Her voice got to be so huge the higher it went! She was in very good voice here - especially considering her age... All the fast (little) notes were on point! Good for her at 60 that she still had the High E flat! Her stamina was INCREDIBLE.
Chapeau!
Her voice doesn't match up with the actual scene where in Lucia is going crazy and losing it. Her voice is just lovable and very captivating that it's hard to relate it to the story that in this scene she is actually losing her sanity.
Of course her voice is lovable she's wondering to meet her beloved Edgardo! The singer is intended to sing in a passional mood. What do you think someone crazy should behave?
@@JoanSutherlandFanthese poor young things who know nothing about the art form in general and Lucia specifically continue to shoot off their uninformed opinions all over UA-cam. It makes me sad that they can’t/don’t/won’t “get” what a stupendous achievement this performance is, and makes me furious that they even dare to criticize it.
@@joshuamcpherson007 Why would she try so hard acting despite the fact that she wasnt good at all i? It means that acting cannot be separated from opera. Use your mind a bit, it would help you.

@@ir3356 we care because she is historically one of the greatest singers of all time. She is 59 here and still singing this most difficult roles superbly. This role made her a star. Ah La Stupenda!! La voz más hermosa de la lírica!!
The fact that Dame Joan was still able to thunder out notes above the staff in her late 50s and early 60s is nothing short of amazing!

The one and only, the incomparable Joan Sutherland.
Even in her late 50s-60s she could sing better than today's sopranos

She is in even better voice here than she was four years earlier at the Met performances.
LA STUPENDA!!! Insuperable e inimitable en su canto y arte
Makes me so proud to be an Australian :)
UNICA e INSUPERABILE! La cantante ASSOLUTA!!
A M A Z I N G !
That high e flat is greater than the careers of all our pop stars put together.
And modern sopranos as well
Divina!!!!!!!
This is a performance from Sydney Opera House, 1986.
To only have been there....
This is Sidney 86
We know that
My only complaint are - again - in Sydney she's paired with singers well beneath her status.
Yeah, you would.
In my opinion, Sutherland and her voice held up better than Gruberova.

Damn it she is really bad at acting hahahahah
Sutherland was an opera singer. Not an actor. Understand? Let me know if I'm going to fast for you.
