I follow you guys because of your traveling content. Im not watching to see you guys drink. I think most or your viewers will agree. Im from SC USA and have been to Azores twice and went to Madeira last October (during the fires unfortunately) didn't get to see all the great places you talk about. Ive never watched any of you videos to see you get wasted. Keep up the great traveling content. That's what your channel was built on and that's what your viewers want to see.
I also struggled with alcohol. It was so bad I found it easier to log the days I didn't drink rather than drink. I woke up on morning with pancreatitis. I went to hospital they told me I had to quit drinking. Talk about having a life changing moment F me. 13 days later I got out. Quit drinking for about 2 months...One beer won't hurt, two beers won't hurt, one shot will be fine. Almost exactly one year later went back in the hospital. I struggled with this for another 3 years. In 2013 I had my last drink. The damage to my pancreas is permeant. I still struggle today with finding the fun in things. Im an open book with alcohol. I'm a closed dusty book on the shelf without. If it wasn't for my wife id probably not be here. Amalie is going to be your support and she will play a major roll in your success. Keep it up its not a sprint it's an endurance race and you'll be fine with Amalie by your side.

Never watched you for the drinking to be honest. After recently travelling long term i shelved the alcohol for a number of months (budgetary reasons) and after a while you wonder why you ever bothered with it in the first place. You'll get there. Its a lifelong habit and that mindset is hard to change. I had the same with smoking. Wish you the best of luck with it 👍

The main reason that leads me to watch your videos is a set of things, such as your friendliness, sincerity and humor that you always put into the content you cover on your channel, wrapped in the excellence of photography and editing. As for the rest... if you already know, never forget; Addiction to alcohol, drugs and gambling is forever, what can make a difference is having this reality always present in your head every day, as all it takes is a small temptation and consequent slip-up, for everything to go back to the way it was before, even if it's been decades since you last stopped drinking, etc...
All the best to you and please continue to be happy :)

I am a portuguese guy living in Copenhagen, so yes we kinda switched countries guys, and alcohol was not why I started following you. I started watching you because despite being Portuguese, you guys showed me places in my own country which I have never visited, I have learned that you can travel and work remotely, I got to know brands and products through your sponsored videos and used discount codes and you also helped me understand Danes better while adapting to this new culture. You inspire people even when your content is not about traveling, like watching Amelia being a interior designer and having a great taste decorating the house. I know alcohol its part of danish culture, and it is very common in those rainy days, when the sun sets around 15 o'clock, to just have some friends over and enjoy the evening by having a drink but guys remember you are in Portugal, there's a lot to do to keep your mind busy. If you want to stop drinking, find a purpose, try to see how can the content become even better without it, don't think that it will become worst! Maybe you can start a healthier diet and make content about that, which will motivate others to do the same. So good luck Joen!! Gonna be waiting here for the next video with the title "como perder barriga de cerveja em dois meses" 😁

It’s not about restricting your life but self control. Controlling emotional and physical impulses, including anger. Doesn’t mean not feeling or expressing, but doing so in a nondestructive way. There are some great philosophy books out there to study. No guru required.

Aw, I'm a new subscriber and I love watching you both talk and be vulnerable on cam. I'm rooting for you from Texas on your success being alcohol free. You'll live longer. 29 years ago, it was really hard for me to quit smoking. If I could do that, you've got this beat. Just avoid going anywhere where there's alcohol present until you get over the hump. You could use your youtube channel to help others dealing with the same thing as you. You could even use your channel as "healthy living" in general. I think your personalities are likeable and relatable enough to carry your channel in this type of topic. Don't give up! You can do this! Just be tough to fight through those physical urges to drink. Don't give in. If you do, doesn't mean you failed. Get up on that horse and keep riding. Enough rambling. You've got this!

Actually, I like watching you guys because you show very interesting places, and you both have great personalities. I actually cut out alcohol a few years ago, and I went through the same issue. I would always get bombed and be very outgoing. At first, without the alcohol, I was very introverted. But recently, I started training my brain to have a positive fun baseline. I believe it is actually working. I am becoming much more outgoing, just naturally...and with no hangover. rewiring your brain takes time and effort, but it's extremely powerful. Do you guys know the age demographic of your audience? I'm 53, moved to Portugal 2.5 years ago...which is how I found you in the first place. Sure part of the fun of watching you two was to see what Portugal had to offer ...experiences, places to eat, places to see, etc. you were like tour guides inspiring the next bucket list of things to do here. Anyhow...depending on your audience here's what I would suggest/ real estate (eg. best new developments)...food (eg. best sushi in Portugal)... experience (eg. best sunset cruise... best sunset locations for photography)...best deals for tours...best festivals to see. Best private beach area for a picnic. Best coffee...etc. It doesn't have to cost the most...just the best experience of getting the most value possible. Best castle to explore...there's so many things you can feature and have fun with. When you feature others, the focus is not directly on you...rather the viewer gets the pleasure of watching you experience something that will inspire them to think...oh, I'd like to do that! oh...as for the alcohol, your future self will thank you for your positive change now.

Hi guys. I’m in your boat Joan I’ve been drinking for years and only recently understood it isn’t what I thought it was it’s just all I know. I thought it was part of a good time also part of ignoring things that I know are wrong but don’t want to face… having a glass of wine or beer with dinner I love but it would always turn into more because I can’t have just one. I respect your honesty and approach to this because of being the same ( although I don’t think we are alone😂) your videos are more realistic when you drink because there are so many people like us but reality is we all see clearly and do better when we don’t go mad we just don’t see it after a drink. And of course, some new followers will appear along the way which will feel identified with your content. In my opinion, your videos are getting better and better. It's easier to just do "lifestyle" videos like many others do, but do that and show more substance is not so simple. I love to see your human and vulnerable side, bringing important subjects to the table, speak about stuff freely, and I think we need that to remind us of who we are.

This is a very important video many people should relate to. People who never drink will have a difficult time understanding that the social drinking culture is bigger than the drinking itself. It’s interesting to note a link to dementia for both heavy drinkers and non drinkers. That suggests to me that the social aspect of moderate drinking has health benefits. Yes, “chasing” that feeling is so true. We develop a tolerance to the extent that we might as well not be drinking at all. I do find that first or second drink is the sweet spot, though it’s too easy to continue drinking beyond that. Amelia is content with one drink; Joen three. Did you know females absorb alcohol differently than men?! Men generally need twice as many drinks as women to feel the same effect. Clicking glasses of Perrier with you! Cheers my friends! ❤

I sit there with them and have my 2 or 3 drinks over the course of 6 hours, and they can't understand how I can be happy if I am sober. I also have quit certain alcohols, specifically hard liquor like whiskey because it's extremely bad for your vital organs,so even though my doctor advised me of that info I decided to stop of my own accord.although I don't really understand why so many people say"when I start I can't just stop at one" ,who's counting?I guess if you have to keep track of how many drinking have then that maybe the definition of alcoholism.I don't, but then again I don't drink to get drunk. No judgement here just my personal observation.

You were young when you started your YT channel. Younger people tend to party more. Now you are a bit older and are feeling the effects more profoundly. If you can't moderate then abstain. I know it's super hard because I am also at a crossroads with alcohol and I'm 15 years your senior. The reason I unsubscribed from your channel was partly due to your behavior while drinking. You weren't being kind to yourself or others and I know you have a big heart Joen. It takes a lot of emotional intelligence to find why we self soothe and how we can be more kind to ourselves. We are rooting for you two and wish you can find the happiness within that you provide to others.

First, all my congratulations to Joen for is behaviour avoiding alcohol.
There are different perspectives , of course alcohol is not healthy...
All excess habits in life are negative, even water or love...
It depends on each of us...
The "control" is the key to enjoy the flavours, the colours, to catch the moment in the right way.
You are fantastic in your channel providing a lot for all, including for Portugal!
Maybe found the good balance to not fall in restrictions that restrict your pleasure in life/moments
Big kisses to both and success😊!

You are not boring... both your personalities outshine the alcohol induced high. Be yourselves and enjoy your beautiful new home in Madeira. You can talk about the history of your new home. Explore the deep sea that surrounds you. Stories of the first settlers of Madeira. There is so much more to do than look forward to having a hangover the day after.

Humans love to see others making fool of themselves, but thats selfish because they dont care about others.
If you think you should stop drinking go ahead, because thats the right path for you and the ones who care for you.

I finally gave it all up when I turned 45! Now I just have my casual glass of wine or beer with dinner and my espresso after dinner, espresso kills your the taste and need for more alcohol, at least for me it does.

Thanks for your honesty. Have you tried non alcoholic gin? It's amazing and gives you so many different options as the botanicals used vary and so you get to try so many flavours. Not sure if you get non alcoholic wine/sparkling wine in Portugal but you get an excellent variety in South Africa. Look into non alcoholic options - they are becoming more and more popular (think mocktails too) and you will have a whole new angle of recommendations for your channel!
I must say that I miss your travels in Portugal - loved these videos most of all. It was your vibrant personalities and the gorgeous scenery that made me watch - NOT the alcohol.

I restrict my wine intake to mostly half a glass or maximum 1 glass. It is a small french boule wine glass and only in the evening. I see other couples at times share a whole bottle for lunch 😮 I don’t know how they do it 😅 I get tipsy after 1 glass and don’t like the feeling.

I’ve been sober for over 30 years and guess what .. life goes on and it’s as fun as I make it. I love traveling, going to spas, relaxing in a jacuzzi with a cup of decaf. Yeah I even gave up caffeine cuz I got addicted to that too. I enjoy drinking decaf coffee.
I love history so I watch history related videos and then go visit those places. I just spent the new years holiday in Istanbul. There’s nothing wrong with alcohol if you can handle it but I never could, alcoholism runs in my family going back generations in the Azores. My own uncle who was a primary care doctor who moved to Oporto after med school died of alcohol related illnesses. Not many people got sober in his generation. Today we have so many treatment options . We’re lucky .
The whole idea of having to drink to have fun is ridiculous but it’s very popular belief. Seems to me that your drinking phase is over now it’s time to find out what you really like to do and then make videos doing that. How about starting a podcast?

It's rather because of your conversations, the things I learn, the humour, the relationship, your kind nature, the food, the landscape, the culture... and so much more. You please do not worry of not drinking. It's such a small part of your life and your personalities and dramas are really what people are here for. Godspeed.

I believe sometimes alcohool can bring us some happiness but it's certainly temporary. We must have the courage to resist if we don't have health problems after 50's. I myself do some kind of struggle to resist and maybe the key to resist is making some abstemic periods to have some balance.

It is not necessary to get drunk to have fun or be cool. That is embracing to see someone drunk. It’s a sign of no self control and sense of self. I love wine and mixed drinks. But!! I stop before feeling drunk. I do not see the fun in getting drunk and loosing control and possibly getting sick.

You both have amazing personalities. In fact, I really didn’t appreciate the times that you were drunk. I wish you both all the best on this new journey. I will definitely be watching. Your skills on making videos are amazing and you two have a wonderful relationship. Maybe one day you will be able to drink a glass of wine with a meal and stop at that instead of “eating the whole tree of apples”. Moderation is always best when it comes to drinking.
