Love you mom - here's a box of worms and stuff you normally throw out. Only gardeners know how much love is in that beautiful tub of rotting waste. LOVE IT!!
I’m assuming you’ve quit making videos. I’m not seeing anything that’s not a year old or more, and your link for the worm checklist doesn’t work. I hope you just moved on to something else, and that there has not been some tragedy. If there has, you have my prayers. Your videos were great and I have been thinking of starting a worm bin to supplement my garden, but I’ll find other sources. Thank you for what you’ve given us gardeners. May God bless you and keep you.
Thanks for sharing this! Super informative and helpful. My family and I are urban homesteaders too. We just invested in some egg laying chickens and love growing our own vegetables in the backyard. Dad had his worm farm last year and we had some great compost as soil. But then he neglected his worms and they died :( So now I'm thinking of taking over and doing a worm farm. These videos couldn't have come at a better time! :)
Oh how exciting. Where do you urban homestead? And I’m so glad these videos are informative and helpful. I’m a comment or DM away if you need any help!
Thank you. This seems to be more up my alley. I guess I have been doing a modified container composting all along due to limited space. This is encouraging.
Yea mom for starting gardening!!!! Now for a little FYI....Typically [as it applies to a simple ball vlv]: When the handle of a ball valve is parallel to the valve or pipe, it's open. When it's perpendicular, it's closed.
THANKS for the manual!! Just received my worm composter (same as you have) and it's very useful to see how you start it. Will watch more from your channel for sure!
now I know why my worms are e3scaping into my trays below, I need to cover the holes and not have the trays underneath but add them above and let the worms migrate up to the next tray when the time comes .😉 i been doing it wrong it seems lol.
I need to get worms we are building raised beds and ai need black rich soil, so this is so interesting. So happy for your mom! Beautiful garden. Hope you have a good week! Wendy❤️🐞
@@heyitsagoodlife I will have to wait until we start our house build. That’s on hold for certain unexpected reasons. But yes I so want to start my worms. Where did you get the worm set up?
@@heyitsagoodlife We are doing okay. It is supposed to get in the 20s Friday here in southern Michigan. The only thing I have planted in my garden is cold crops so far. Bless you dear.
I am splitting my worm bin to create a second bin, so I can grow the population. Any tips on getting the worms to multiply like crazy? I’m getting chickens soon and would love to be able to give my chickens some worms. Thanks from South Africa
How fun. And hello! I would add some kelp meal (that really gets things going) and keep your bin’s moisture really well balanced. Also don’t over feed but it sounds like you know that by now! The more ideal the conditions the more quickly they will breed
Hey Natalie, got a question. My 'black gold' is ready to harvest! I've got a lot of worms! I've been trying the feed on one side of the bin and let the worms go to food and then you are supposed to be able to scoop up from the opposite side 🙃... well I think I have too many 🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛worms. I am stuck and I don't know what to do. And pretty much all that's in my bin is moist black gold and worms🐛! Help! My bin system right now is a Rubbermaid type bin. I drilled holes in the bottom and upper sides and lid for air. It must be ok because they are reproducing like rabbits 🐇🐇. I have the bin sitting on an old lid and it has nice worm castings that have soaked/leaked through. The 🐛worms are so happy 😊 I keep finding a bunch on the bottom lid and climbing up the sides and onto the lid! HELP ME! Thanks so much! Debra, your neighbor in Vista 😅 Ps. I still need to give you some fresh eggs 🥚 😁
Time to expand your worm farm. Split your bins. OR add worms and castings to your garden and leave just a layer or so of existing castings and worms in your and keep it going. Good luck!!
Excellent video! It is definitely on my list to start a worm farm as Leon's project. We have lots of worms in our soil at the pasture, I wonder how many we could collect to use in the worm farm :)
Hey thank you. That means a lot. And that’s a great idea. Let me know if you do it. I’m curious how it will work. You could totally use pasture worms. They may just feed a little differently than red wigglers it European nightcrawlers
What is the stackable unit called. I'm an Elderberry grower and have to be careful not to burn roots with other amendements...this is the ticket, thanks
Yes. Worm castings and worm tea will be your new bff. Did you know foliar feeding your plants worm tea can boost immunity to pests and diseases? I’ve noticed a huge difference. This stackable unit is an urbalive unit once available through gardeners supply. But you can easily make your own with some Rubbermaid tubs. Video on my big setup coming soon. I also have some ebooks available. One is a free quick start guide. It may prove useful to you!
Mine came with it. I would contact the company and see if they’ll send one. If not, you could fashion your own with a wire hanger and some Muslin cloth. It’s not that imperative to have luckily
@@heyitsagoodlife I'm new to all of this so I don't mean to be rude but whats the point? I'd have to buy a lot of dirt for the worm bin. Doesn't seem like the yield is great.
I hear you. & it shouldn’t require too much dirt really. For me the point is making a lot of compost in a small area. It’s also about stewardship, believing that caring fir these small creatures will teach me how to have the capacity to care for larger creatures later.

Your mom is awesome…. Anytime she wants to adopt me I’m down.. I’m only 29 and I love the garden, not quite a homesteader yet though.
Awe, how sweet that your Mom was inspired by going to HOA to become an urban homesteader as well. I

Satku--where can I buy container how much. very interisting. Thanks
amzn.to/3ITSHnZ
Coffee grounds go into which layer? Thanks
Can anyone answer my question? If you have a two bin stacking system, does the upper bin sit on the compost of the bottom for future migration?
New to all this, i would like to have worms available for fishing in our backpatio/pond. Will they multiply in this small setup?
Yep. Absolutely. One of the many benefits of a worm farm is they multiply quickly under right conditions. They would make great fishing worms
How often do you clean your box
That's really cool
should I add the kelp meal and azomite with every feeding?
Not necessary! :)
It doesn't seem like you're using many food scraps though! I thought the point of a worm bin was to help compost your food scraps...
You start with a few and then increase over time. As microbial land worm populations grow so too does capacity to compost quickly.
where did you get your fliter that goes on the bottom. Mine didnt come with that
Mine came with it. I would contact the company and see if they’ll send one. If not, you could fashion your own with a wire hanger and some Muslin cloth. It’s not that imperative to have luckily
Also, I notice you are doing wayyy less food scraps than in your earlier videos?
Correct, when I started vermicomposting, I was overfeeding them. I have a worm farm quick start guide coming out soon that will go over all of this!
Hey It's a Good Life awesome!!!!😊
What about doing this without that particular bin?
Same principles apply no matter the bin!
Where did you get that worm bin?
amzn.to/3ITSHnZ
Hi, can I use peat moss as bedding? Thank you!
That should work! I haven’t tried it myself. I imagine if it’s nice and fluffy it should be just fine
So it looks like you hardly use any food scraps.. Does that change over time?
Contrary to common belief. Worms do not eat much food scraps :/

👍🏻👍🏻
I think they eat half thier body weight per day, so 1 lb of worms eat half a pound of food a day.
