I'm a new driver and was always very nervous and scared of going the down highway. My hands would tremble and my legs would feel weak. I overcame my anxiety by my determination to not let it get to me. I started by using the highway at less busy times. I tried using the highway for every destination I needed to get to. The more times you go down the highway the better. First, try going down the highway to somewhere very close. A destination that's only one exit away. As you build more confidence take a longer route. Also, it's okay to stay in the "slow" lane. Just make sure you're driving within the posted speed range.
However the "slow" lane is not the best choice because you have to cope with exits. But is good because it is a problem of people inserting highway and not yours.
@@andrewrich6905 Yeah, I'm not sure about other highways but sometimes if you chill out in the slow lane for too long and you're not paying attention, you'll catch yourself drifting into an exit because it eventually feeds into an exit lane. I'm just scared of all the other cars around me. This is why I rather drive at night (which they say is harder) cause there's not as much cars but still, scary 😭
What scares me is when someone drives too close to me or when I need to go on the highway but the ramp is too short and that cars drive too close for me to squeeze my car in between. Those things weren't an issue for me until I had an accident with a heavy load truck. Since then, I'm fine driving around in the city, but I dread highways.

thank you for your lovely video, very well thought out, you considered others who are going through this fear, myself included. your video has definitely helped me to intellectualize the fear more. Btw, I haven driven on the fwy/hwy in almost 3 years
Driving on a Highway is not that hard, just make sure you’re at speed limit, use your turning signals for everything and know where you’re going ahead of time to be able to switch lanes to exit.
I’m here because literally no one teaches me anything about safe driving. I always gotta teach and be confident in myself, it’s so frustrating when you got no one supporting you. I was lucky to get my license in September! 😭
This guy doesn't understand how anxiety works....a lot of people are not scared of accidents solely - it's much greater than that. The main fear is losing control, disassociating while driving, the feeling being on the highway produces getting so intense you can't handle it etc. Nothing to do with statistical safety or someone hitting them
Just because your have more distance on the highway don't mean it's safer. At least on the main road the accidents are way more minor. If you have accident on the highway it's game over
This is bs people tailgate me and merge lanes all the time...not only that I could lose control of my engine or it could blow up on high speed. No wonder I get panic attacks on highways and use backroads...
I feel like I'm ready for the highway but at the same time I'm scared as shit because I been in a fatal accident before where my big sister lost control of our 4runner causing all 5 of us(dad, three sisters, me) inside the car to scream and we flipped over and we legit flipped like 3 times and my one of my little sisters(13) died on impact. Ever since then, I'm terrified of the highway. And this was two years ago and every time I'm in a vehicle with a friend or someone, I always tell them I'm low key traumatized and I get scared when I see them not paying attention or driving too fast/ wreckless. But yea anyways, I hope one day I get over the fear of driving in the highway and actually get used to it cuz there's many places i wanna go with family and friends and ofc we would need to take the highway and I want to be the one driving because in general, I feel like I'm a safe driver even though I haven't driven in the highway but yea hopefully one day I'll get over the fear and conquer it.
It’s way more accidents on city streets than on freeways so therefore freeways are safer. In town you have to worry about red light runners, pedestrians, kids, stop signs, cars backing up etc.
I hate getting on the interstate everyone always doing 80 mph and changing lanes like crazy I'm just ready to shrivel up and die I hate this world I wish I lived in a farm town
This is truly one of my biggest fears. My whole thing is the merging and the exits 😩. It’s like when you gotta get over it’s hard cause there’s usually so much traffic. And don’t get me started in the trucks
I'm too nervous to drive on the highway. I drove on the highway the other day, but after that I was nervous about it. I don't when I'll on the highway again. I just hope I follow the rules of driving on the highway.
The main reason I’m afraid to drive on the highway is because you can’t stop most of the time, or at least it’s difficult to do, plus of course the high speed. For my first time practicing on the highway I’m just gonna get on the highway on Sunday morning when there’s hardly any traffic lol.
Not surprising! I stopped driving for a number of years and before drove all the time. Now I am terrified of highways and I mean gut wrenching terrified!
I wish I didn't have the panick attacks because it is almost dilbilitating when I want to go somewhere that should only take an hour it takes 2 hours lol... it's funny but it's not. I figure out the route by the streets just to avoid the freeways. i can start out okay then all of a sudden I get the sweating hands and the panic then I'm looking for the nearest exit it's like all of a sudden I'm aware that I'm driving on the freeway.. it's nuts
Im afraid of going somewhere new, a new city or place. Road signs/ marking are terrible. Getting in wrong lanes at roundabout is my fear. Entering and leaving gets me confused. So many lanes and marking. I'm very nervous getting in car when travelling long distances and unknown territory.
Whats funny is I wasn’t even scared of driving on the highway at first. Hopped right into it no fear when I first started driving. Fast forward a year later my first car i had the car engine messed up and my car started losing speed in the middle of the busy California highway. I was lucky to be able to switch lanes and pull over without getting hit. Engine was toasted. To this day I get major anxiety when on a highway. I only drove one one once since then when I was driving me and my friend to another city and it was horrible I was so thankful when we made it there and back
Hello! I just saw your video, thanks so much for it. On my case I have another fear regarding driving on a high way and it’s the fear of being trapped or having the pressure from people behind me. I do not fear speed, I know driving on a highway is really safe and fast, and I had drove on highway before and It was good, but I had some bad experiences and a fear of loneliness and sensation to be trapped that really makes my driving on highways impossible right now. I want my freedom and confidence back. :(
I know i have a fear of highways because i dont like the speedlimit and i fear something might happen, i like driving other wise but soon as i get on the highway i start having bad tics because lf the anxiety:( i’m really sad about it because i’m so close to getting my license and everyone else has already gotten it :(
The worst part of being on a Highway is that other drivers are more experienced and I am new to driving so if I mess up I will feel so sad. I haven't even given my written test yet. Oh lord.
I get my license in 2 months I’ve only driven on the highway once after I got my permit I was scared of getting bumper to bumper with someone so I’ve been driving on neighborhood roads in my small hometown
Phobia's are unrealistic fears. We know it's not dangerous to do the things (driving) that trigger a panic attack. We avoid dong the things that cause panic attacks because we fear the panic attack itself not the activity that triggers the attack. Therefore telling myself that driving on a highway is safer than another road does not work because all I know is that driving on a highway triggers a panic attack. It's basically fear of a panic attack even though the driving triggers it. Get it?
Highways and interstates don't worry me in the slightest. I can drive those all day. It's the on ramps that scare me. You got to constantly shift your eyes forward back forward back forward back. Don't want to pull out in front of people that are still going to fast. A large majority that I notice go to the opposite lane to make room for you to get on. But not all people do that and they are the ones you have to look out for.
I'm less worried about my driving and more worried about the 10% of people on the road that drive like idiots. Taking the I59 to I65 in Birmingham AL on a roadtrip had me wonder how these people survive. It was noon-ish traffic but damn. I had to go 80mph in a 60 to keep with the flow of traffic, since I had people almost rear ending me constantly when I was going the speed limit. And people were *still* flying past me at 80+ mph, changing 2+ lanes at a time weaving through the smallest gaps. I had to hard-brake to avoid someone changing lanes into me when they underestimated their spacing. Now, I time my roadtrips to avoid any major cities during lunch or work traffic.
Being a starter, I was thinking that using a GPS (that which suggests which lane to take) on an interstate rather than having that knowledge already. What's ur advise on that? Thanks!
Use to be good on the highway. My fear is getting off the wrong exit or when they are multiple signs. 595 in florida is so bad, sometimes it seems I am in the wrong lane. Use go on the overpass, but can't because my heights are so bad. What is so crazy I drove my aunt to airport in the morning 4:00am, dark, but there was not many cars. Today I am going to airport at 6:30 . I can do this I feel so 😢
I ride a motorcycle I’m afraid of going fast, I’m worried about the amount of people driving on their phones who change lanes without looking and can sideswipe me
I don't agree that it's safer to drive on the highway, but I definitely FEEL safer driving on the highway because there are no pedestrians. The thing I fear most driving, is hitting someone that I don't see, which would invariably be a pedestrian to me as naturally the thing you look for is predominantly other cars.
I do accept what a few other comments said - it's not as easy than some people make out to beat the fear of driving. Be cautious and seek advice from other people. I looked a few sites and found plenty of great help by searching google on websites like Roys Quick Fix. I wish you luck and hope you succeed!

I’ve had license bout a year and a half now and I never take the highway I’m afraid hate that I’m scared of the highway cause I have to always put my gps on avoid highways so takes me longer to get to Destiination 😒😒
I'm from the city and driving never been really a fear for me. On the freeway/highway i get a little fear but usually it goes away after a while however once I moved from the city to the country with no lights and dark highways more anxiety kicked in. I almost had a car accident trying to see the road ahead of me while going 60 to 80mph. I literally almost hit the edge of the ramp that merges to the highway that heads north to where I live because I couldn't see anything and yes I wear glasses. During the day I'm absolutely fine.
I have an problem with putting my foot on the brake when I panic .& slowing down ! I know that’s the worse thing to do & that’s what’s scaring me to try it
I've been on the highway 3 times so far, and I haven't been able to change a lane yet. I keep imagining a car I didn't see crashing right through me when I turn into their lane...
Have you looked up the statistics though about highway accident rates/death rates vs city streets? You said it is safer, but what stats have you looked up to prove this? I live in the Houston area. I have looked up the stats and idk where you live, but here the highways have the highest crash stats and very high death rates from those crashes. Highways are not safer just because you are supposed to put more distance between you and the other cars. No one does that. If I were to do that someone would just see that open space and cut in without a blinker and occupy it.
I never drove on a Highway and after I saw many People drive like Idiots I will maybe never go over my fears to drive there. I should try it, but I need a Person near me that makes me feel safe. I had/have also fear of heights, but does the Edge walk in Toronto ... LOL Maybe it works the same way with driving on a Highway ? My Father dream about that I drive someday on a German Autobahn .... must be a really bad Nightmare 😅also not every dream come true 😅 Top Video and very good Tips + I can hear you !!!!
safer because you are leaving more distance between the car in front of you? WRONG, people will just cut into the space you leave and you will have to slow down. it is safer to not have red light but people who weave in between lanes at high speed is way more dangerous.
I certainly agree with a couple of others have written - it's more difficult than it sounds to overcome fear of driving. Be cautious and seek advice from others. I looked round many websites and discovered some great help by searching google on websites like Roys Quick Fix. Good luck and hope you are successful!
I drove on expressways that have 2 lanes but I get so nervous when it’s the 4 lanes. I feel like I’m gonna crap myself and what sucks I gotta drive 2 hours up to Kenosha Wisconsin from Chicago and to add to my anxiety I’m afraid I’m gonna get lost ontop some idiot driver will crash into causing a horrible accident
Ha ha! Sorry, but for someone who suffers from anxiety and a phobia of driving on highways your video is entertaining, but useless. I KNOW that driving on the highway (motorway in the UK) is safer than using local roads. I know that if we stick to the slow lane people other drivers will usually leave us alone and overtake us........BUT, a driving phobia is a completely different 'ball game'. The terrifying anxieties we experience are baseless, we know that only too well (phobias are illogical fears of course).
I totally agree. I'm not afraid of driving on a highway. I'm afraid of the panic attack caused by driving on a highway. It's known as anticipatory fear. I know that it is a statistical fact that it is much safer driving on a highway than driving thorough an intersection, but that doesn't matter. I can drive 60 MPH on a side road through an intersection (if I have the green light) but have a panic attack doing 45 MPH on a highway. Useless video. This guy doesn't have a clue about panic disorders or so called phobias.

I am so nervous tomorrow I'll be driving on Highway first time
RA A howd it go
Cactus he died
@@cccckxcckeo lmfao
Driving on a Highway is not that hard, just make sure you’re at speed limit, use your turning signals for everything and know where you’re going ahead of time to be able to switch lanes to exit.
R u any better?
I’m here because literally no one teaches me anything about safe driving. I always gotta teach and be confident in myself, it’s so frustrating when you got no one supporting you. I was lucky to get my license in September! 😭
This guy doesn't understand how anxiety works....a lot of people are not scared of accidents solely - it's much greater than that. The main fear is losing control, disassociating while driving, the feeling being on the highway produces getting so intense you can't handle it etc. Nothing to do with statistical safety or someone hitting them
for me it’s not that i’m scared of the cars around me but instead i get this weird roller coaster feeling that i hate
Same😖
Thank you for your UA-cam videos
I’m overcoming my phobia.
Rob in Toronto
Just because your have more distance on the highway don't mean it's safer. At least on the main road the accidents are way more minor. If you have accident on the highway it's game over
Glad to know I’m not the only one; used to drive to Moab all the time and now I can hardly go 20 miles outside my home
lol the main reason why i'm scared of the freeway is bc i've seen too many accident compilation videos 😅 i feel safer on the main roads
You can overcome the fear! It's actually really safe!
I'm trying but l still feel the anxiety
I hope things have gotten better for you
It’s way more accidents on city streets than on freeways so therefore freeways are safer. In town you have to worry about red light runners, pedestrians, kids, stop signs, cars backing up etc.
Thank you so much Sir! You heighten my confidence & comfort of driving with every lesson. I appreciate you.
I hate getting on the interstate everyone always doing 80 mph and changing lanes like crazy I'm just ready to shrivel up and die I hate this world I wish I lived in a farm town
The scary thing are the tailgaters. If the car in front of you suddenly stops, then the cars following too close behind you are bound to hit your car
This is truly one of my biggest fears. My whole thing is the merging and the exits 😩. It’s like when you gotta get over it’s hard cause there’s usually so much traffic. And don’t get me started in the trucks
Great video, all of your driving lessons has taught me driving.
I use to be a truck driver. And now I'm afraid of the freeway and I don't know why.
I know i have a fear of highways because i dont like the speedlimit and i fear something might happen, i like driving other wise but soon as i get on the highway i start having bad tics because lf the anxiety:( i’m really sad about it because i’m so close to getting my license and everyone else has already gotten it :(
I'm afraid of actually getting on the highway then I am once I'm on it
I just drove on the highway for the first time today and it's not that bad
The worst part of being on a Highway is that other drivers are more experienced and I am new to driving so if I mess up I will feel so sad. I haven't even given my written test yet. Oh lord.
I get my license in 2 months I’ve only driven on the highway once after I got my permit I was scared of getting bumper to bumper with someone so I’ve been driving on neighborhood roads in my small hometown
First minute and I already like because so much info. Good work
Phobia's are unrealistic fears. Get it?
Yes exsctly
I'm scared to merge because I feel like you don't have enough time to merge and some cars will not allow you to merge.
That's what keeps me off too. Maybe some day!!!
people who see him driving on the highway: Damn this guy must be spitting straight facts
This video is working perfectly in my mobile phone thanks for sharing this amazing'video 👍👍😄
Thanks Mike for your advices
Highways and interstates don't worry me in the slightest. I can drive those all day. It's the on ramps that scare me. You got to constantly shift your eyes forward back forward back forward back. Don't want to pull out in front of people that are still going to fast. A large majority that I notice go to the opposite lane to make room for you to get on. But not all people do that and they are the ones you have to look out for.
This made me feel a lot better thank you!
I love your video driving tips right to the point easy and simple to understand keep up the good work God Bless You
Being a starter, I was thinking that using a GPS (that which suggests which lane to take) on an interstate rather than having that knowledge already. What's ur advise on that? Thanks!
Did it help?
Use to be good on the highway. My fear is getting off the wrong exit or when they are multiple signs.
595 in florida is so bad, sometimes it seems I am in the wrong lane.
Use go on the overpass, but can't because my heights are so bad.
What is so crazy I drove my aunt to airport in the morning 4:00am, dark, but there was not many cars.
Today I am going to airport at 6:30 .
I can do this
I feel so 😢
I ride a motorcycle I’m afraid of going fast, I’m worried about the amount of people driving on their phones who change lanes without looking and can sideswipe me
I don't agree that it's safer to drive on the highway, but I definitely FEEL safer driving on the highway because there are no pedestrians.
196k views, I am happy I am not the only one with this fear.
I do agree with you have written - it's not straight forward than some people make out to overcome fear of driving.
Be careful and take advice from experts. I searched many websites and found plenty of great help by searching google on websites such as Roys Quick Fix. I wish you luck and hope you succeed!
I hope Alvin and the chipmunks aren’t bothering you anymore so you can focus on the road
I’m afraid of driving by myself on a road that I can’t stop and turn around like the thruway. It makes me feel trapped!
I know that’s the worse thing to do & that’s what’s scaring me to try it
Am really nervous..
I drove on the highway my first time ever driving
I hate highways because im scared of missing my exit. Making an impulsive move to not miss my exit. That's my fear.
People break so much on the highway that is what scares me.
Driving on the highway makes me feel like imma skid off into another lane and crash or some shit.
I respect u brother✊
safer because you are leaving more distance between the car in front of you? WRONG, people will just cut into the space you leave and you will have to slow down. it is safer to not have red light but people who weave in between lanes at high speed is way more dangerous.
It’s the merging for me like I can’t
Thanks for this tip
I certainly agree with a couple of others have written - it's more difficult than it sounds to overcome fear of driving.
Be cautious and seek advice from others. I looked round many websites and discovered some great help by searching google on websites like Roys Quick Fix. Good luck and hope you are successful!
Im scared of how big it is. Im horrified at the idea that i could end up in a different state
I drove on expressways that have 2 lanes but I get so nervous when it’s the 4 lanes.
The terrifying anxieties we experience are baseless, we know that only too well (phobias are illogical fears of course).
aimeemacdn so very true!
I had that driving phobia ever since I was with my uncle on the highway and had a accident, I was not driving but it was a scary experience
interesting points ,if anyone else wants to discover driving anxiety try Debuncar Fearless Drive Aid (just google it ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my friend got excellent results with it.
Phobias are learned behaviors and can be reversed by desensitizing.
