Squirrels are cool dudes. Years ago we had a group that hung out in our yard for tidbits we would put out for them on the top of the wall on our back porch. Then the snow hit, the back porch was full of snow, 3 feet deep wall to wall, needless to say, there was no opening the storm door to put out goodies for the squirrels. Those little beggars were line up sitting on the wall eyeing up the back door. So .... we simply opened the kitchen window just high enough to put the goodies on the ledge and the squirrels came up one by one, took a piece (just one, no cramming their mouths), and moved on. Who knew we would be opening a winter outdoor cafeteria for the squirrels. They got a variety of shelled nuts, dried fruits, and peanut butter on crackers, bread ..... sometimes open face, sometimes closed sandwiches. And, they always ate the cracker and the bread before coming back for seconds. That was a fun winter.
It’s a love/hate thing. I love it because it makes finely divided pieces that the nitric can penetrate easily. I hate it because it makes me jump, every time.

Here before the Rocky Mountains Range the eastern diminishes and the fox squirrel becomes prevalent then as altitude increases the jet black pine squirrel eye catching strikingly beautiful. Deeper into the wilderness the many rock and ground squirrels varieties do not see visitors as a threat and become hand tame. Approaching the western desert the variety of species becomes great. But I think it is the jet black foxy looking pine squirrel which draws most attentio.

I have over 200 jackdaws who visit me every morning for feeding. They love peanuts. When I first started feeding them 28 years ago only 12 came down. If fledglings get into trouble when they first leave the nest they come to fetch me to assist them by making a crow sound (Danger) at my window. Especially if a cat is on the prowl. If I chase the cat off, they assist me by swooping down above it.
Those squirrels were so cute, it's another thing I miss since coming to my current location. These carat scrap refinings are always fascinating, a really pretty bar from only one refining. 👍

I really enjoyed when the free nitric reacted with the silver scraps. Ask when you add nitric to the muriatic acid on the gold. It’s a very nice looking reaction. And of course my favorite reaction, the smb crashing the gold out of solution. This video was awesome

You can get the basic equipment needed for about $500. That does not include the acids, just the flasks, hot plate, vacuum system, and bubbling device for the stock pots.
Thanks for feeding the squirrels, a lot of people know me as Squirrel Bob because I spent many years rescuing squirrels here in the UK. I manly rescue rabbits these days due to a back injury that causes constant pain in my legs so it's not easy dealing with squirrels. I pass them on to a local rescue fiend and take care of rabbits because they are more manageable in my condition. If you look on my channel there are some rescued squirrel videos posted a few years ago.

However, no matter how much I look - online auctions in my country end up going for more than the gold price. At least the solid 14K and ups. I find it hard to estimate how much gold there is in the plated/filled/vermeiled but my rough math suggest the yield to come at a loss. I guess you need to know where to look for the best finds, not just online auctions.
Yeah people on sites tend to not sell at a loss for themselves. From what I recall, Sreetips wife frequents yard sales and similar where people sell old and unused jewelry and that tends to be cheaper. Also easier to haggle I would assume. There was a video some time ago where he mentioned buying a bunch of jewelry from a friend of the family, or maybe it was just a value consultation or something similar. I'd love to both own gold and to do something like these refinings. But checking ebay is like "Oh you want 1oz, or 1/2oz of gold? That's most of your savings for something shiny to look at." ... And then it doesn't seem like a good idea anymore. :(
People just don’t understand gold. It’s not an investment. It’s insurance against the paper money printers. Holding dollars is a bad idea because they are losing value (in terms of what they can buy) very fast. Holding your wealth in gold is a much better idea because it will retain purchasing power that the paper money loses. If you need paper to pay your bills, then sell a little metal. However, if you don’t have any savings to begin with, then it doesn’t matter. If you spend all your money as soon as you get it, then buying gold won’t work for you.
@@sreetips Very good point. I invest in gold and silver, mainly silver, because it's something I can reliably hold on to that will only increase in value (generally speaking). I also would like to inquire about purchasing a small sealed bottle of the aqua regia if that's at all viable. I'll use the proper channels to reach out in more detail.

@sreetips I'm a retired plumber, and it always amazed me watching soldier and brazing rods melt and flow into a joint. I even melted copper and brass just to watch it flow.
To get finer shot size, would you be able to pour the good from the dish through some sort of colander/strainer to break the stream up before it hit the water? The high temp melting the strainer or the metal sticking too it may be the only problems but it’s a thought.
Two small remarks: You used to keep the last nitric of the nitric boils apart instead of putting it in your silver jar. As you are running behind on processing your silver cement, I suggest you start doing it again. I was very surprised you did only one refining, curious about the refiner's assay.
Odd reaction when you added the nitric for the aqua regea? Looked like it clouded up a little, looked odd to me at least! Great looking result in any case!

I did the math on this video and at today’s spot of $1865.80 the value of the scrap was $3053.64 the value of the refined 24K was $3179.30 a profit of $126.66. A lot of effort for $125.00!
@@SuperS780 He's saying that the value of the scrap 10k and 14k totaled $3053.64 and the value of the refined 24k bar totaled $3179.30. So the amount gained from refining was $126.66.
You don’t have to refine it. The karat gold can be held just like it is. It will track right on up with the bullion. But in my case, I can’t keep from doing it. God help me, I love it!
Scott, sending in karat scrap to the big refiner gives them room to fudge on the pay out. Plus they don’t give credit for the silver and platinum group metals. By sending them high purity metal, I get to keep the silver and PGMs. Plus it lets them know that I know what I’m doing. And gives them no room to fudge. An old mentor of mine said, “sooner or later, the refiner almost always ends up cheating the customer.” I think he was right. And it’s also part of the reason I don’t refine other peoples material.

I really liked how that ingot was bulging out the top of the bar mold you poured it into, kinda surprised the surface tension was enough to keep it together there.
If you watch carefully, you’ll see that as I began the pour, about 75% of the molten gold came out of the melt dish into the mold. Then it stopped flowing (because of my poor pouring technique). I had to tilt the dish and get the rest of the gold to flow out of the dish. Fortunately, the gold already in the mold stayed molten just long enough for the rest of the charge to join it without forming a very ugly bar.

I always enjoy watching your refining videos and have an experiment proposal for you: Foreword: Since a long time I noticed, that you are boiling AR at a quite high temperatur with the resulting vigurous boiling going on. I never do that, as I have noticed that I am loosing too much AU saturated AR with it. Maybe the quantity is not significant enough to be noticed by you? Experiment: Next time you dissolve a specific, weight and quantified amount of gold with AR with the vigurous boiling ongoing, catch all the vapour with a destillation apparatus. Check for AU presence and precipitate AU for weighing to quantify the lost gold. Same is valid if you are boiling down your AR solution to saturize it.
Senior, you once used a melt dish with a hole drilled into it to make smaller droplets of gold. That combined with some spinning water, stir bar? Could easily make a pile of gold bb’s I think. Have you tried it again?
What if you poured the inquarted gold from a higher height? Kind of like they pour shot from a shot tower. Obviously you couldn’t build a shot tower that high inside buy would pouring from a couple feet high make smaller pieces or would it be a big safety issue doing so?
I know times get hard and the platinum thing was frustrating. It sucks when buyers back out, too. Keep working slowly and carefully. Be safe, be meticulous. That is what makes you better than everyone else doing this on UA-cam. They are just copying your methods anyway. So many people love these videos, including people who have zero interest in chemistry or precious metals but just like watching someone work with preternatural patience and diligence.
@@sreetips btw have you considered calcium hydroxide as a flocculent for the iridium in the pmg solution? Can sodium sulfate or bisulfate be used to precipitate gold instead of metabisulfite?
I don’t think the sulfate will work, but I know the sulfite will. I have some straight reagent grade sodium bisulfite. No “meta” in it. I’ll give it a try the next time I do a gold refine.

i guess it would be an extra thing to do but if you pour the 6% k load in to a jewlers bar and roll a thread of the gold silver mix shouldnt you be able to get a long tiny rope a alot of area with out jetbeams etc? guess you can twist it by takinig to ends in a drill to stretch untill it breaks
Have you ever sent in an assay sample of the nitric acid boils (prior to aqua regia) to see how fine the results are? Same question for the cement silver product.
Do you make your ice cubes with distilles water? I learned about making clear ice and the bubbles in the ice are from impurities being concentrated in the center of the cube as it freezes, i wonder if it contributes to the cloudiness of the aqua regia
I use distilled water. But tap water, contaminants measured in parts per million, is fine. 999 parts per thousand is industry standard for pure gold. Parts per million will not report in a precious metals assay.
Hey Steetips! I became absolutely in obsessed with your videos when I saw the 10 lb gold plated pins being recovered. You’ve inspired me to try to refine some gold myself. By now I think I’ve watched most of your videos. What advice would you give me in terms of safety? I can only do a recovery on my parking spot and I’m trying to figure out how to build my fume hood. If I may can you please make a few videos on safety precautions you use and what do you when something goes wrong? What would be the safest way to do a gold recovery in my parking spot if I’m not pressed for time? What is the safest way non toxic to recover gold? This would be really helpful for me! Thank you! I Just ordered all the chemicals and lab equipt...and crucible etc.. I been saving up gold from computers, phones, t.vs, stereos....you name it, for 2 years now. It's time I stop being a wuss and get this done. Hoping for 1/2 ounce. Good luck to ya,
I've been watching for quite some time and was always curious about waste chemicals. Using the silver to consume the excess nitric leftover from refining and so on. At the final form, is there anything that you have to eventually dispose of or do you just use the various leftover chemicals again and again to the point that they are no longer harmful? Probably a stupid question, it just seems like your system makes full use of any residual chemicals and I was always curious if eventually there was anything that requires disposal or if it is a self-supporting system that consumes waste as it goes
That busted heating element is most likely easy to fix. Chances are it's just a loose connection. All you need is a heat stick, some tin and shrink tubing. Probably would take five minutes.

The first thing you MUST have is a fume hood to draw the fume away from you. No way to safely do these reactions without one.

I just wondered if you had ever used ammonia boil in your process at the end when your cleaning the sponge. Love your vids sir you do stellar work 👌
No, the only time I use ammonia is to dissolve the ammonia-soluble brick-red palladium salt in my Pd refining process.

Are the prices you would get paid, for 10 and 14k the same as 24k though? Just curious if you did the math for the weight of his scrap as 24k?

I really liked how that ingot was bulging out the top of the bar mold you poured it into, kinda surprised the surface tension was enough to keep it together there.
If you watch carefully, you’ll see that as I began the pour, about 75% of the molten gold came out of the melt dish into the mold. Then it stopped flowing (because of my poor pouring technique). I had to tilt the dish and get the rest of the gold to flow out of the dish. Fortunately, the gold already in the mold stayed molten just long enough for the rest of the charge to join it without forming a very ugly bar.

I always enjoy watching your refining videos and have an experiment proposal for you:
Foreword: Since a long time I noticed, that you are boiling AR at a quite high temperatur with the resulting vigurous boiling going on. I never do that, as I have noticed that I am loosing too much AU saturated AR with it. Maybe the quantity is not significant enough to be noticed by you?
Experiment: Next time you dissolve a specific, weight and quantified amount of gold with AR with the vigurous boiling ongoing, catch all the vapour with a destillation apparatus. Check for AU presence and precipitate AU for weighing to quantify the lost gold. Same is valid if you are boiling down your AR solution to saturize it.

Senior, you once used a melt dish with a hole drilled into it to make smaller droplets of gold. That combined with some spinning water, stir bar? Could easily make a pile of gold bb’s I think. Have you tried it again?

What if you poured the inquarted gold from a higher height? Kind of like they pour shot from a shot tower. Obviously you couldn’t build a shot tower that high inside buy would pouring from a couple feet high make smaller pieces or would it be a big safety issue doing so?

I know times get hard and the platinum thing was frustrating. It sucks when buyers back out, too. Keep working slowly and carefully. Be safe, be meticulous. That is what makes you better than everyone else doing this on UA-cam. They are just copying your methods anyway.

Can sodium sulfate or bisulfate be used to precipitate gold instead of metabisulfite?
I don’t think the sulfate will work, but I know the sulfite will. I have some straight reagent grade sodium bisulfite. No “meta” in it. I’ll give it a try the next time I do a gold refine.

i guess it would be an extra thing to do but if you pour the 6% k load in to a jewlers bar and roll a thread of the gold silver mix shouldnt you be able to get a long tiny rope a alot of area with out jetbeams etc? guess you can twist it by takinig to ends in a drill to stretch untill it breaks

Have you ever sent in an assay sample of the nitric acid boils (prior to aqua regia) to see how fine the results are? Same question for the cement silver product.
I’ve sent in melted gold after nitric boils, before refining with aqua regia. It was 992.
Do you make your ice cubes with distilles water? I learned about making clear ice and the bubbles in the ice are from impurities being concentrated in the center of the cube as it freezes, i wonder if it contributes to the cloudiness of the aqua regia
I use distilled water. But tap water, contaminants measured in parts per million, is fine. 999 parts per thousand is industry standard for pure gold. Parts per million will not report in a precious metals assay.
Have you tried the Bernzomatic ts8000 for melting. It is supposed to put out some serious heat.

You’ve inspired me to try to refine some gold myself.
By now I think I’ve watched most of your videos. What advice would you give me in terms of safety? I can only do a recovery on my parking spot and I’m trying to figure out how to build my fume hood.

I've been watching for quite some time and was always curious about waste chemicals. Using the silver to consume the excess nitric leftover from refining and so on. At the final form, is there anything that you have to eventually dispose of or do you just use the various leftover chemicals again and again to the point that they are no longer harmful? Probably a stupid question, it just seems like your system makes full use of any residual chemicals and I was always curious if eventually there was anything that requires disposal or if it is a self-supporting system that consumes waste as it goes

Try granola bars on the squirrels.
It may be the receptacle if both units are not putting out proper heat, or a voltage drop off somewhere in the circuit.
I think it’s the thermostatic controller, plus connects in constant contact with acid fumes while running.
Is the precipitated gold not as fine as the colloidal gold you sometimes get when removing the base metals?
Correct. Colloidal gold is so fine that it passes through a filter paper.

That busted heating element is most likely easy to fix. Chances are it's just a loose connection. All you need is a heat stick, some tin and shrink tubing. Probably would take five minutes.
