This number was cut from 'Ship Ahoy' (1942). 'The Great Morgan' was a grab-bag of items retrieved from the cutting room floor. The short feature, only released overseas, was supposed to be about Frank Morgan- seen for a moment in a cutaway- setting up as a producer (cf 'The Great Ziegfeld').
Ms Deadpan had another comedy number, 'Poor You', in which she follows Sinatra, Tommy's vocalist in '42. But by the time 'The Great Morgan' came out, Rich had gone from Dorsey's to Uncle Sam's service and MGM had let O'Brien go.
What a shame that there is no film of Buddy as a kid playing drums.
Must be the only time anyone thought Buddy was 'as romantic as they come'.
This is the Dorsey lineup that produced 'Hawaiian War Chant' and 'I'll Take Tallulah', with its incredible interplay between Buddy and Eleanor Powell. Guess MGM reckoned that and 'Poor You', with Sinatra and O'Brien vocalizing, was enough value in one movie.

This is a sign of the times. In a humorous, oblique way, a lot of songs in WW2 musicals reflected women's fears of not finding an all-American mate. Some guys would not come back, or would be too hurt in mind or body to be marriageable; others might find wives ('GI brides) among the ladies they liberated, served alongside or even fraternized with amid the conquered enemies.
A serious concern when most women saw their futures as bound up with the ring, the home and kids. In 1940s America few wanted to be 'career girls' and nothing else.
The classic expression of sexual insecurity stands this on its head. In 'Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree' a departing warrior tells his girl to wait for an unknown period 'till I come marching home'. But in reality more men than women wandered and wavered.

I purchased a Rogers Holiday set with Dyansonic snare in 1966 mainly because Buddy played them and his good friend, Ellis Tollin, demo'd them for me at his center city "Music City" in Philadelphia, so I know all about when Rogers drums came into existence. I guess I should have said "just kidding" or something like that.
Lol, I guess "gay" had a different meaning back in those days.
