi basta dare un colpo di gas per salire di marcia e per scalare basta un semplice punta tacco?

Dear!
I want to ask 2 questions,
What are benefits of double clutch and secondly, in process of heel toe,,at which time race pedal is to blip ,means that after downshifting or before downshifting, and tell me can its work on frontwheel driving car or only on rear wheel driving cars.
Thanks.
That road looks really cool
Definatly going to try this out.
Only knew about Rev Matching thanks.
The reason for rev hang is to make sure unspent fuel is combusted before exiting through the exhaust for, you correctly said, emissions reasons.
Wait. I’m supposed to be double clutching to go down to fourth instead of pushing the clutch in and going straight down?
How come that it is only in USA that you do this old double clutching? We left this method in the late 1940s when the synchronized gearbox became very common. That thing that you are doing is not the double clutch that you had to do in a not synchronized gearbox. First you step on the clutch pedal then you move the stick to neutral, lift the foot from the pedal, give a little gas, clutch again and move the stick to the next gear. That you had to do to get everything synchronized so you could gear up or down. Then someone invented the synchronized gearbox and it all became very smooth, fast and easy.
So why all this rubbish about double clutch???
Very best synchronized regards from a man in his best age in Europe .
If your synchros are worn and you want to put off rebuilding your tranny, you'll want to double clutch.
no body actually does it anymore unless its needed for some reason
@@dmtracing56 i just do it for fun but usually in old cars ☠
nossnojs I wondered this too. I’m sure there’s small reasons like stated above. I’m an old car/truck person and I didn’t realize people still do this in modern cars. I don’t think any are made they actually require a double clutch unlike the old Model A’s and all vehicles up until the 50s or so.
My saab has weak second gear synchros and I don’t wanna rebuilt the tranny
Double clutching just gonna kill the throw out bearing faster.

Niggasextime
Pfft I've been double clutching for 8 years, and no problem with the clutch so far. My dad has a habit of holdin the gear shifter, destroyed his gearbox in 3 years.
How? The clutch is spinning the whole time it is in gear.
@@sleepwalker29 the throw out bearing still has to push on the pressure plate, and can wear out more, along with the pressure plate springs.
@@edms3656 But the thing is, in normal driving you still always have to push out the throw-out bearing when changing gears so it's designed to take quite a lot of wear.
Trust me, I've driven the same used car for 9 years double clutching and there are no problems as long as you get the timing right and don't force the gear before the clutching in
Why put it in neutral when you can just hold the cluch down and rev before shifting ?
For feeling like a cool driver I guess.
He explained it, it has the same effect, apparently putting it in neutral and raving instead of clutching and reving is a bit easier on a car
well have you tried to shift back into first gear while moving? It's difficult and everything just tells you that the transmission doesn't want you to do this. But if you use the double clutch method you can actually shift back into first really smoothly. I do it sometimes when I have a yield sign at an intersection, makes it easier to look around and then move into the intersection faster as opposed to slipping the clutch in second gear.
Does this only apply to racing cars??
I've always "normal" shifted in my normal car. I skip gears upshifting and downshifting.
So from what I understand you double clutch to avoid jerking from not enough rpm??
UnTypical Guy and also to be easier on your synchros
Double clutching is pointless unless you own a car from early to mid 1900s with a manual transmission
Emory Jenkins double clutching is not better for syncros, it has same effect on syncros as downshifting
Emory Jenkins the only time u should double clutch is for transmissions without syncros, wich it cant be better for them.. cuz there is none..
Are there problems in not doing this right beyond maybe a burnt out clutch?

I used to be a truck driver. We normally don't use clutch apart from 1st (or 2nd or maybe even 3rd if we're light) to get off a full stop. But I noticed you don't really need the clutch to pop it out of gear to neutral. A simple tap to the accelerator and it pops out of gear (into neutral). I tried it with my 03 civic and it worked. Then I tried it with my brother's 2016 civic si and it worked. Hearing from other truckers, it's actually pretty common among them but not small car drivers for some reason.
I now do it habitually in my car. So say if i'm in 2nd gear, did the little accelerator tap to pop it in neutral and then use a single clutch to pop it in 3rd, does this still achieve the same results a double clutching?
As a learning truckdriver, didn't know that, maybe I should try...
YEESSS, Ive been doing this for over a decade. Less steps, same benefits, and you get less wear and tear as well.
Im now a truck driver again and still don’t use clutch.

I have been driving stick shift vehicles for nearly 20 years and I have to tell you this is really unnecessary the only thing your getting out of this is a really strong left calve if you know the gear box your syncros will just be doing their job pressing the clutch twice on every shift will just wear other parts out so I disagree with this !
Me to,we don't need to do this

So can you double clutch with a flappy paddle manual transmission? It doesn't seem so, but I could be wrong. I've tried looking for the answer to this question all over the internet and have found nothing.
Modern cars have synchronized transmissions, so there is no need to double clutch. An example of needing to double clutch is if you’re driving a tractor trailer. The transmissions are not synchronized, so you SHOULD double clutch any time you shift. Or you could just float gears, but rev matching is a must on downshifts. Also, it’s not any easier on your transmission to double clutch if you’re driving a synchronized transmission, in fact, pushing the clutch in more than necessary is just causing wear and tear on it.
Thanks for teaching me how to drive my grandpa's Morgan.
ive just been clutchless shifting instead, i cant figure out all this fancy footwork like heal toe or double clutching, i also cant figure out how to hit the throttle while braking my throttle pedal is too far away from my brake pedal, i also dont understand what the point of all this is when you can just leave out the middle man (the clutch) and just clutchless shift
Great instruction, very informal.
Have not tried it I just push clutch in choose gear and left off clutch. Another note that anime is one of my favs are there any new ones? I honestly lost track
So is it more of a timing thing when you have a synchro gearbox?

You can pull the car out of gear to neutral without the clutch, so neutral, rev match, clutch, gear select?

Double clutching is best when your syncros are worn or a trans with no syncros (older vehicles). If you don't have syncros, it will grind the gears. So double clutching is a must.
LMAO Totally agree
That's what I thought it was for. I've driven older trucks (90') that was a struggle to get in gear if you didn't double shift.
I feel like my feet are too big to do any of this since I'm a size 15 , but I did do a nice rev match downshift earlier today.. too bad is not as easy as it is on a bike.
What cover pedals are those???!!!?!! Please answer. Are they the sparco ones from Amazon?

Double clutching is a waste in cars with synchronized transmissions. Double clutching is only needed in non-synchro transmissions like in big rigs. And even double clutching in non-synchronized transmissions is needed when the driver can float the gears.
What if you over rev like you said if in 3rd gear is usually at 4k rpm you said go up to 45k before putting it back in gear... what if you reved higher like to 5k ? Is that bad to do reving to high ?
Marcus Figueroa it wold just buck a bit
What do you do after you, got from 5th to 3rd, what gear do you go to after that?
Jacob Garza if you’re downshifting from 5th to 3rd then you’ll basically be upshifting to 4th next. You can also double clutch downshift from 5th to 2nd also if that’s what you’re asking

Why did double clutching in a 87 Nissan 200sx burn the clutch up?
I'm trying to learn it. My poor gear box. I've messed it up a few times.
Sooo ... why can’t I simply rev up as needed during the first time I press the clutch... seems to have the same effect without the need to release the clutch twice...
nougatbitz you can do that, it’s just a regular rev match. Double clutching is not necessary with synchromesh gearboxes but it does help in the smoothness of the downshift. Like we said in our description, this video was not made to say that double clutching is better than rev matching, it was made to show people how to do it. That’s it.
2:35 I wish my van could allow such throttle response haha
the engine on The Van has a "heavy flywheel" and it has a bit of throttle lag as well
so I have to wait a bit longer to go to that higher rpm..
imma need a animation to show why this is done and what is happening. thought neutral was neutral so why double clutch instead of rev match..... for upshifts, double vs regular upshifts.... .....i'm slow right now, can't imagine it in my head, need to see it
When you double clutch should you give a lil bit throttle
I know this is might be dumb, but can I push the clutch in, rev, and then put it from 6 to 3?
Yah. Probably not the greatest idea though
Does it work on a 1200 rpm.?
Thanxxx 4 this. I tried it.
Not that easy as it looks.
Just watched a Renault K Range truck review and they talked about synchronized system, they didn't use synchronized system though but they use a double-clutching system to improve durability, and i'm curious about what the heck a double-clutching is? And then i do some research. But well, the double-clutching on the Renault Truck controlled by a system. And because it's automatic (I mean it still uses manual gearbox but controlled by an automatic system) no need to do that anymore.
Quick questions... When can I resume pressing the gas pedal on a double clutch? Should I pass the friction point with the clutch foot, then apply gas? Or should apply gas as I'm crossing the friction point?
You blip the gas while in neutral. Once the revs jump up, you clutch in all the way, put it in gear, and then be off the clutch just how you would while doing a normal upshift
Barely got a manuel and I cant take off fast can someone help.
