      Nice scientific answer mr scientist.
      I would have thought you'd have come up with something more along the lines of fellow rocket climate scientist al gore's usual response,.... "are you a denier".
      You know him right?
      He's the guy who flew around the country in the early 2000's in his CO2 spewing jet telling us that if we didn't do something to "stop climate change" by 2007,... that by 2014 there'd be no ice in the Arctic. That sea levels would rise several feet,.. actually 20 ft.
      Here we are 8 years past al gore's falling off the cliff point and there's as much ice in the Arctic as there's ever been. And sea levels have risen less than about an inch. Well within century rates.

    I had long denied climate change. My primary issue was that the climate change scientists kept referencing 1996, a year affected by El Nino. Then, the climate deniers started using that year to show there was no temp increase since 1996. And, well, then I started looking into it more and became convinced of climate change.

      Specifically 1998 had the El Niño event but so did 2016 and it was much hotter than 1998.
      It’s why I like to look at rolling averages. Like 5, 10, or 11 year rolling averages, the rate warming slowed in the 2000s but sped up in the 2010s. But global warming will accelerate through 2100.

    • @prophetzarquon1922

      @@PremierCCGuyMMXVI I find it extremely disturbing that all our "normal" temperatures reported by US meteorologists, recently updated again, to drop previous (lower temperature) decades from our averages, to keep the figures indicating what is a "normal" temperature, closer to the modern higher temperatures we should expect.
      www.noaa.gov/news/new-us-climate-normals-are-here-what-do-they-tell-us-about-climate-change
      So, we now get told an 80°F/26.6°C day in December is "normal", when just 60 years ago it was unheard of.
      If one kept pouring more & more effluent into one's living room, neck-deep could become "normal" pretty quick if one bases those norms on current conditions rather than historic ones...

    • @PremierCCGuyMMXVI
      @PremierCCGuyMMXVI Рік тому +4

      @@prophetzarquon1922 I don’t get what your saying here. Yes NOAA updated their averages, they always do. They aren’t trying to hide global warming, it’s just easier for meteorologist when giving the almanac. If you want to see the time series, the data is all there.
      Btw the 1991-2020 average is 0.45°F warmer than 1981-2010 across the united states although that varies region by region. Sure that is significant but it’s not like a 30°F difference or something. And worse case global warming will see probably a 10°F rise in US temperatures by 2100 over 20th century norms. That is dangerous but again the weather report is different from a climate report.

    • @prophetzarquon1922
      @prophetzarquon1922 Рік тому +9

      @@PremierCCGuyMMXVI I have no problem with NOAA updating 30-year averages, or with _calling them that._ What's problematic, is meteorologists on TV calling those averages we can expect nowadays, "normal".
      They're not normal, they're worsening due to our actions & will continue to get worse faster since we continue to increase our rate of pollution each year.
      When some places are seeing winters consistently 10 degrees warmer than a handful of decades ago, calling that "normal" is a disservice to the concept of averages. The whole point of taking an average over time, is to improve accuracy with multiple samples. Discarding older samples _is fine for prediction of what we should expect this year,_ but terming new higher temperatures "normal" is where the old proverb about sitting in slowly boiling water, starts to become literal instead of allegorical.

    • @texaswunderkind
      @texaswunderkind 2 роки тому

      Science isn't black and white. Climate change is a theory. Anything that cannot be proven without a shadow of doubt is a theory. Gravity was a theory. Evolution is a theory. The Big Bang is a theory. Special relativity is a theory. Plate tectonics is a theory. There is no way to create a control group planet with no pollution and then compare it to Earth to see if it warms differently. But the really crazy thing is that pollution is horrible for our health regardless of global warming. Cancer and all sorts of other health problems would drop dramatically if we weren't ingesting carcinogens from industrial processes. Based only on that we should be trying to reduce pollution.

    • @rbxless
      @rbxless 2 роки тому +44

      @@texaswunderkind You just proved that you have no idea what a theory is. A theory (in the scientific method, not "normal" language) is basically the conclusion of experiments and observations. Gravity is indeed a theory, but not a soul denies that gravity exists. Galileo Galilei famously dropped a feather and (something else i dont remember) from the tower of Pisa to see if weight influenced the speed of an object towards the ground. Feathers, however, have wind resistance, so he got a light object with the same wind resistance as the heavy object. And he saw that they fell at the same speed.
      The scientific theory is that all objects fall to the ground at the same speed regardless of weight.
      When you say "theory", you're talking about a hypothesis. A hypothesis, for example, is that heavier objects fall to the ground faster. Then we do the experiment; dropping the two objects, and the result proves the hypothesis wrong.
      While science isn't black and white, there's a consensus that the greenhouse effect exists and that human GHG emissions are behind climate change. Also, you have no idea how experimentation works. You don't interview all 360 million people in the US to ask them what they think about marriage equality; you take a group with a few thousand people and put 'em on a graph. That's an experiment.

      Global warming is real, but the alarmism is unfounded. The alarmist like to portray everyone that doesn't think it is a crisis as a climate denier but the number of people that actually deny climate change is extremely low. The debate is between 12years (now probably 6) till the death of the planet, vs in 200 years 5% of Florida will be under water and people will have plenty of time to move out of the way. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
      I personally doubt that me giving more power and money to the government will somehow magically fix global warming issue.
      I also feel that global warming maybe a price worth paying in exchange for cleaner air and energy. Though I do support doubling the US's nuclear power plants as a way to reduce carbon while still maintaining our lifestyle.

So scientific teams will basically focus on the projects that will grant them the most money (which is reflected in how popular climate science is in the community these days). The works of scientists tend to be more political these days than ever because a big chunk of those grants come from politicians. Some might come from other special interests. Which is why all studies need to be taken with healthy skepticism and awareness that there's usually going to be an opposing view. And opposing views that aren't popular tend to be suppressed in the scientific community (which is ironic because the biggest breakthroughs usually come from the least popular opinions). But the very nature of using science is to challenge the status quo, or it should be. Doesn't happen so much these days because of the economic situation of the scientific community that tends to lean more towards a compromised state.

    Last week there was a possum in our backyard. It was bizarrely adorable. I know that they are the only marsupial in North America. But, what I also learned last week was that less than 100 years ago, possums were confined to the states south of the mason-dixon line. But, as the climate has become more favorable for them, they have moved north.
    Likewise, we are seeing malaria carrying mosquitoes becoming adapt at living at higher elevations than they had at the past. Due to climate change, the range of malaria carrying mosquitoes will increase, causing millions more per year to become sick.

Without fear of climate change all these flunkies would lose their jobs so it is obvious they have a vested interest in promoting as much fear as possible. The truth is a lot more boring though. A couple of degrees of change over a couple of hundred years (8 generations) won't cause many problems and we have decades to adapt.
      When you over hype an industry and rely on fear to sustain it people will see through this eventually and the backlash will be severe. It will also lead to general mistrust of all scientific work. These people don't care about that though, they just want to secure their careers in the climate change industry.

    Here are some common logical fallacies:
    1. Ad Hominem: Attacking the person making the argument rather than addressing the argument itself.
    2. Straw Man: Misrepresenting someone's argument to make it easier to attack.
    3. False Dichotomy: Presenting only two options when there are actually more possibilities.
    4. Appeal to Authority: Relying on the opinion of an authority figure rather than providing evidence or logical reasoning.
    5. Circular Reasoning: Using the conclusion of an argument as one of its premises.
    6. Slippery Slope: Claiming that a certain action will lead to a series of increasingly negative consequences without sufficient evidence.
    7. Hasty Generalization: Drawing a broad conclusion based on insufficient or biased evidence.
    8. Appeal to Emotion: Manipulating emotions to sway someone's opinion rather than presenting solid evidence.
    9. False Cause: Assuming that just because two events happen in succession, the first event caused the second event.
    10. Appeal to Ignorance: Asserting that something must be true simply because it has not been proven false, or vice versa.
    Remember, being aware of logical fallacies can help in critical thinking and evaluating arguments.

      Conserve = not changing. We need to change what we are doing now politically in order to respond to the climate crisis. I dont think it matters if young conservatives give green initiatives lip service while still fighting to keep everything else the same or rolling back the clock on certain issues. I find your optimism delusional. We have a system of politicians who are in the pockets of these corporations who are mainly responsible for climate change. They will never create change the change we need to see in our financial culture (the one that destroys the environment in the name of blind greed) because they are being paid to make legislation in the interest of the big corporations. Looking for soft gradual painless change or no change just leads to our deaths as a species. Whatever though. I’m glad young republicans learned to recycle.

    • @IstasPumaNevada
      @IstasPumaNevada 2 роки тому +2

      To be completely fair, hydro power is not feasible everywhere and carries its own rather large ecological consequences (which for already-existing dams is just "well, damage is already done, might as well keep using it now that it's built").
      But yes, vast improvements need to be made. I live in a state that gets a depressing amount of its electricity from coal. Wish we'd switch to nuclear, which kills far far far fewer people per power generated and actually releases less radioactivity into the atmosphere than coal.

    Great admirer…love the humor…suggest including Military perspective on Climate Change - they began writing analyses of climate change threats to our security in the 2000’s. Suggest swapping Military studies with scientific research, just to distance yourself from any taint of the greedy people who go into Science to get rich.
    Incidentally, I am a geologist (NASA), but not a “Scientist” according to Sheldon Cooper.

    • @IstasPumaNevada

      If the military studies are valid, then they are also scientific studies. "the greedy people who go into Science to get rich" is a hilarious phrase; last I heard, struggling for grant money was neither easy nor lucrative. Also if anything, the ones getting paid off are the ones who were paid to _deny_ global warming.
      And I recommend not getting your definition of 'scientist' from lowest-common-denominator sitcom characters. Geology is an awesome science. I live amongst the Belt Supergroup, and a little while ago with my roommate found rocks containing fossilized ripples at around 7,500 feet elevation near a fire watchtower near here.

      There have been 5 global extinction events in the earths history which wiped out life almost entirely and then it took millions of years for the single celled life that survived to evolve to live on land surfaces again. There’s no reason to believe that humans will survive this 6th global extinction event. So you’re right, life will evolve again. It just wont be us.
