I read Dying earth on Sam's recommendation and, as a DnD nerd, it was a revelation. Dnd is based on the Dying Earth series, and NOT Lord of the Rings.

@@MotherFucker1984 Of Dnd? Well you have to appreciate that at the time all those pulp books had influence. Conan played it's part. But it's widely known that the magic system of dnd is "Vancian" i.e. Jack Vance. I never understood what that meant till I read it.
Dying Earth is where you get the idea of wizards needing to memorize their spells and expend that memorization upon use, and having only a limited number of spells you could know, based off the power of each spell memorized. In the very first book one spell is called Prismatic Spray, which Gary Gygax directly steals for the game.
There is an Appendix N, that lists the influences behind dnd, by the author himself

It wasnt "pure pursuit of knowledge" that formed these creatures in the great library of man but an old manmade demon (The demon wasn't created by the knowledge) born from sadism and foulness that's described as "face" by Sam. This demon dwells in the library and want to devour all the knowledge to dominate all life on the dying earth and employs the specters as lackeys only held back by the keeper of the library called "The Curator". So it would be more of a thing of immorally misusing the knowledge, the knowledge itself is rather neutral. Although I like Sams interpretation on this. If there is no higher motive behind the pursuit of knowledge or even worse superficial or outright evil motives behind it, it will cause great pain to all life.
The specific story from dying earth where all this happens is called "Guyal of Sfere" (whos is as Sam said the protagonist) and is definitively one of the really good entries in the series.
