  • Its name, Rosmarinus officialis, is derived from Latin. “Ros” meaning dew, and “marinas” meaning sea. Hence, its common nickname “dew of the sea”.
This herb and its healing powers have been utilised throughout history to dispel disease, inflammation, infections, and all together, death. With this, it has also been known to improve cognitive function, enhancing focus and memory.
In folk tradition it has been said to ward off evil, attract happiness, and good fortune. Worn in the happiest of occasions, by the bride of a wedding, and in the most unfortunate, death. As rosemary symbolises happiness, remembrance, and death. Almost an oxymoron, I guess you could say.
In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Act IV, Ophelia utters, “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember.”
