Avid Armor USVX Chamber Vacuum Sealer -- Unboxing, Review & Long Term Food Storage

  • I am always looking for ways to improve my freeze drying and food storage. The AVID ARMOR USVX Chamber Vacuum Sealer is the newest in Avid Armor's Lineup. In this video, I am unboxing, do a review, trying some test runs in the vacuum chamber sealer, talking about the price, specs and comparing to the USV32. This is not a FOODSAVER type vacuum sealer, this is for serious Food Storage only. This is also capable of sealing 5 mil and 7 mil Mylar bags (not an easy task). Whether you are a homesteader, hunter, farmer, prepper, gardener or freeze dryer, if you include this into your food storage prep area, you can package large amounts of food very quickly and with the piece of mind that your food is safe. The first thing I noticed when I tried this, was that there is no room for error. With the air sucked out of the bag, you are left with a deflated looking food bag. If it's no longer deflated and it's puffed back up, your food has been compromised. If you only use an oxygen absorber, sometimes you don't know that your food has a problem until 1 day, 1 month, 1 year or 25 years later or better said, until it's too late.

Thanks for sharing this product with us. (My husband, and our checkbook, are starting to dread UA-cam videos. You'll NEVER guess why.) If we get this, we'll opt for the larger version. We can always downsize bags, but upsizing bags with the smaller model, not so much. Thanks again for the video and the product info.
Looking forward to using the tray portion dividers and the stroganoff recipe. I still say that was a brilliant idea, basically "quit talking and take my money already".
Helpful hint if you're making larger batches of food like I do: I've got a countertop roaster that I use to cook larger quantities of food in. We have the large freeze dryer, and I don't have the capability to stand at the stove for five batches of whatever. Keep an eye out for things like this at thrift stores etc.

Yeah, I got the sense, in researching the Avids (this is all conjecture on my part), that the USV32 came out first, and then after marketing research and feedback from customers, they made a smaller unit to address the space concerns that people had and complaints of no accessory port that even the lowly Foodsaver provides. Then with the USV20 they got feedback that some found the unit to be TOO small. So the USVX was introduced to combine the best of both worlds; keep the accessory port, make it a bit bigger in some ways, and looking more at home in the kitchen with improved consumer styling and simplified controls.

You can put mason jars in this one sideways. They also make a 3 canister seal container kit that doubles as a mason jar seal container or regular seal container. You just hook the attached hose up and seal the jar up. It's about the same price as the mason jar lids when you buy them both. So the containers are more bang for you buck. They sold out of the containers on avid yesterday but Walmart on line had them and I got mine there. I also bought a generic mason jar lid sealer top kit from Amazon. It seems to work just fine since the Magic sealer ones are also out of stock.

Hello Brian, did you ever consider the JVR Vac100? I've been looking closely at the Avid Armor units, and the cost of Avid is definitely attractive. Their marketing team has definitely done their research as to what people are looking for at home. But from what I've read, if anything goes out on the Avids other than the maybe the sealing wire, parts are not user serviceable--it's basically back to buy another one. That's what I'm thinking in paying a bit more for the JVR Vac100, more of a buy it once rather than some years down the road buying it again (I've already gone through two Foodsavers and want to stop replacing vac sealers).

Just a follow-up, kind of replying to myself here ;) But I did get the JVR Vac100 and I am LOVING it. Wow, is it extremely well made, it is quiet, and the company is very responsive and they take all the time you need to make sure you have your question(s) answered. And I love that you can pop three screws out on the back cover and raise the hood like you do on your car, and can replace any part in it that might wear out. The Vac100 is meant to be serviceable for the long term. Also, they do have a discount if they happen to have a unit that has a small cosmetic defect. I was able to get one of those units. And when I say "small", I mean you really can not see the defect without very close inspection, and even then you have to ask yourself if that could be the defect. Those units are dependent on whether they have any that somehow got scratch on them here or there. My only problem with the Vac100 has actually been that it puts such a good vacuum on the bag, that 3mil bags, for many things, are not thick enough. I vacuum sealed several grains and beans, and the vacuum is so powerful that any tiny pointed grain that is oriented in the wrong direction will eventually poke through the bag. I discussed with Andrew, who was very knowledgable and helpful, and he agreed with my guess on what was happening and explained to me about the pressure that the bag has to withstand, and suggested for a) grains or other items that might have a sharp edge and/or b) items that might be handled a lot, such as the grains that I sealed and put into plastic totes, which might rub against each other in handling, would need at least a 4mil bag and maybe even a 5mil. But Andrew pointed out that even at the extra cost of a 4-5mil bag, it is still significantly cheaper than mylar. So I tried some of the 4mil bags that came with the samples that were included, and I have yet to lose a seal on any of those, so I think 4mil bags are going to be my go-to for those bigger quantities that will be stored in totes. JVR had an option on their website to select bags that you want to try out and they will send you some free samples, so I have a few 4mil bags on the way to try out the biggest size (12'x14") that reliably will fit in the Vac100.

@@jcjewell I really enjoy the Vac100 and glad I made the investment. Every seal so far has been perfect. The machine screams quality. It is very well built and very quiet during operation. Had to call them with a question and the customer service was fantastic. Glad you like yours also! :)

You can use your FD as a vacuum source for sealing your canning jars but its more convenient to use a tube and jar cap to vacuum seal them individually. I have tubes on my WeVac chamber sealer and on my old school Food Saver and i have one for wide and small mouth jars.
Just remember that Vacuum sealing jars is NOT a substitute for canning. It is only for vacuum sealing dry goods. You can re-use lids in vacuum sealing and get variable lengths of time the jars hold the vacuum. I tend to use them short term in the kitchen sealing over and over daily but i also have a stack of cases of 1/2 gallon Ball Jars of wheat berries I'm looking at with a seal daye in 2015 and all seals are still holding.

I don't think you have to. We have a different brand of chamber vac, and have been sealing mylar bags with it for about a year. Year. I think the only place an oxygen absorber would help is if there were a small puncture in the bag. I'd estimate. We've sealed 2,000 bags without oxygen absorbers in our chamber vac with no issues.

    • @Jarvis30
      @Jarvis30 2 роки тому +1

My chamber vac is so powerful i don't use O² absorbers. Only had my chamber vac for about 6 months but brobles with stale food yet.
I took into account the cheaper bags and no O² absorbers when considering the higher price of a chamber vac compared to another system like Food Saver. I'm not always sealing for 25 years so I'm usually using chamber vac bags, AND.... with a chamber Vac you can seal/reseal about any plastic bag. You will learn how different plastics actually pass air under vacuum, not through the seal, but through the surface of the bag. Mylar is the best and it goes down from there. You get what you pay for.

I may be able to speak to this question, as we are a family of 9 and have worn out two Foodsavers such as the one you describe. Loved the things we did with our Foodsavers, especially with the canning jar sealing accessory that you mentioned. But they didn't last. Also, the advantage of a chamber sealer, to me, is the ability to use much (I mean as much as 1/10th the cost) cheaper bags. The special channel bags required in the Foodsaver and similar designed sealers will eventually cost you more than just getting a chamber sealer up front.

There are multiple reasons. You have to remove your shelves to put jars in the FD. Your FD probably isn't in your kitchen and i use vac sealed 1/2 gallon Ball jars for everything. I have been using a Food Saver canning jar sealer for 20 years on my kitchen counter and its handy and right there and faster than using the FD. Its literally 15 seconds each and much simpler when you open a jar for some FD onions and seal it right back up. The Food Saver has an automatic pressure setting but the chamber vac is way more powerful but takes up more space on the counter. The tube is just more convenient.

    • @live.life.simple.

USV32 (the oldest): No USV20: Yes; USVX (the newest): Yes; -- That is, the USV20/USVX have accessory ports. I don't recall if they come with the required accessory to actually do the vacuum sealing of canning jars.

Actually I pay for them. I don't promote junk. I promote the things I actually use. That makes it easy to share them on this channel. That's also why I only promote a handful of products.
