Would love to hear your thoughts on the UR vs the other robots you have used (Fanuc and others?)

Dan Rudolph, the company I work for has 2 ur10 and we have not been impressed with them. We had to replace a few joints within 2 years of ownership at 7k a piece and 5k to rebuild the joints for the next time, it leaves a bad taste. All the joint seals are starting to fail too. Just not made for an industrial environment. We are wishing we would have gone with Fanuc.

Hey Dan, we've only just commissioned it. Time will tell... Our obvious goal is to keep it healthy and clean. The Ready Robotics cart is nice, we're really hoping we can give this robot to our captains and they own it. The Ready Robotics software that augments the UR's software is pretty cool but is still young (meaning it's a tad buggy). They've dumbed the controls down a lot, so doing things the Fanuc way isn't really possible, but that's the point, right? The control system is intuitive but elementary. Our hope is that our captains can use a template that allows for quick and easy touching up and setup. The Ready Robotics comes with an R-Alignment feature that we've yet to use, but looks promising - the idea is that you create a reference point in your tooling that makes switching setups a cinch. Ready Robotic's software is also compatible with a Fanuc machine, which we almost bought for durability. The UR's are just too expensive for what they are - A collaborative M10 is ~$10k less than a UR10E.

@@funwitharobot You're not making me feel great, man. ;) Hopefully we have better luck! Did you have lots of chips or grease near your joints? Did your robots have the little robot sleeve thing that people sell for URs?

@@ericwhittaker3570 we have not used the sleeve things, that may help keep the coolant gunk off of them. Our UR bots were manufactured in 2016 and we heard from the reseller they had issues with joints on the earlier ones, but they didn't help us out with the replacement joints. Are y'all using a camera to pick material? We are using the robotique camera on the robot to pick and the lens of the camera gets dirty within a day of running causing faults. It's a good setup communicating to the machine tool via Modbus, just would like a bigger payload and more reach in the future.

That's cool you are giving your guys on the floor the ability to take on the robotics. It sounds like there is some give and take on the robot controls with the system y'all bought. Ur does make it easy compared to fanuc controls to program it, but does leave you missing some things that are standard with Fanuc. How are y'all communicating with the machine tool, did you get the fanuc interface card or running discrete I/o? So cool to see progress.

Have you had any issues with the robot 3 years later?

Just seeing this. Yes,. don't do a UR. They're not meant for year over year production at 18 hours/day.... We went with a CRX. See my more recent video of the upgraded system. We had a handful of odd alarms and joint issues. It also got loose - didn't hold position as tight as it used to. Also, the RobotIQ grippers are not great for long production - we went with Schunk, 'cuz they work.

@@ericwhittaker3570 I hear that, the replacement parts on UR bots aren't cheap either. Fanuc all the way.

Congrats on the new gig at Grisely as well. How big of an automation department do you guys have there?
