My friend got me a small bowl for Christmas, and as soon as I saw it, I was so happy. I've been wanting one for a few months, and as soon as I picked it up, I felt so much happiness. I gave it one gentle tap, and it sang immediately. With the tips from this video a couple days later, it's now singing more~
Excellent! And yes, they do like to be played. I find that the sound of the bowl shifts when it's regularly played, Great that your bowl has such a caring owner.
When to use my Tibet bowl. I start with holding bowl to chest like holding kitten. I let bowl come to warm for a couple minutes. Then I put paper in hand and polish the rim to remove oxide. Then bowl becomes personal to me. With smaller bowl I cradle on thumb and forefinger with two techniques. 1 - Full Moon - imagine sign language "o" which inspires natural tone. 2 - Crescent Moon - imagine sign language "c" which inspires harmonic tone of higher frequency. Sometimes I exercise sounding and I am in tune with natural tone. Sometimes, if I wish to inspire great acoustic energy, I use Crescent so to have higher energy with no chatter. It can make my ears hurt, but sometimes to release great stress is so effective. If I am purgated, I can have both tones express, which can be very rewarding inward. As much as I know, all bowls have two personalities. Also, I make customed puja from alternate maple and walnut so it works sound as if I'm always moving slower than I am so to not chatter. Polished with paper only walnut acts, maple relax.
You have created an excellent practice for yourself. Everyone has their own reasons for playing a bowl, and their own benefits that result. Great that you have found a practice that really supports you.
Thanks so much for your tips. it's so obvious that you master tibetan bowls deeply. Your message is so clear and helpful. I juste received my new bowl and had a hard time playing it properly. After listening to your message carfully I totally got it. It adressed exaclty what I struggleled with. Thanks so much. I now use my bowl for myself and to help others heal and it's such a blesing. sending you love and gratitude for who you are and your genuine way of sharing your knowledges.
Thank you for your kind words. We are passionate about our bowls and love playing them for many reasons. And we want everyone to be able to enjoy them as we do, Usually when someone has trouble playing their bowl, it is because of something quite simple - something they just didn't know. We're delighted that you found us, and that your bowl is now playing well for you.
This is a great tutorial. I have been playing crystal bowls for a while but i just got a set of Tibetan bowls and was wondering how to stop the vibrating that happens sometimes. This was perfect and to the point.
We got a small bowl and couldn't managed to make it sing even after several tutorials. This video was very helpful. I'll try a small sized stick next time. Thank you so much
You are very welcome. In the case of a playing stick, size really does matter, and choosing a playing stick that matches the size of the bowl will certainly help it to sing.
Just bought two bowls form a lady’s who bought them from where they were made all hand made. Very expensive, but I want to get 7 of them by the end of the year to help within my energy healing work. Going on a course soon and look forward to learning more about them and how to do healings with them 🙏
A 7 bowl chakra set is an awesome addition to a bowl collection. A few things to be aware of though. Tibetan bowls are not tuned to specific frequencies. The old bowls, made by the monks, were tuned to that individuals frequencies - that is the sound that resonates with them. Contemporary bowls are similarly not tuned to a specific frequency. We have sold a number of chakra sets. We own a set that was put together for us by a bowl master, and selected from thousands of bowls in order to find 7 that sounded right together - the Tibetan system is based on a pattern of 5ths. We have also sold contemporary Bowl sets where the bowls were selected and then tuned to give the right sound. This is also a difficult and expensive process. Trying to put together a set by buying individual bowls won't give you the sounds that you are looking for. Contact us through our website at soundwellness.com, and we can help you if you want. to purchase a set. A Contemporary sets run about $6000, a full moon set about $7000, and an old set will run $12000 up (ours was $30,000) You can get cheaper, but ours are selected by those who literally wrote the book on them.
Just trying to help. There are a lot of people with a singing bowl where it just doesn't play (well) for them. And I thing everyone should be able to enjoy the awesome sound and vibrations that these bowls offer.
Tnank you for the very informative video. I have had a small bowl for a long time and have never had a problem getting it to sing….. I recently got a much larger bowl and could not get it going. I was using the leather end, as I do for my small bowl. I did not know you could use the wooden end! It works beautifully….
Some bowls will play well with the leather end of the stick. Some won't. Almost all bowls play well with a wood stick. Often the larger, hand made bowls do well with leather. Machined bowls tend to work better with the wood. I prefer leather, when it works, because, for me, it often brings out the lower frequencies of the bowl.
Thank you for this tutorial, I was struggling to make my new Tibetan singing bowl sing and had no idea of how to make it work but your tutorial helped. I tried holding it the way you did in the video and it suddenly started singing beautiful and sonorously!
Awesome - Happy to have helped. It's usually the simplest of things that we're doing that prevents a bowl from singing. Enjoy getting acquainted with your new friend!
Thank you so much. I just got my first bowl a little while ago and I've been having a hard time trying to control the chattering. That sound really bothers me, so after watching your video I tried it again and the problem is solved. Thank you so much! Now I look forward to getting more bowls. 🙏🏼😊💐
Ty so much. Very informative and helpful. I just received my 14 inch hand hammered Tibetan bowl and it’s so special. You’re video has made it more so. 🙏🏻💙🙏🏻
such a well delivered video - clear, to the point, and well paced. So very helpful. Thank you very much. I came to find out how to play a tibetan bowl, and learnt exactly that. It was a valuable and pleasurable experience. Much appreciated
When you purchase your bowl, play it first to make sure that the sound resonates with you. Each bowl has its own sound, and not all bowls will rfersonate with you.
In the event you have been in a Stryker inTouch Bed bed in the ICU setting, if you were listening to the sound therapy option that these beds had to offer, chances are you have heard this kind of WONDERFUL MUSIC!!!! I actually happen to know this, because for a month, I was in ICUs and was in a Stryker inTouch Bed. I remember how much I enjoyed this. I was on a Ventilator and almost died.
The sound of the bowls is tremendously calming, and relaxing. Your body knows how to heal, and the calming sounds support that. Listening is wonderful, holding the bowl, and feeling the vibrations is amazing. We love them all. Glad to hear it helped during your stay.
Sharon Carne I have the music from the Stryker inTouch Bed bed on my phone, as I called Stryker a few weeks ago and I had done this to see if I could get the music files from their inTouch bed. They transferred the files by means of email and I put these files onto my iPhone and now listen to the music from the Stryker inTouch Bed on my phone. Now I have Tibetan music to listen to whenever I want to. YES, I loved that bed so Much, and now actually have music from a Stryker inTouch Bed ON MY PHONE!!!!!!
I just got my singing bowl today and wasn't able to get it to sing when following the instructions that came with it. After watching your video I tried it again and it sang instantly! It's easy...once you know how! Thank you so much from doing this video! Thank you for letting us know that our bowls like to be played. I will play mine as much as I can!😊
It's usually the little things that people "assume" you know that keep a bowl from singing. I'm happy to have helped, and I wish you many, many hours enjoying your bowl.
Where is the best place on the side of the bowl to hit with the felt mallet? High by the rim? Middle side? Low near base? I loved this teaching example-thank you so much ! ❤️
That is an excellent question, and the answer is, 'it depends'. For me, I strike the bowl just above the middle. It gives a good sound that lasts a long time. However, there is a lot of physics that goes into the sound of your bowl. And the geometry of the bowl is what controls the sound. Because of that, where you strike the bowl will determine the sound that your bowl makes. Even striking (a hand made) bowl on the opposite side will change the sound. I also find that striking with the mallet square to the side of the bowl (ie hitting on the flat of the mallet) tends to bring out more harmonics, and striking with a corner of the felt mallet brings out lower notes. On the bowls that I play at least. All that said, I don't believe there is a right or wrong. I would stay near middle to the upper part of the bowl. And maybe not right at the rim but a little below. That gives me the best, longest lasting sound. But every bowl is unique. So rather than concern yourself with what's best, consider the sound, and where do you need to strike your bowl for the best sound? for you! And above all, simply enjoy the sound and the vibrations it offers.
Thank you for that. We have been using the bowls for a very long time, and I wanted to give our audience a good understanding so they can enjoy the bowls as much as we do. I'm delighted that you found the answers to all your questions.

Thank you for your comments. Playing a Tibetan bowl isn't hard - almost anyone can do it. Just a few simple things to know and the bowls will sing beautifully.
Very informative, thank you. I couldn't get my bowl to sing (just brought my first one) until I watched this video, now shes literally making my heart sing 💓
Thank you very much!!! I bought my first one, it worked well in the shop, but could not get it to sing at home. You have answered all questions I had in my head, informatively & laconically.
You are very welcome. We love our Tibetan bowls and have sold a lot of bowls over the past dozen years. And we really want everyone with a bowl to be able to enjoy them as much as we do.
Thank you. Playing a bowl isn't difficult - just a few important things that many don't know. Once known, almost everyone can play their bowl beautifully - that's our goal.
New to singing Bowls. Thanks for clearing up some of the questions I have. I'm eager to try different "sticks" to find what tones and techniques I can develop.
That's part of the experience - learning how your bowl sings, and the (often) different sounds that come from different sticks (softwood or hardwood) and the leather sticks. You may also want to explore using a felt mallet to tap the bowl.
They are, and the benefits are enormous - major stress busters, bringing a sene of calm, lowered blood pressure to name but a few. Enjoy your new friend!
You are very welcome. Bowls are very powerful tools for managing stress, for calming the nervous system, and as an aid for meditation. And we want everyone to be able to enjoy these benefits from their bowls. The last thing we want is for someone to get frustrated because they can't get their =bowl to sing, and then it ends up sitting on a shelf.
You're probably right! We have 9 bowls we regularly use. And a half dozen more that are used occasionally. And because we sell bowls at our workshops we also have another 20 to 20 bowls on hand at any time. They are all amazing.
Thank you. We enjoy making these videos. The bowls are powerful sound tools - we just want people to get the best from their bowls, and that starts with knowing how to make them sing.
Sometimes, size really does matter. With a bowl, a stick that is too small can't get a bowl to sing. Too large, and it may sing, but it can get very unwieldy to play.
Yes, that sometimes works. When tapping to start, and then switching to a stick, often the contact of the stick to the bowl will stop the sound, so you may not be any further ahead. That said, it's working for you, and thats great. I much prefer the sound of the leather over wood - no scraping sound. Great that you have a bowl that sings well for you. enjoy it to the fullest!
Awesome that you are looking at using them for healing - they are powerful tools for healing work, for dissolving stress which is a leading cause of dis-ease, for clearing, and for chakra work. Like all powerful tools, they can support , or cause harm. I highly recommend that you seek out appropriate training if using them with others, (if you have not already done so) to ensure that you are using them for the greatest good.
You are most welcome. Bowls are amazing tools, for a multitude of benefits - for relaxation, for reducing stress, for resetting our bodies natural frequencies when they are out of alignment, for meditation, and so many more. But it all starts will getting them to play well for you.

You're probably right! We have 9 bowls we regularly use. And a half dozen more that are used occasionally. And because we sell bowls at our workshops we also have another 20 to 20 bowls on hand at any time. They are all amazing.
Thank you
Awesome thank you!

Thank you for your tips! Mine wouldn’t sing with the leather side and now I understand why
Happy to have helped. There are some nuances to playing that they don't tell you when you buy the bowl.

Good teacher
Thank you. We enjoy making these videos.
The bowls are powerful sound tools - we just want people to get the best from their bowls, and that starts with knowing how to make them sing.
Thank you so much for making this video, I was wondering why mine would not play!!! It’s the stick, need a bigger one.
Sometimes, size really does matter. With a bowl, a stick that is too small can't get a bowl to sing. Too large, and it may sing, but it can get very unwieldy to play.
I found with machine made ones you can start with wood and switch the leather side once it’s
Going,
Or gong it then go
Yes, that sometimes works.
Thank you 🙏🏻💖
you're very welcome!
Play it often is a good reminder. ❤
Yes - bowls love to be played! And they will sound different than if you leave them on the shelf and only play them occasionally.
Thanks😊
You're welcome - thanks for finding us!
Great tips
Thank you.
Thank you, exactly what I was looking for, I am going to use one in healing work.
Thank you so much

You are most welcome. Bowls are amazing tools, for a multitude of benefits - for relaxation, for reducing stress, for resetting our bodies natural frequencies when they are out of alignment, for meditation, and so many more. But it all starts will getting them to play well for you.
