I visited Gethsemani the late 80's. We walked all around the place. All I remember is Fr. Louis's cross. Thomas Merton. I hugged it and kissed it. It made me feel close to him, and to all of the monks. That is my only memory of Gethemani. It is a good one. They pray for us, and for the whole world. Heaven knows, we need it.
The Abbey of Gethsemani is a holy place with all the connection to God. I am so glad that i got to experience this most joyous and mysterious place. Br Conrad, Br Luke, and Br Aaron, and to all the rest, Thank you all!
Br. Simeon. He drove me to the airport in a horrific darkened thunderstorm in sheets of pouring rain and did so with frightful ease. His very presence and bearing, the manner in which he spoke, conveyed a wisdom grounded in humility that can only be envied. Simeon is what we call "the real deal." A good and holy man. The kind of guy you walk away from with an experience that in turn makes you better off for having met him. A real Trappist.
Thank you ... About 2 years ago I took a road trip with my son. Rented a room at the Hampton Inn in Bardstown.... I drove slowly the first morning taking my time to get to the abby. Once there I didn’t want to leave. I returned the next morning alone... located Thomas Merton’s humble grave. I came to know of the abbey when studying Merton’s work ... peaceful.... Didn’t want to leave....
Great job Brother Simeon, you've barely aged. Brother Gerlac told me about this and I am so thankful to view it. Brother Sean (1959 to 1965) Jack O'Handley M.D.
Your hospitality towards me the two times I was there is quite a great memory. I miss The Abbey of our Lady of Gethsemani. God bless you Br. Simeon, and all those serving at The Abbey.
Thanks be to God for all things but especially for my experience as a monk at Gethsemani. It was one one of the highlights of my life and had a profound effect on the rest of my life. Dom James Fox, the Abbot in 1956, was one of the most impressive people I ever met. May Dom James and all my spiritual fathers who were then at Gethsemani through the mercy of God rest in peace.
I love hearing stories of Gethsemani Abbey where I retreat each year. Perhaps you could write your memoirs or even better....share with the retreatants! I so enjoyed Brother Paul's book " the monks could share stories with retreatants? I love Brother Paul's book "In praise of the Useless Life."
+Gina M Susana Thanks for the comment. Yes, that's the intent at some point. We do have a few more interviews with some of the senior monks. I may put them together at some point, "Gethsemani Remembers." Or I may incorporate them into a longer video about the history of the monastery. Lots of possibilities.
Thank you for sharing your memories, Br Simeon. I happen to own a beautiful brown vase I purchased many years ago in Louisville that came from the Abbey and is signed "Simeon". It would be wonderful to know if this kind monk is the same artist who created the vase I love so much!
Love the Trappist "Te Deum." Whoever are singing it in this video, have done an outstanding job. The phrasing, along with the melody and pacing , IMO, is perfect. I understand that eating was done, at lunch, while a monk read a book to everyone. I've one major critical remark. Perhaps I missed it but throughout this man's talk, he did not once mention the Holy Name of Jesus, God Almighty, the All-encompassing Love of a monk.

what would his mentioning of the name of Jesus do for you?
