Ollie, I have no idea what your educational background is, but as a mechanical engineer, I can say you seem to have a solid understanding of how to design (or improve the designs of others) for managing structural loads and stresses correctly. Everything from tapered/angled weldments to avoid stress risers to boxing in torsional loads to managing moment arms tells me you have a natural engineering mind. It would not surprise me to one day learn you have an engineering degree but realized you enjoy working with your hands more than sitting in a cubicle. Too many of us engineers learn that lesson too late!

Well done. I was one of the people who was really concerned/critical re remaining strength of the frame given the amount of rust. However, you have repaired it to better than new strength - your thought processes are very good. Another issue however - true tramming axles. Will explain. I have been caught in the past with dual axles, in particular, not both running perpendicular to the centerline of the trailer. The critical measurement is that the distance from the spring centre bolt (which initially locates the axle) to the towing point is within a millimeter or two of being equal side to side. I have been caught, getting equal distances from the towing point eye to the fixed front spring centre eye, but then found that the spring eye to spring centre bolt varied slightly from spring pack to spring pack, sometimes by 5 - 8 mm. In many cases spring eyes are manually formed/rolled after the spring end is heated in a forge and that's where the variation can occur. With your spring packs temporarily fitted into the front spring eyes, suggest you compare these lengths side to side. When lengths are equal there is more stability when towing especially when a correctly loaded trailer has to swerve behind the towing vehicle. If this is a farm trailer then speed may never be a factor, although farmers can do the unpredictable. Also equal lengths means axles are not fighting each other and tyres are not scrubbing.

You put a significant amount of thought effort and expertise into this rescue of a piece that I as others believed best go to the scrap yard. Very impressive I hope the owner realizes he has been saved the cost of a replacement and is not one of those who complain about the cost . I think your pressing in the side plate is exactly what was needed , I was concerned those i bean edges had been compromised by the rust thinned and inter crystalline micro cracking had started by going back just a bit then putting a hot pass of weld on you have avoided the issue.

if you want to treat the rust inside the sealed sections, when finished - just put a 10mm hole here and there, and use a garden pressure sprayer to spray a good dose of range oil (usually a mix of diesel and old engine oil or similar) inside, then weld up the holes.

Amazing work on that trailer. In hopes this helps someone who doesn’t know this: Around the 43 minute mark, when drawing the caps in F360, a very quick way would've been:
    1. create new sketch on top of that surface
    2. project the lines of the underlying geometry onto the new sketch
    3. offset the shape/lines it creates by whatever margins you'd want to have for welding

I share your sentiment but, as someone in essentially the same business as Oliver, I see the other side of the issue. I have found myself in this same situation more than a few times. You want to bring this old trailer back to life but can you do it at a profit? What typically happens is, you think you can but the deeper you get into the project, the more damage you find. What usually happens is, the next thing you know, you’re spending the cost of a new trailer just to make the old one safe and dependable again. You either end up working for free or pissing off a customer and usually, both. At the end of the day, Oliver (or anyone else) has to not only cover his costs, he has to make a living and a profit in order to grow his business. It’s a hard call.

@38:05 re: painting. You can mix some diesel fuel with linseed oil and spray down the metal before you weld it back up. The diesel vapors as well as the lindseed oil drying (oxidizing) will keep the metal from rusting. And it's relatively cheap. Alternatively after you have it all welded you could drill a small hole in each end and flush with your welding gas and just weld up the holes to trap it in. Welding up a box section does trap in whatever moisture is in the air so inevitability some rust will occur although once all the oxygen gets used up it should stop.

Love the way you think through problems, not just replace like for like. The opportunity to be your apprentice would be awesome, but at 56 I'm probably a bit too old 😂😂😂😂

Hi Oliver. Very nice welding. Looks good and strong. What is square, straight and true??? Remember Pythagoras is your friend!
When you cut on the plasma table, why not share cut edges rather than cut twice? Is there a technical reason?
Have a great week. Be Well

Another great episode. Alignment was always gonna be tough on an older trailer that's had a hard life, but you're well on the way to making another silk purse out of a sows ear.... Looking forward to seeing episode 3

As I said before, you made a silk purse out of a sows ear, great job, I hope the owner realises the work you put in in making it probably better than it was originally.
Re the LED lights dimming over time, I had a similar problem with mine so I got some new ones to put up as I took the old ones down(they are high like yours), when I came to fit them I realised it was mostly dust build-up on the old ones, I don't create 10% the dust you do from welding smoke and grinding etc. but I was very surprised at the mount of dust, seams they act like magnets for the dust. They have lost some brightness but nothing like what I thought, its worth a try before you order some new ones.

Although I was in engineering, I wouldn't dare comment on your mechanical experience but...................
Please, when you're finished, wash it and Paint it. You'd be adding 'Quality' to a brilliant job.

Just a suggestion: When cutting out a part that you plan on bending, if you add in a notch at the points where you need it bent, it will give you lineup marks for the brake.

Oliver, I wish we had plasma cutting around when I was a boy, they do such a great job, figment is so accurate, repair is so much stronger and the job is presented so professionally to the customer, they can see value for there $$$ which is important. You’ve knocked this job out of the park, really awesome job, a lot of pride in everything you do.

Hey Ollie, I wouldn't put strip lights up again, I would put in high bay led lights. The light difference is huge.

Think you mean “low bay” high bays are for much taller buildings. Some fantastic 100 or 150 w lamps available now

Ollie, you do great work. I hope that your customers realise how much goes into rebuilding their machines. Charge them plenty as I know how spendthrift Yorkshire men can be!

If you have a laser level (or a mate with one) you could throw some lasers down the middle from tow bar to rear and measure like that maybe? Could be easier :) great work as always😊
