As a Deaf person, his skills are awesome! He's a pleasure to watch.
You make it so much fun to learn ASL! My eardrums were cut to drain fluid from cancer treatments, and now all I hear is white noise and sound. So I am learning Signing but stores don't have employees who can sign, and leave out the deaf community. I think it should be mandatory in schools at an early age.
I did an oratory on sign language in elementary school for NSDA speech and debate. There are so many developmental and social benefits to teaching kids sign language, it's a no brainer. Elementary schools need sign language
I agree! Instead of all the "political correctness", being taught, why don't they actually teach them something useful!!!
i work at starbucks in an area w high Deaf population, my favorite part of the job is signing with customers!! nothing like being able to talk to someone in their native language, many are pleasantly surprised! unfortunately the pay and working conditions at so called "unskilled" jobs are poor and people with those skills tend to leave to find a better place to work. i've become fed up enough with working there that i am going into interpreting at college so i can leave. i will be sad to leave my Deaf customers without a signer, but i just can't work there anymore

Dr. Bill Vicars, you are STILL a got damn blessing. Stoked every time I pop another video on. One day I'll be proficient! I'm determined! I've got a long way to go but I've come so far since I started learning! I HAVE HAD CONVERSATIONS IN ASL! I can't even believe it. Thank you, this is one of the best things I've ever endeavored to learn. Maybe THE best thing. Being able to communicate with more people than I was able to before is phenomenal.

not sure where to put this so here is where I am and here it shall be: Did you know that your spell practice app stopped being accessible to ipad and iphone after iOS 11 and says Developer needs to update app to be compatible with iOS 11. I miss it!!! Please have it updated soon! Thanks

Just wanted to take the time to say thanks for all the wonderful videos. Currently working my way through the ASL 3 video playlist. Thanks to this great resource, I tested out of a full year of ASL and became a deaf studies major (career change). While I was working my way through your earlier videos, I would sit in on ASL classes at CRC. I'm currently a TA for first semester ASL. For the last couple semesters, the first semester has had about 50 to 70 students per class, by the time ASL 2 rolls around in our case, I've seen class sizes dropped to 15. It's a bit startling to go from such a large class to a nearly microscopic one, just curious if that holds true in your experience also. Thanks for being a Sherpa while I see how deep the rabbit hole goes! Thanks again :-)

Congrats on becoming a Deaf Studies major! (Tip: Do a few job searches early on and make sure it is a path that leads you to the type of employment you can make a career you will enjoy.) My experience regarding class sizes is that my classes pretty much remain the same throughout the semester. Oh sure, an occasional student has a life event necessitating an early exit -- but in general my attrition rate is minimal. So are you "currently" at CRC?
I’ve already begun the preliminary job searches, LOL :-) one of the best pieces of advice someone ever gave me. And judging by the large amounts of smiling and laughing present in the videos, it’s not difficult to see why your attrition rates are so low. I do suspect that some students take ASL for language credit, and then go on to do other things as well. I am currently at CRC taking deaf studies classes with Kim Harrell. My master plan is to eventually go to grad school for a disability studies degree. Growing up with cerebral palsy and loving languages seems to have coalesced into something awesome at last!

Question about the aside that started at 37:15, from context it didn't seem to focus on the vocab/coursework, rather an engagement with someone offscreen. At some point, your student says "interpret" or "interpreter" but my mom and I (who are LOVING learning with you!) had to know the juicy behind-the-scenes story!

As best I can recall, I think what happened was a student had a reaction right around the time I showed the word "class" on the monitor -- and then started trying to explain the issue.
So, this "ASL-3, day-2" student attempted to communicate and basically just spelled "slide."
So there I was trying to figure out what they meant by slide (thus you see me sliding around a bit like a doofus and/or showing a sign for slide as in "slick" or "glide."
Finally it became apparent that the person was referring to the PowerPoint slides not being fully visible on the secondary monitors and students who were not in a direct line of sight of the monitor behind me were only seeing half of the words on the monitor.
It wasn't a problem in general because most words can be figured out from seeing a partial word if you have enough context.
The (mildly) "funny" part here, what triggered the reaction became apparent to me when I leaned over (and gently nudged my assistant over) so we could see what the student was seeing and there it was -- from the student's angle the word "class" on the screen with the first two letters blocked.
Oh my! Tsk, tsk.
@@sign-language I can't exactly say why, but in my heart - I just knew the story was going to be wholesome and cheeky (pun intended) and a reminder of those days when college classes briefly shifted from formal to informal. Which only engages the classroom that much more. Thank you for that detail and hilarious aside!

hey, what happened to Sarah? she is not longer attending classes after lesson 30? she was good.
It's been quite a few years but I think the reason was that I wasn't teaching ASL 3 the semester Sarah took it. She did pop back in from time to time to help out whenever I asked (if her schedule permitted) -- and it was of course a delight to see her again. She went on to work in a Deaf-related field.
I have to put it on half speed or I only understand half ^^. thank you for the lessons!

Sometimes a student goes on to become an interpreter or ASL teacher and I stay in contact with them. Most however graduate, get a job in some other field, and move on with their lives. Even if I knew what a particular former student language model was "doing" these days I'd be unwilling to go into detail since you'd be amazed at how many fan-boys and stalkers become infatuated with these young ladies and want "info." (Which of course I'm not going to give out.) I typically just delete their posts -- and almost deleted yours. Nothing personal. I wish you the best. I just care about my students and want to make sure they are safe. It got to the point where I decided to have the students choose a "stage" name for recording purposes.
Makes perfect sense. I teach self-defense to kids and have a special course for ladies only. last week I did my first women's self-defense course for the deaf at a church in my area. So I totally understand your point. No offense, in fact I more than respect you and your policy. I've been learning ASL on my own and you are my main source. I certainly don't want to offend you or your students. That would break my heart.
