    Had a clicker for months and forgot about it until seeing this video again. I figured I'm at the clicker stage based on the video so I put it on my bow. After the install, my whole shooting changes instantly. I'm no longer rushing shots, I realized my groupings were not consistent before because my draw lengths were never consistent. I realized my accuracy was off because as I tired from shooting, I was collapsing which I never notice. The first day of the clicker, I'm grouping arrows right on top of each other which I've never been able to do. I believe I'm now a clicker fan.

    THANK YOU. Finally I have a clear, detailed explanation of the clicker and its use. Moreover, you understandably focus this video on developing shooting FORM, and you identify the clicker as merely an indicator of proper and consistent form. I have a long way to go but, thanks to you, I'm learning how to get there.

    Just started using a clicker today, and Damn! my draw before was really frickin' inconsistent. My groups have already tightened a heap, but I can tell I've got a long way to go to get used to this. One benefit, I reckon, will be to improve my draw consistency for when I am shooting a more barebow, traditional, instinctive style. I'm hoping that shooting with all these different "training wheels" will actually make me a better traditional archer down the track.

    Before I got used to the clicker, I had two problems with my form and draw.
    When it went off too soon, it was usually because I had drawn incorrectly with my back, and I often leaned backwards to help the arrow get through the clicker. This will of course cause an inconsistent form and it's not good for your back.
    When I couldn't get the clicker to click, it was often because my shoulder was to high. Then it's better to take down your bow, start over and make sure that your shoulder is put in place.
    I wouldn't advice anyone who's just starting with a clicker to adjust the clicker after every shot, whether it's because it goes off too soon or doesn't go off at all. It would be smart to get someone to look at your form before you adjust it so you don't mess up the consistence.
    For me, at least, starting to shoot with a clicker was like crawling to hell, but it's really worth it!

    Wow thanks for the tip re: ignoring the clicker. I just had mine. My coach had me go through like four months of form and release training before I get my clicker. I the first time I tried it I was like "oh my gosh, it's not going off" or "oh my gosh, it went off even before I reached my anchor". She said the same thing that I should condition my mind not to think of the clicker and instead keep doing what I do and just let it click

    Go Monash. There was no archery club at my campus when I was a student there back int he day. Tried getting into archery years ago but then we had a child and suddenly there just wasn't enough time in the day. Now that he's old enough to try a bow I'm trying to introduce him to it slowly and get back into it (for casual shooting, not club level stuff). Your videos are gold :)

  • @shuumai
    @shuumai 9 років тому +6

    Hold up. I learned to NOT allow the clicker to trigger the shot. The clicker indicates when the draw length is correct. At that point the shot could be taken or not. If you allow the clicker to dictate when you shoot, hearing someone elses clicker might cause you to shoot too soon. That's the theory anyway. It's actually happended to me, or I pulled through a little too soon and shot before I was truly ready. Now if I pull through at the wrong moment, I'll either let down or continue to hold until the right moment.

      @NUSensei  9 років тому +1

      Maximus Joseppi It's a subconscious reaction for me, and in fact the sound of a compound bow shooting resembles my clicker. Some archers, in a competition environment, synchronise their shots so that they're not distracted by this.

    • @LegitimatelyAxeL
      @LegitimatelyAxeL 9 років тому

      It becomes more about the feel rather than the sound the more you practice with one. I'm honestly surprised that you haven't destroyed your clicker by shooting it without clicking.

    • @NUSensei

      I actually let down the shot rather than shoot through the clicker. It's an annoying reaction though.

    Releasing on the clicker becomes pretty instinctive - dangerously so. I remember when I was a schoolboy practicing drawing my bow by myself in the back-room (instead of doing my homework); I decided to try it with an arrow nocked to get a better feel, the clicker went off and I loosed without thinking. The arrow went right through an expensive lampshade and 1cm into the wall behind. I spent the rest of the evening trying to cover-up the damage before my parents found out (which they never did).

  • @hikaru9624

    I want taught that with my recurve! I was told not to immediately release the arrow once the clicker clicked as that would develop a bad habit.

But after several shots when I felt tired at back muscle and elbow, the clicker didn’t work well anymore. It took long time to click, and the groups split up./Bkk Thailand

    Today, lol! Got myself to try the clicker and ofcourse no one around yet to mark my constant full draw length against the clicker, I end up by having my arrows all around the target!! 🤣🤣 fraustrating yes but will get there eventually! • @helphelpimbeingrepressed9347
      @helphelpimbeingrepressed9347 6 років тому

      I don't use one just yet so take with a pinch of salt but I doubt it. I have seen many archers with a little end cap on the clicker, though I think that's more for the risers paintwork than the arrows. Besides many of my aluminiums having long thin lines of paint worn away when they slide along another arrow in the target on impact.

    • @jonedwards7019
      @jonedwards7019 6 років тому +1

      No, but if it did then the clicker would have far too much tension on it. Normally they just rest lightly against the arrow.

    Great video! I was wondering about the clicker extension on the riser. I've read that the clicker should be as vertical as possible, yet I see pros using clickers that are at a high angle, touching the very end of a long clicker extension. I would think that ideally arrows should be cut so that the arrow tip is at the edge of the riser when the clicker clicks. Is there a good reason for having longer arrows that require a long clicker extension?

    • @NUSensei

      Cutting off 2 inches will significantly stiffen the arrow spine. This may affect your tune, though this can be partially rectified by using heavier points.

      Using the clicker requires very fine control. Although using the clicker can be good training tool, I would not prioritise its use until you have a strong grasp of basic form and that you can comfortably draw the bow consistently.

      That is sound advice: back when I was shooting my Hoyt Medalist setup, in the 80s mainly, to 1990s, I didn't ever use a clicker or kisser button (on my beginner Stemmler bow) until I got the Hoyt bow, and only then did some of the coaches and range people gradually suggest introducing the clicker and kisser button into my routine. Even graduating to a CheckIt (like a newer Shibuya competition) sight was a major upgrade and adjustment. My clicker was a basic small aluminum one that just glued onto the riser itself, or was screwed-in, cannot recall now. I also always used a plunger button (adjustable) and wire drop-away rest. I always thought you were supposed to be trained to release as soon as the point went through the clicker, but perhaps not. The trouble with waiting too long with a recurve is you often start shaking, your sighting can get way off, and the shot can be fouled, so it's best to train to release as soon as you can past the clicker sounding point.

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  5 років тому +1

      All Olympic recurve risers can use clickers. Traditional bows can also attach a special kind of clicker. Compound bows don't need clickers as the bow has a max draw length that is calibrated to the user.

  • @angel0apthy
    @angel0apthy 9 років тому

    Interesting that you say to set the clicker with 1/2" left to come through - I was told the opposite (ie to have about 2mm left to come through). Do you not find that it makes it a lot harder to pull through with such a long way to expand? I'm not sure I could get 1/2" through the clicker without just pulling my hand back and moving off my anchor completely

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 років тому

      As I said, it depends on how you've been trained. I personally prefer a closer "trigger", but for people starting out and for those who have clicker panic, it's more important to give more room for error and work on expanding through the shot, starting from a relaxed position and then powering through the clicker in one motion. As you train, this motion becomes more refined, allowing you to come much closer the clicker, and also having better control of the draw weight.

    • @shuumai
      @shuumai 9 років тому

      Kisik Lee talks about the draw and expansion as being a circular motion as opposed to moving straight back in a line. He says that a smaller circular movement creates a larger linear change. That might be part of the secret of how expansion works after achoring. For example, if I pretent like I'm holding a bow at anchor with my shoulders hunched forward, the linear distance would increase simply by pushing my chest forward and drawing my shoulder blades together.

    • @joehutchcraft1675
      @joehutchcraft1675 7 років тому

      Luke MacInnes No.
      The reason being, the magnet is only on the clicker bar, traditionally on sight mounted clickers. Your clicker has a small magnet which connects to another magnetic metal attached to the wire used in the clicker. Your arrow is non-magnetic, meaning no interferance to the shot by magnetic force.

    How is it a good idea to cut your arrows if you need them at a longer length for your draw length? I need 31.5-32" arrows and cant just cut them down if the clicker doesnt engage. Isnt it better to have the right length arrows then the option to use a clicker?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  7 років тому

      If you're shooting in this style, the clicker is paramount. It's actually the defining piece of equipment (compared to the sight). Without the clicker, it is almost impossible to replicate a shot to the level of consistency that is expected. If your arrows are extra-long, use a sight-mounted clicker.

    • @leeprice133
      @leeprice133 7 років тому

      Not sure how this would matter actually... if you have a long draw length and arrows matched to this, the tip of the arrow is going to end up in a similar place.

      Lee Price What NU is saying, is the clicker gives you a continuous point of release. Being within general draw will create a variation in your shot process, meaning inconsistancy on target. Clickers also give you an avoidance of creep. Creeping in archery is when your arrow moves forward during the shot process. This can happen when you relax while aiming, which means you need to fight to continue the shot. Fighting your shot will, with-out doubt, create more fatgue for the archer in question.
      Less fatgue, better shots placement, more arrows fired.
      More fatgue, worse shot placement, less arrows fired.

      if you have a great anchor you dont need a draw checker do compound bows have clickers no you have to remember to release the arrow with it travelling back from the target, archers of normal club standard the release is the most important thing

    • @electoplater
      @electoplater 6 років тому

      i agree with everthing you said but the arrow creeping forward has nothing to do with the clicker its because you havent tranfered the draw weight to your back muscles or you simply over bowed or your shoulders are open to the target another problem i have seen this so many times on the shooting line people come up to anchor and stop pulling so the arrow moves forward

    hi nu sensei, i finally got used to the sight, now i'm thinking about getting the clicker
    one problem is i have samick sage and as you know, it doesn't have the clicker plate
    is there any alternative for that?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 років тому

      Andre Nathan Some clicker are stick-on and don't need to be screwed in. I think the Cartel clicker is one of those. Other clickers, like the AAE, can be mounted onto the sight bar.

    • @TheLinAndre
      @TheLinAndre 9 років тому

      Doesnt it need a clicker plate to click?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 років тому

      The clicker plate is an extension. If your arrows are short enough, the clicker can be placed over the riser. That said, since the Sage is a wooden riser, this might not work out too well. I generally wouldn't suggest using specialised target equipment like a clicker on the Sage.

    Hi +NUSensei, can I still use a clicker if my riser doesn't have a clicker extension?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  8 років тому +1

      Yes. However, you have to get your arrow length exactly right, or else you'll have to make your own extension. The clicker is meant to contact the extension or the riser.

    I have a question. I am considering obtaining a clicker. I noticed that you have a small bar there that makes the clicker sound. my issue is that is where I have my stabilizer. Would that be a problem?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  8 років тому

      That's odd. There is no stabiliser bushing there. What bow are you using?

    • @arlenefried2008
      @arlenefried2008 8 років тому

      I apologize, I was looking at it from memory. My stabilizer goes below the handgrip. I am able to place the actual clicker but not that little bar it is clicking against.

      Most Samick bows are for recreational shooting and do not have a fitting for a clicker or clicker bar. You could you a magnetic clicker. AAE has a nice one that should work.

    What you think about two stage clicker (youtube search: Archery 2 phase clicker)?
    Can it be used in tournaments?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 років тому +1

      I don't think there are any rules that prohibit it. That said, I'm not really sold on the idea. The demonstration in the video is very poor, showing very shaky clicker control and possibly clicker panic. If this is the case, the 2-phase clicker will actually make it worse, as it causes more dependency on the clicker rather than encourage the archer to develop a smooth, fluid shot process. I can see some ways in which it may be useful, but in my opinion it's excessive for most shooters.

    • @karpenter.
      @karpenter. 9 років тому

      +NUSensei Thanx for replay... As a beginner I find it very useful... and because I'm beginner I can't comment about "developing a smooth, fluid shot process". Best regards

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 років тому

      My question would be "Why do you need a second phase?". I can see where it can be helpful in that if you use it properly and consistently, you have indicators for both your anchor and your expansion, but the video doesn't demonstrate that well.

    • @karpenter.
      @karpenter. 9 років тому

      +NUSensei Yes, the your point is right, with two stages I have two indications - for both, my anchor and my expansion... and I don't need to watch clicker position on arrow point (when using regular clicker) and targeting - with two-stage clicker I can targeting without fear that I will overdraw...

    do all archers wear fishing hats?

    • @Fearofthemonster

      It is the best hat to wear while shooting recurve. Mostly the hats hit the string.

  • @eqlzr2
    @eqlzr2 5 років тому

    Haha. It's ironic that apparently a lot of recurve shooters won't or don't shoot compound bows because they're too fiddly. No clickers for me, or sights, or stabilizers, or etc. KISS for me. ;-)

    Hey, there is a clicker that a barebow shooter can use. It mounts to the limb and has a string or a chain that connects to the bow string. The reason why some clickers can't be used is because they could potentially be used as a sighting device. smg.photobucket.com/user/yohon/media/IM000353.jpg.html

      So I’ve got a beginners bow a glove and a target.i like gun target practice but ammo is so expensive and I really just like the tranquility and focus that comes from target shooting. How should I structure my practice? At the moment I have been doing 20 paces, content with just hitting the target and getting a 6 inch grouping. As I improve in technique.and confidence what ranges should I start practicing in for some completion level shooting

      I believe several used them in the most recent Olympics. The magnetic flip rests are currently in trend, though it doesn't mean that a plastic
      rest can't do the same job. It wasn't that long ago that these were the standard, and records were shot with them. While I currently don't use one, they're my go-to for backups and recommending to new archers.
