    This was my 1st RC car as a 10 year old kid. Ran the wheels off it. Eventually forgot about it. Pulled it out of the closet of my parents home in 2020 and refreshed it. I have run it in a few vintage races for fun. What great memories. Thanks for the video!

    Hello I am Wayne from North Alabama in the US. This was my first hobby kit for Christmas that year. My parents could only afford to get me the kit back then but I had acquired everything else to run it. I still have that same car in storage and it's been beat. I waxed my friends in the neighborhood races with it. I raced against the grasshopper 2, Panda Cyclone, etc. You can dial in the Raider to win races and it's a true driver's car. I want Kyosho to re release this one so bad! The car is bulletproof and the only you will break if you race it alot is the dog bones in the rear. Love this car, has a special place in my heart like the original Grasshopper which I have have and drive as well!

      Glenn…the MRP Pro110 that came out around 1986 could be built either rear or mid motor as well.

    Good stuff mate, loved my Raider back in the day.
    Those screws and washers where the receiver goes are just to stop the rubber band on the receiver from slipping off the posts. 👍

      I was thinking that, such an unusual set up. They didn't make alternatives like velcro or double sided tape easy with the raised Kyosho lettering either. The bit I don't really get is the use of the decal strips - are they supposed to go over the rubber band to fix it to the receiver? Very strange!

    • @RCHobbyShed
      @RCHobbyShed Рік тому +2

      @@londonpirates Yeah that's right. The decal strips are there to hold the rubber band central around the receiver.

    Lovely buggy to build from new Glenn and the point about the low gearing is true my old Raider was really good on torque on the beach! The thing was really capable!
    Regarding the receiver mine was held in by an elastic band.
    Those tyres are lush! Love them such a cool design! Glenn what a lovely budget design the Raider is! Totally enjoyed that vid! Thanks for sharing the build! Big fan of the Raider! Cheers James.

    This build really takes me back. I built my Pro in the early 90s and ran it like crazy. I got the "Turbo" package, which came with larger oil filled shocks and a 22x1T Mega Motor. The last time I drove it, it had a 16x2 motor, the small idler and 15T pinion. It was a rocket until the MSC had a meltdown.
    I recently pulled it out of my parents'attic, tore it down, cleaned it up, and got it running again. Not a precision machine by any means, but drives an order of magnitude better than my Hornet. The original tires were hard, but I was able to save them. The shocks were leaky, so I got some gold shocks for it, which are amazing.
    The MSC runs reverse through the first or second speed resistor, not full. Very loud drivetrain on these. The side cover will let you access the pinion and motor screws if you need to tweak it. At one point I ran a wet sump to quiet mine down, but it also slowed it down. The two screws and washers for the radio was to hold the rubber band in place that acted as suspension for the rx. Otherwise it would pop off the top. The shock mounts offer a lot of options. The diff was always notchy on mine. Some Tamiya AWG can help smooth it out and add some drag.

  • @toolbaggers
    @toolbaggers Рік тому +5

    You are supposed to use the decal strips as zip ties to the rubber band which goes around the receiver. The 2 screws and washers are to hold down the rubber band. This whole system is designed to suspend the receiver with it's delicate crystal from vibrations using the rubber band to isolate it from the rest of the chassis.
    A super complicated (and heavy) system which velcro or spongy double sided tape could be substituted BUT the heat from the speed controller resistor could melt the glue on the tape/velcro. The heat wouldn't affect the glue on decal strips as much since they would overlap and provide additional mechanical grip.

    Very cool to see!
    Looking at the manual on the RX bit->it looks to me the mentioned decal parts are there to wrap over a rubber band (35) (R-10) encircling the outside of the RX, then the rubber band (35) (R-10) slips over the two posts and the screws+washers go at the top to stop rubber band from slipping up off the posts. A removable, non velcro attachment.

    Glenn the mid motor was a feature due to the raider using the rocky 4wd gearbox minus the chain to the front. The raider was designed as a cheap entry level kit for the UK and Europe initially I believe

    Love it Glenn. My first RC was a Raider back in 89/90 and my Dad built it back then. I restored it during lockdown and got it working (manual speed controller and all) but it is so fragile I worry about driving it too much on my track.
    I rebuilt one back in 21 and it is amazing! I use it every year, and while with modern electronics it loses some vintage feel, the sound takes me back to the summer of 1990!
    Enjoy it dude but make sure you fire it up and the whine of a Raider is sublime 😎

  • @vintagekyoshorccars-tcmkyo4781

    The easy and quick way to paint the letters on the tyre is to dip the pad of your finger tip into Humbrol white enamel paint, remove the excess paint using a circular motion on some flat waste plastic (not something absorbent), then dab your finger on the tyre letters. Less paint the better, you can always go over it again. It works very well, as long as you keep your finger flat. Remove any overpaint with a cotton bud dipped in white spirit, once the lettering is dry, or scrap off with a hobby knife. Practice on anything with raised bumps first (not your prized vintage rubber). Use thick enamel paint, as thin paint or acrylics will run off the side of the lettering or capillary. You can feel what you are doing with your finger. Yes its not healthy to get paint on your skin, so this advice is at your own risk. Note, the above technique is for tyres with raised lettering, not recessed lettering. For recessed lettering (like on the original Kyosho Optima) dip a wooden tooth pick into thinned Humbrol enamel to pick up a small drop of paint, then dip this into the letter recess and let the capillary action suck the paint into the letter recess for a super neat job. Leave to dry for a few days with the tyre flat.

    I had the same CAR when i was young, painted in metallic blue from Tamiya, i mounted ball bearings, a slightly modified motor and an electronic speed cotrol because that mechanical Speedcontrol get's realy HOT. And well done for opening the DIFF because i can imagine the grease from back in the days would be like concrete, i also mounted the Kyosho option house gold shocks and turnbuckles everywhere and it handeled WAY better then stock. it was a cool looking car and it still looks good, well done GLENN !!!! Hi Glenn
    Looks like a great build. I feel kyosho is definitely growing on you 😁 they do make great cars 👌 look forward to seeing the finished body . With spraying in the winter. Get yourself a hot air gun and just wave it around the body to bake the paint . But don't cook it . Hope that helps . I spray real cars for a living and so this on small repairs 👍

    Pretty cool! The things that jumped out at me to maybe look at were the symmetry of the shock collars (nit-picky I know) and that perhaps there should be a plastic tray that the receiver gets taped to and then screwed onto the top of the gearbox, but it's hard to tell.

    Some silicon spray on those tyres will help preserve them a bit more. Funny I recognise that front tread pattern, I had that same pattern on my kyosho Datsun Stepside (although twice as wide). I love these builds, Kyosho's like these you just don't see. Looking forward to seeing the body finish.
    It's funny that this was Kyosho's basic model, but would have run circles around the Grasshopper, Hornet and Frog etc.

    Another original Raider owner here. Others have explained the rubber band on the RX. Also, did you put the retainers on the front inner suspension shafts? I don't have my manual handy to check but I think you might have missed them...
    I'm tempted to restore/upgrade mine to "Turbo Raider" spec and get a re-re body/decal set (white with orange). If they're the right length I'd go for a set of gold shocks off the Optima Mid as they'd be similar to what the Turbo version came with. Also bearings and maybe adjustable upper tie rods to modernize things. Not sure what else the Turbo spec included other than cosmetics. Maybe set it up with a 21.5T Brushless system. Modern wheels (in orange to match the Turbo decals) and appropriate modern tires. Maybe. I've already got too many other projects as it is.

    Super cool build. But i noticed when u was showing in the book about the Receiver that right under the pic of it has the number 35 in the circle. But right under that it had the words (Rubber Band) is that how the Receiver is supposed to mount by looping a RB around it and pulling it down? It lost me😂😂 which dont take much. But really cool👍

    Waaay too complicated for the original owner. They shelved the car when they couldn't figure out the front from the back arms. They were either a 4 year old that can't tell the difference between basic shapes or they were a super arrogant "I don't need to read the instructions for a toy car" type which quit after thinking "this kit is stupid/broken" because "the parts don't fit."

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc 7 місяців тому

      10 year old not very mechanically inclined kid further jumped up on lots of sweets from the birthday party when they got the car, so even less concentration.
      I dare say most of the kids I knew at that age could have done a similar mistake! So we shouldnt be too harsh.
      All is well that ends well; This eternal bridesmaid of a car got a great video and completed in the end.
