  • In this Budget Nerd video, we will talk about accessing your computer from the internet, or anywhere. There are several ways to go about this. We cover two of them, but we spend the most time on Port Forwarding. If you haven't seen my "Home Network 101" video yet, I suggest you start with it if you need to brush up.

    • @BudgetNerd
      @BudgetNerd  10 місяців тому

      It wouldn't. You would manually change the rdp port on the second PC in the registry, then you could make a new rule for that PC, on the router, using the new port.

    i have 2 computers i want to acces, so i dont know what to do, i assume that i'l just need to put the other computer in other port, like 3388, but when i want to acces y dont know how to specify what port to use

    • @BudgetNerd
      @BudgetNerd  2 роки тому

      You could use a different port, but then you'd have to edit the registry to tell Windows what port to use. It's possible to use the PC you first remoted into, to them just remote into the other one.

    One thing a lot of these videos fail to mention, due to forgetting or changes with IPS, is that you need to have a static IP for portfowarding to work, and you need to do that through your IPS with an extra charge to your bill. I also THINK you need to have some ports opened through your router which the IPS also does but im not 100% sure on that 1

    Hi there, questions....
    1 can you use an ethernet cable to connect from one pc to another, instead of wi fi or bluetooth.
    2 when installing pro on pc over home edition can you use same product key on all computers, or do you have to buy a separate key for all computers.
    3 One its connected can you remove monitor, mouse and keyboard from remote computer.
    4 Can you connected the pc's together with special USB lead which i have, has plastic block in middle.
    from Fred in Essex, England...

    • @BudgetNerd
      @BudgetNerd  4 роки тому +1

      1) You would need a special kind of ethernet cable called a crossover cable.
      2) no, each key is for a particular version of windows. You could pay to upgrade it though.
      3) yes
      4) Not sure what USB cable you're referring too, but most likely not, unless that is the USB cable's designed purpose

      No need to enter the port number in the remote desktop window unless you changed it. Just need the public IP address. I do offer some troubleshooting steps in the video. Your public IP address could have changed, there are a few things you could double check.. or run through all the steps again to be sure they are correct.

    Really wish this gave clear instruction on how to do this from a Macbook to a PC desktop. My desktop is PC , my laptop is MAC & i've been pulling my hair out for days trying to connect to my desktop remotely (seemingly cannot be done unless i'm at home with my laptop connected to my wireless routers wifi network, which defeats the purpose). Tried everything (opening/forwarding port 3389 etc) & it still isn't working.

  • @MicroRedTS
    @MicroRedTS 4 роки тому +3

    First, great job at explaining- I feel like anyone could easily follow along with this tutorial, but please please do not port forward RDP. It won't be a fun time. There are bots set up that comb the internet looking for IP addresses that have port 3389 open then they are logged, and bad things will happen. Set up a simple OpenVPN server to achieve this in a much more secure way.

    While I appreciate the port-forwarding demonstration, I advise that you DON'T port forward RDP port to the internet! Make a home VPN using OpenVPN and forward the openVPN port to your router, the you can log in to your PC using your private IP address.

      @MrBiky 3 роки тому +1

      @@user-nu4cs1pg7q Did your external IP change? Do you have a DynDNS or a fixed IP? This could be one of the reasons it would stop working. Unless maybe your router has been reset to factory defaults (doubt it, you would notice it when connecting to WiFi, unless you left the default ssid and password, which is highly unrecommended). There could be lots of other issues.
      On a side note, I've been using Wireguard on off-sites and it's way easier to setup and manage than openVPN, but you still have to go through the same hoops, like getting a fixed IP or a dyndns service, and port-forwarding your VPN port (IMO not that hard, but I'm obviously biased, because I work in the domain).

    How about to access your computer securely from anywhere ? Open VNC ports on your network makes you a huge target. As seen by the hundreds of millions of login attempts in the logs. And wasn't TeamViewer hacked ? There is some SSH port forward screen sharing option if i'm not mistaken.

      TeamViewer was compromised a while back, but sure scrambled to fix it. Ready for the next compromise I guess. Several people have mentioned the openvpn, and that's a good idea.

    If you give access to your virtual machine remotely to someone can they access your host pc? (teamviewer or whatever)?

    • @BudgetNerd

      I'm no hacker, so not for sure, but for normal use they wouldn't have access to host pc.

      @@BudgetNerd No, I mean ,if I gave someone remote access to the Virtual machine then they would only have access to VM and NOT to host system ,right?

      I corrected an error in my response above. That is what I'm talking about as well. They wouldn't have access to the host machine.

    NICE GUIDE! Thank you! I had troubles understanding and doing this but now it works. Now i have only 1 question.
    Yesterday i set everything, went to work and it was working perfectly. Then i called my ISP(only ISP has access to router due to security reasons and dumb people doing dumb stuff there :D ) and added a 2nd routing to my laptop but now neither of them works. How can i add a 2nd pc in my network so i can access it too?

      What do you mean you "added 2nd routing to your laptop?" Sometimes your public ip address changes, could be that too.

      I figured it out. Added 3388 as external and 3389 ias internal and now i can connect to both

    When ever i put 192.168.1.1 into google it says the site couldnt be reached. Help?

    • @BudgetNerd

      You don't want to search for it. Don't put it into the Google search bar, put it in the address bar of your web browser. If it still doesn't work, you'll want to make sure that actually is your router's address. Instructions on how to find your routers address are in the video.

      @@BudgetNerd it says its 192.168.1.1 and i put it in the address like you did and it says it cant be reached

      I would check your router's manual for instructions on how to log in to it. Some routers might be configured a bit differently.

    It doesn't matter what port you forward for RDP traffic, it will be found and compromised and you will be screwed ! VPN or nothing!
