Hi Andrew. Great review. Please could we get some Arcam, Naim, Dali, NAD, KEF, Linn, Audio Research, Dan D'agostino, Tannoy and PSB, and reviews. Starting to feel a little like you're stuck on just a few brands. Would love to hear your review of, for example, the Tannoy Prestige Westminster or the Arcam AVR41 etc.
@@Jprjason123 If you aren't seeing a brand represented, it's very likely NOT due to a lack of effort on our part. If there is something you want to see on the channel, we recommend you reach out to those brands and let your voice be heard.
Like Martin Logan with AMT tweeters, I bought thin-film AMT ribbon tweeter speaker GoldenEar BRX and I love them so much that I bought a 3rd one as the center speaker for the home theater for matching LCR. source=Apple Music lossless
I purchased the F200 and put them as my mains, moving my current XT60's to the rears. I thought the XT 60's were really good but the 200's are amazingly good. Like your channel and the reviews you give. Great job.
Kristi, I loved it when you also answered your own comparison questions that you posed to Andrew. You did this so awesomely during last week's Klipsch RP-8000F IIs video too. I'm not sure you always have an opinion ready for your own questions to Andrew, but I love it when you include your opinion too! Thanks again for another amazing video! Have a great Sunday you two!!!
Thanks! I would love to see you review the Goldenear BRX or the Buchart S4 or S500, in general, but also because I feel these would be great compared to the MLs .
Based on the F100 review on this channel, I felt the B100 bookshelves and C100 center were worth my time to audition as upgrades to my Polk LSiM 703 and 704c LCR setup (already have subs for each of the LCR), particularly as I always felt the Polks were lacking in detail and imaging compared to my Focal Elex headphone setup. After auditioning them yesterday, I ordered on the spot. Clear step-up from my existing Polks in detail and the imaging elicited an audible "wow" from me. Staging also felt more open, and goodness did electric guitars sound good (highly recommend listening to Tool's "The Pot" on this line). I was NOT expecting them to be as good as they were. While not cheap, for what they are they feel like a bargain (I was expecting to have to shell out a lot more for this clear of a performance jump). Went with the gloss black finish (pictures do not do it justice...went in thinking I would like walnut the most, but the gloss black was super impressive in person). Big thanks to Andrew and Kristi for putting this series on my radar!!!
That's tall praise. The polk lsim is a damn good line. I have the lsim707 and have been hunting the 703s. Now you got questioning if I need to audition the martin logans.
@charlesking4843 Well worth an audition, especially if you find yourself wanting in the same areas I did with the Polks (and desire/are fine with a more forward presentation). Excited to see how the Martin Logans do in my space once they arrive, particularly at lower volumes (have found I need to turn up the volume on the Polks for them to come alive, which is not the best in an apartment...)
Nice pick on the B100 Bookies. I had the Polk LSi15 LR and LSiC for a good 17 years. ...when it came time to upgrade my system, I ended up scrapping Polk, and went with Revel. Yes, I chose bookshelf M16 + REL HT1003 over my Polk LSi series. Polk can be a gateway drug into hi-fi, but there are SO many other speakers makers out there that deserve people's attention.
@lawpenner Definitely better than the Polks were (at all volumes). Admittedly the LSiM 703s were easier to dial in to the subs (B100 still an excellent speaker without, but a sub really helps fill it out). Those 703s are BIG and have more authority on the low frequencies (and are pretty flat before roll off), although the MLs have the clear edge in bass speed and texture. Midrange up the MLs just win. Details are easier to make out and the soundstage and imaging are out of this world. Dialogue from the C100 center channel also noticeable inprovement over the LSiM 704c. I have zero hesitation recommending these.
It just occurred to me that one of the reasons I enjoy this channel is that aside from the educational and entertainment value is that even though I will never be able to afford to explore the vast world of this hobby you bring your knowledge and affability to (I'm assuming) many of us who just like to dream. Growing up in NY in the 70s this was a snobbish environment that had no patience for plebeians like me. In my retirement years, your channel feels like home.
what a great channel and a refreshing, optimistic but not shilling tone of reviews you guys run. i just feel thoroughly interested and informed and not cattleprodded into "gotta have this" territory. i'm pretty new to hifi and your voice is what a community of hobbyists needs. these video's dont give me buyers anxiety, but actually make me see the fun in it all
Thanks for this review guys. I was one of the people who asked for it in the comments of the other MartinLogan video. I have my pair coming in two days!
I am looking forward to listening to the XT B100s. I have heard the B10s. And they rock. No joke for $1200 a pair, they give the Bowers and Wilkens 704 S3s a run for the money. Martin Logan is just such an amazing speaker company. I do prefer the electro statics though.
Thank you! Thank you! For answering my question and helping my decision! I have the Motion 35XTi bookshelf’s and was about to buy a Rel T7X to round off what I thought was lacking on the lower mids and bass. Now I am going for the F100’s and selling my 35xti. The fact that the port is under the speaker and the fact that I don’t need a sub makes this my endgame speaker. I love my 35xti’s but always thought It could just better. The Sub I had just didn’t match well, the sounded better ok their own. So to fork out $4,500.00 and enjoy.
Great review, as usual. I especially appreciated Kristi's prompts at the end for the extended comparisons. I noticed the color balance seemed a little cooler this time - Andrew's skin tones erred towards the blue. Was that deliberate - or just using more daylight?
Martin Logan has always been in a league of their own! Even if other stuff sounds better, ML has always had a particular luxurious sound and feel to them. Amazing brand!
Love your reviews! I would love them even more if you added a tiny detail: how wide is the speakers’ (these and all the others you review going forward) “sweet spot?” In “real world” conditions this is one of the most critical details because frankly, music and movies are better enjoyed with a friend or family member or 3 at your side. Can we all enjoy pin point imaging and a wide soundstage, or will that be a luxury for a single person with their “head in a vice?” Nobody mentions this in their reviews, and since you two are a pair you are in a prime position to test this information. Please try to mention it in the future!
Hey guys, Why no comparison with the ls50 metas when reviewing bookshelf speakers even though they were speaker of the year a while back? Btw, bought my son a node and crown amp for his first setup in his new/first house per your suggestion. Thanks!
I listened to about all of them in this price range. I went with the Focal Aira 906. The bass they have, while not super low, is quick and tight. They image well, and the mids are sweet. HIghs are plenty clear while being non fatiguing.
Love the video! And I want to add that having Kristy as part of this channel is what makes your videos stand out from the other audio review channels on UA-cam.
I was thinking of grabbing a pair of M-L Electromotion ESL or ESL-X, but have put the brakes on till I hear the Motion F-100 and F-200 models. Thank you, Kristi and Andrew, for the recent reviews on the new M-L Motion models! 😉👍
I currently own the ML Motion 40 speakers (original version) and absolutely love them. They can get a tad harsh if I am not careful but the detail is amazing. Shopping for new speakers, I cannot find anything that is comparable until I get to the $10k range, detail wise.Lots of speakers that are close but if you factor in the fact I would have to buy the new speakers, they are just not worth the money for a slight or no upgrade in sound. I think I just really like the ribbon tweeter over a dome. These new MLs are very interesting and have me considering upgrading to them. I would get the F100 or the F200 depending on how each sounds when I audition them.
@Barefoot For a long time I had the Schiit Vidar (still have it).. but recently switched to the Benchmark AH2B or whatever the model number is. Both sound fantastic on the Motion 40 speakers.
Wow, what an exceptionally articulated review! I got what I needed from this, and given that my use will be for home theater AND two-channel, and you need a subwoofer for home theater regardless, the B100’s will be my choice. Well done, and thank you!
Thank you for another great review and checking out the B100 in addition to the towers! Could be a good option for those looking to upgrade their bookshelves!
Really enjoyed the review and thanks Kristi for bringing up the speaker comparisons. I've had the ML XT B100's for almost a week now and they sound great with the Crown XLS 2502 amp, Denon AVR-X3600H receiver and a PSA 15" sealed subwoofer. I don't really believe in speaker break-in, but they did sound somewhat disappointing at first listen where drums had no impact and the overall sound to me was subdued. After around 12 hours - 15 hours, the sound appears to have settled in??? as I'm really enjoying them now. Note that the manual states 72 hours of break-in at 90dB before any critical listening. They are replacing a pair of B&W 705 S2's which will go in another room. Thanks again for the review.
Some speakers absolutely have break-in. I have had multiple pairs of the same speakers and observed a change in sound from new to broken-in. The typical trend is that they sound 'tight' at first. They develop more bass over time and typically smoother highs. Soundstage depth increases as well. Not all speakers break-in though. This is coming from a guy who has had more than 40 speakers in my house this year. Not as many as Andrew and Krisi, but I'm working on it!
We've all heard debate whether break-in is real or not but I routinely see shipped with high-end audio products that are designed and manufactured by the industry's best, break-in in the official owner instructions. I've listened to Paul at PS Audio explain the different mechanical parts, drivers, even capacitors... how they break in Looks like you just experienced breakin for yourself. Thanks for sharing this real world experience
Good to hear someone else found breaking in to be beneficial. I found the same thing with the older Motion 15i’s and 60xti’s. I told my youngest (and he agreed) “Is it me, or do these speakers sound better?”. They seemed a little harsh at first, but after several hours of listening, they do sound better. I will be getting in the Polk R700’s within a couple days and can’t wait to compare!
I’d pick the F100 tower…I think I’ve reached my end game bookshelf with the KEF R3 …and with the new R3 Meta’s coming out, I’m hoping there is a review on the horizon :) Thanks again Andrew and Kristi for a great review!!
If I'm going to add a good subwoofer anyways tower or bookshelf, is the tower a waste? Or will I get even better bass? Just in the sweet spot not for multiple people.
BRAVO!!! Thank you so much for covering the placement to the wall with so much detail. Such a great help for so many of us! Also, I’m totally getting the bookshelf and dual subs. This gives much more control over sound when distance from the wall is limited
Thank you for your excellent work. Regarding speech intelligibility in movies: Kristi's comment that the F100 was superior in this regard to the B100 was surprising. My wife and I both ask the dreaded "what did she say?" question, and a major incentive to upgrade is to improve intelligibility. For movies, I assume that the same XTC100 center was used. Since almost all movie dialogue is directed to the center channel, it is hard to understand why different L and R speakers would make a meaningful difference. A few possibilities present themselves: 1) Was the center speaker moved or changed in any way? 2) Did you try plugging the B100 ports to improve intelligibility? 3) Was the sub or subs specifically integrated to the B100? 4) Did you experiment with the crossover settings to improve intelligibility? In our small/medium room, 13x17x8, I suspect the B100 with our two excellent subs would be as good or perhaps better than the F100 and for a third the price. I know that you have addressed the floorstander/bookshelf issue before, and are very familiar with this issue. You may want to expand on this with regard to the B100. Thanks again to you both for your informative and entertaining videos.
I am thinking of getting Paradigm Founder 100F, 80F, or 40B pairs. Funny think is Paradigm and MartinLogan and Anthem are all owned and controlled by the Scott Bagby and his son John. One thing they have in common is both Founder series and the new Martin Logan's are both beautiful in different ways--and both series have NO VISIBLE SCREWS. I like that a lot. Robinsons: Are you going to review the Paradigm Founder Series speakers ?
Thanks for pointing out speakers better for low-level listening. I live in an apartment, so cranking it up just isn't an option. Also, I really don't enjoy listening to things at a really loud volume the way I did when I was younger.
I have a mix of the prior 2 generations of Martin Logan Motion bookshelfs. The Motion 15s, Motion 30 center, Motion LX16s top heights, Motion 2i as surrounds. Absolutely love how the Motions are so lively and bright without being fatiguing. I find that I can enjoy music at much lower audio levels than before when I had ELAC front stage. Don’t need to push the motions too hard for them to sound great and give long pleasant listening session. Mine are pairs with an SVS 1000 (non ported). With amplification they sound even better but I enjoyed them for 2 years with no amp just fine. I now have an Outlaw 5000x driving my entire front stage.
@@ivanfilatov7913 I use 8 806's for surround/height duties in my HT. I thought I was half nuts when I purchased them but they made an amazing difference over the Emotiva's I had in there previously.
@@bearclaw5115 I'm thinking about doing the same thing...buying a number of these Focal 806's. Did you purchase them at the current price of $299 each? Any downside to these speakers? Is the Tweeter too harsh or simblant at all? I'm a bit weary of aluminum don't tweeters. You tell me And what do you say about the common complaint that these are a bit lacking in the bass?
35 years ago I found a pair of Martin Logan bookshelf speakers at a yard sale. It was at that point my hifi journey began. The company has a special place in my heart. I had an el cheapo Sears branded stack, they were so much better than the speakers than came with the set. Joy to my ears. I don't know how old they were when I got them lasted me 15 years or so in one room or another.
Also, you are dead right about the Focal 806s being a crazy deal at under $600. Compared to my similarly priced Kef q350s the Focal do everything (that’s important to me) better. It was a significant upgrade, and I’ve not heard better for less than twice the price.
Focal 806s. They’ve been on sale at that price since this summer. I bought some. They are bright and need warmer amp pairing or EQ. They have terrific imagining, especially at lowish volume. I am using with sub to help them flesh out midrange. They are very handsome and in my case girlfriend-approved.
I have two MartinLogan Dynamo 1100x and I am happy to say they are amazing. I highly recommend people consider them because the room correction is worth it alone
Like Martin Logan with AMT tweeters, I bought thin-film AMT ribbon tweeter speaker GoldenEar BRX and I love them so much that I bought a 3rd one as the center speaker for the home theater for matching LCR. source=Apple Music lossless
Hello. This is my first time writing. I really like your review format as a couple. I know you have mentioned that these ML hint at the performance of Focal (which I have an older pair of Cobalts 806). Would these (MLs)compare to the higher Focals speakers you have reviewed. Thank you. Again really love your format as a couple,
Once again, this ML line in this particular finish, is so classy looking. The only current speaker line that i prefer visually is that JBL SDI line in the grey wood finish. Lack of deep bass aside, i would love to hear these. Looks alone? Total breakaway slam dunk. Cheers!
My understanding is that midwoofer cabinet is sealed in the F100 vs the ported B100. I'm willing to bet that is why Kristi thought the dialogue intelligibility was better with the towers. I'm still hoping you'll compare the C100 to the B100. Thanks!
Also with everything below 280hz getting filtered out of the mids on the F100's if allows the mid to do it's job and not be stressed trying to reproduce bass frequencies.
B100. It would better suit my room and needs. Excellent dispersion traits are a big plus. I have neighbours to consider plus I am not a boom boom head. Articulation and detail over thud thud, easily. They really do look very fine. Oh , I currently run a pair of Elac Uni-fi 2.0. Upgrade possibility here. Amplifier, no problem. Andrew, anyone help here ? Thanks guys, good reviews Andrew and Kristi. This tag team approach works very well.
I might demo these just based on the tweeter design, but I would love to see spinorama data.I have a finicky room and seeing how speakers perform on and off axis really help in finding compatibility for my room and setup.
@@umrryan You could, but I don't think I would advise it. You'd be better off in terms of tone going with another set of RP speakers instead. These would be overkill maybe for surrounds. MartinLogan makes a Motion aimed at being surrounds. You can see it here: bit.ly/3E1MDt1
Focal came up with Vestia line to replace the Chora line. I test listened that and the new Vestia was very good. And much better looking than Chora. And I love my Chora speakers.
The Vestia's are definitely made nicer. I actually like the look of the Chora's better though. What did you think of the Vestia's sound quality over the Chora's?
@@bearclaw5115 the noca was a bit more "open" as they say. Less dense than with Chora. The vocal is punctual, crystal clear and you find the singer at the center of the stage as usual. If I would make yt videos about hifi gears I would use the words: more refined, a bit wider soundstage, less dense bit not too airy. Vocals are Focal level clear :) but really. And it was pleased to hear it in a room with 4.5 meter height and 22-24 square meter... and it was still there.... the sound and the presence. I would buy it over Chora for their ORIGINAL price. However this actual 40% discount... than I would add a little more and buy an Aria 906... however I expect that someting will replace Aria as well. I wait for that. In the meantime I was thinking about trying out Mojo 2 from Ophidian or PCM twenty5.21.
I have a smallish listening/viewing space (12Dx14W) and I sit about 8' from the front speaker plane, so I'd go with the bookies + sub (maybe two). Now I'm curious to find out what you think about these compared to the Revel M16. ;-) Also - let's get on with that Anthem MRX review. I have decisions to make. LOL
Kristi, we only need comparisons to EVERY speaker since the beginning of the channel! For myself, totally interested in the towers. My 12 year old is suddenly into vinyl. Building a system for him I’m leaning towards the Lumina II’s after this review since bass without a sub maybe better with those. And a bit cheaper.
Her name is Kristi. Also your 12yr old is very lucky! Your kid may be better off with the Polk R200's though as kids are more sensitive to highs than us adults.
Great Video I recently added a SX780 (cause I wanted one) that is set up for two channel. I have A speakers connected to SVS Pinnacle towers (part of my 7.2.4 HT setup), B is connected to two old Infinity Beta 20's I had laying around. Would like to replace them with bookshelves in the $700-$1500 for the pair. 90+% of listening is via SONOS Port music is generally smooth to vocal Jazz. No Subwoofer in play. Would the B100's be too hard to drive (and lack enough bass)? Had focused on Wharfedale Diamond 12.2, but wondering is I'm aiming too low.
Your amp needs to be able to handle 4 ohm loads for the B100s to sound their best. If your current setup can't swing that, you may be better off here bit.ly/3wvqfnh.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews thanks... was concerned that the SX780 45W might have an issue at 4 Ohms. I usually try to stay with 8 ohm speakers... The Klipsch over the Polk R200?
I went to Best Buy's listening room, as it's the only spot to test equipment in my town. They had these B100s. I loved them paired with the REL - T/7X. I nearly bought on the spot. My buddy is pushing me to get the Klipsch RP 600 ii. Best Buy didn't have them out, though, so I am struggling to decide whether the B100 is worth nearly twice as much as the RP 600ii speakers. Hmmm. Hmmm.
I know it's subjective but although I would normally choose the dark wood version I'm not a fan of the copper(?) ring and that makes it a no-go for me personally. If I pull the trigger on the B100's it would have to be in that gorgeous high gloss black finish which looks bad-a$$ with the woven carbon fiber woofer.....but that's me :)
Question: Back in 79 I bought a pair of ESS AMT 3b Studio Monitor Towers, very expensive. They had the Hiel Air Motion Transformer, two 12 inch woofers/one active and one passive and were flat down to 30 Hz. Loved them. Now a days many experts say that as Subwoofer is better for sound. Wondering why is this so? A mention, back on 79 they had a sticker price pf $2,500/pr. CAN I will need to get our official to see what the sticker for these days - no doubt scary. I just don't get the Sub thing. Thanks - Today, haha $10,100.00. Can't afford that these days🤣
Subwoofer(s) can be placed where bass boost, frequency response, boundary issues and room nodes across a wide range of bass tones can be optimized. Tower speakers have to be where stereo is best served (for the best imaging, center effect, mid-blend, etc) - which is the approximate same for bookshelf and wide range satellite speakers… and that can be good for bass (or not) and can get some nodes (room modes) to blend but not all; unless the gods smile on you above all others. My fave so far is a pair of towers, and a pair of subwoofers at the other end of the room - this equates to a satellite/sub system with 4 subs in Harmon 4-sub optimized locations… 1/4, 1/4, 1/4, 1/4 (more or less from the four corners)
ESS was selling a Limited Edition of their AMT 1 (a, b, c?) with the full size Heil Driver and a 12" woofer/passive radiator combo for $4500 USD. They are all sold out now. If your system goes down to 30 HZ. you don't need a subwoofer for music. Many sub woofers don't go down that low. If you use them in a home theater set up then you will need to add a sub for, explosions and sound effects. Full Disclosure: I own a pair of ESS RMII speakers. I love them for their clarity imaging and slam, they go down to 35hz.
I think a pair of full range towers is best for music. A sub really helps out in home theater but can be difficult for the average person to integrate with the towers for precise music playback.
@@bearclaw5115 - I haven’t felt above average, but I have been the guy to fix my friends’ systems since back in college… but in reality, what gives me a lot of help in setting up a good system with multi-subs, towers, electrostats, and all is a spouse that doesn’t mind my experiments - as long as she gets to hear her favorite music and movies
13:06 - Andrew, I'd be curious to hear what you think about speakers. Reference speakers. (They sell soft dome speakers, but their Reference models with an "R" in the model numbers all have AMT Tweeters.)
Finally a video to make me smile and dream because I can't upgrade before I move to another country...I'd choose the towers of course, mostly if they're that good to keep them for ten years or more. Have a great day!
I am considering upgrading my 2019 ML Motion 40s. And, no, I'm not going to ask you how my older Motions compare to the new ones. ;-) I'm looking at either the new ML Motion XT B100 or KEF R3 Meta. Up until your review of the KEF R11 Meta, I was team ML. I don't have the space for the R11s so I'm considering the R3s instead. My receiver is a Marantz SR6015. As you know, both the MLs and KEF are 4 ohm speakers. According to the specs of the Marantz it is an 8 ohm receiver (Power Output (8 ohm, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.08% 2ch Drive) 110 W). My question is do you think my Marantz will have enough juice to properly drive either the MLs or the KEFs? I would really appreciate your thoughts. I love your channel and value your opinions. Thank you both!!! PS would you consider having a review on the KEF R3s?
I'm looking into upgrading the bookshelves in my office and these are at the top of my list to demo. Also curious to listen to the mini Maggie system from Magnepan. I love the sound of panel speakers, and it sounds like the B100s may have a little bit of that magic to them.
If money was no object, i would definitely go with the towers. Performance, sure, but the styling is so gorgeous, i want the larger option. These things would make even my relatively un-decorated and blue collar bachelor pad appear posh
I'd get the F200's with 8" woofers!! Yes, I'm prejudiced against small woofers, as I've not yet met a small woofer that doesn't sound like it's struggling. I've had dual 7's and dual 8's, and neither has satisfied me as much as a single 10, 12, or 15 inch woofer.
May I add? I am very pleased to see Martin Logan offering some new and rather impressive dynamic speakers according to your review Andrew. I was very happy to see you making note on ML's OWN subwoofers. I have the Classic 9's electrostatics AND paired with a Dynamo 1600x. The Anthem room correction and the remote app. is one of a kind for subwoofer control! I would highly recommend keeping a 2.1 channel system all from the same company. You get synergy !😊
Great review Andrew and Kristi as always! These speakers sound interesting to me, I'm a Focal fan. I love bright, detailed, forward, wide and huge soundstage! So I'd never look at or even consider Polk. I've been waiting for your review on Technics speakers...... Is that coming or not? I'm really curious about them! I love the Technics SU-G700M2 integrated amp pairing with Focal Chora 806 speakers and subwoofer!
To answer your question…. If you have an impending separation or divorce coming your way, I would get the bookshelf speakers… if your gonna move & can’t wait, get the bookshelf speakers. If your gonna stay put, towers every day. They are more room filling & therefore more satisfying. But no matter what, I think you would always benefit from having a sub or two in your system. Thanks for the work you do!
I've always had towers, so the F100s would be my choice. I recently upgraded to 4 ohm - 3 way speakers that required an upgraded Anthem amp but love them.
Maybe the bass is getting mixed with the mids because the speaker is trying to produce both sounds. Just my thought on the bookshelf clarity. Either way this sounds like an amazing bookshelf.
I heard the Focal 806 vs. the Klipsch RP600MIIs live in a stereo place. The Klipsch were on sale for $450, they blew the Focals away. I like Martin Logan speakers, but for value, it's still the Klipsch RP600MIIs for me personally... I would like to see you test Emotiva's latest offerings in testing or a review.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Hearing speakers first makes all the difference to me. I really enjoy how you review speakers. I am in the market to upgrade my roughly 30-34 year old ADS M12/90s, which according to the inflation calculator would now cost +/- $6k! Choosing will be most difficult. Thanks again for replying and all the work that you do!
Hey Andrew thanks for the awesome review of the Martin Logan B100 I did have the older model but like you said you would up grade for look’s alone I managed to pick up a pair of open box for $1200 awesome speaker compared to the older model Now here’s my question can I get away with using a different manufacturer for side surround like the Emotiva A+2 surround I already have the A1 for heights they do have any tweeter as well . I’m asking because marring logan can be very expensive . Thanks for the feed back Percival
A question about comparisons. I hear you asking whether a speaker is 2 or 3 times better than another for comparison. When do you think the law of diminishing returns comes in? Is it not within the price ranges you are showing or do you not take it into account?
Would definitely get the B100s for the option to tweak the base response for home theater. Would likely get better performance with 2 RSL Speedwoofer 10s MkII's paired with the B100s, both running at 400w rms and hitting super fast and tight (matching characteristics of the ML towers) for only $1k for the pair. 2 ML towers = $4500; 2 B100 bookshelves & 2 speedwoofers = $2600 ;)
I think your plan works if you are only concerned with home theater applications. I own the original Speedwoofer and despite the name, it's tough to get a tight enough integration for music playback. The precision of the bass is going to be much higher with the F100/F200 towers on there own. And if you don't care about precision why even spend this kind of money anyway? If you just want the biggest sound for the money, go with a pair of Emotiva tower speakers.
No. If you want speed, you want sealed subs, not subs with ports. Sealed subs are for music while ported subs are for electronic music and movies. I would recommend the Rythmik L12, or REL HT1205
@@bearclaw5115 So I don't care about precision bc I'm going to use the latest speedwoofers which are not precise, and therefore I shouldn't spend money on these bc the only reason to get these are for their precision?... 😂
@@ottoinct In a larger rooms, you can go for larger subs 9/10 times, you don't have to use ported. Rythmik has up to 18 inch sealed subs which would be more than enough for almost any kind of space. But yeah if your room is extremely large for some reason, like 50 ft by 50ft, then yeah, I would go with ported as it will move more air and give louder volume at lower frequencies.
Loved your review. Always on the quest for better sound. As another poster mentioned, would love to see you review JTR Speakers, as that is what I own. My Brother thinks I will be hard pressed to find better, yet I am wondering it the Q Acoustics or ML F100 Towers will be better than my JTRs. I also worry every time I hear about how you pair amplifiers to speakers wondering if I have it righty. I am driving my speakers with an Emotiva XPA-5 and Antherm AVM70.
You're amps are fine for those speakers. You needn't worry. As for any reviews of JTR, it's not a brand that we are currently seeking samples to review. That said, I wouldn't second guess your choices. Enjoy what you have.
You should get a hold of one of Acoustic Energy's flagships. I've reached out to convince them to sell as singles for people who want a center speaker from the AE500's.
I may have done poorly, but I could not afford the new line, so I bought 2 40i towers to go with my motion 30 center and am very happy considering the closeout deal I got. I had 2 motion 15's before getting the towers.
I have the original motion 40 towers and absolutely love them. Nothing beats them until you get to the $10k price point, though lots of things match or come close. I have not heard the current Motion XT line an am hopeful this is finally the upgrade I have been wanting.
Which speaker would you choose between the Lumina 2 and the XTB100 for desktop and near field. I wish you comment on near field listening when reviewing bookshelves. Love your show. Thanks.
Probably the Lumina 2's. I think their size is better suited for desktop. Though if it were me, I'd go with something even less expensive like this bit.ly/YUdesk. The reason I don't cover near field listening is because I don't listen in the near field. If I need audio at my desk, I use headphones.
Hi! I have been enjoying the ls 50 metas these couple of years. I am impressed with their details and imaging. They are paired with parasound a21+, rogue rp1 preamp, denafrips ares2 and rel t5x. Are these martin logans a level upgrade from the ls 50 metas? Thanks .
For the first time in 30 years I'm in the market for new speakers, my choice would probably be for the XT F100 towers. Currently I've got a pair of ADS L710's from the mid 70's, and a pair of JBL L100T's from the late 80's. Both were well regarded in their time, and to my ears still sound pretty good today. My question is how much progress has been made in speakers since that time? Should I expect a night & day difference with new sperakers, or will the improvement be more modest? I'm just wondering how good gear from the past holds up vs. today's equipment. Thanks!
My very first speakers i bought in 1965 were a pair of Goodmans Axiom 201 12 inch paper cone full range 15 ohm 15 watt drivers. They were built like a tank. Heavy die-cast frames. huge magnets. I had to build enclosures for them. But, the sound from them was amazing. I am still looking for that sound today. I think, in many ways, today's speakers are inferior to those vintage ones of the days that hi fi reproduction was the goal of manufacturers, Today, it is all about colouration.
Speakers are much better today than even 10yrs ago. There were stand outs among older speakers. The difference is that today it is getting hard to buy a truly bad speaker. You've had those speakers so long that maybe they have shaped your tastes. But I bet you'll be blown away by the XT F100's!
I'm wondering how you are comparing all of these different speakers using different receivers/amps when the equipment rotates all the time? Denon to Marantz to Sony and so on, don't you need to be using one baseline system for testing since they all sound different? And the same in reverse for testing receivers/amps, using one set of speakers. Back in the day I remember listening to JBL, Klipsch and other speakers all cross connected to Marantz, McIntosh, SAE and Crown receivers/amps in the showroom and really hearing the glaring differences.
We have plenty of gear that we use long term and directly A/B whenever possible. Plus Andrew takes measurements and copious notes of everything that gets reviewed. Additionally we spend months (typically) with a product if not longer in order to give you the most thorough review possible.
@@KristiWright Thanks for clarifying your testing procedures. I, like many others, enjoy both you and Andrew and your comments about all of the equipment choices available today. I miss the time when you could go to a Hi-Fi showroom and listen for hours to different combinations of amps, pre-amps, tape decks and speakers. Guess I'm just showing my age! Thanks again, you guys are great!
I would get the Bookshelf with the Dynamo 1100x Sub, way better performance, good bass is good bass! Power it with a Billie Heaven 11 MK2 and a Gashelli Labs J2 AKM DAC, would be a killer system

Thanks for the review!!! That sounds like a great speaker to me. 🙂
Like Martin Logan with AMT tweeters, I bought thin-film AMT ribbon tweeter speaker GoldenEar BRX and I love them so much that I bought a 3rd one as the center speaker for the home theater for matching LCR.

Thank you Kristi. I did like these but had to give the review a second listen, wish i heard more of your thoughtsvon these :)

Martin Logan or Kef? Answer and I’ll like the video. 😝

You guys continually, and by a margin, keep delivering my favourite hifi-content. And also, that Eames is beautiful.
Thank you for the kind words!
is the eames a replica?
Thanks! I would love to see you review the Goldenear BRX or the Buchart S4 or S500, in general, but also because I feel these would be great compared to the MLs .
Appreciate the support! Be sure to let GE know about your wishes. As for the other, that will not be happening. Sorry.
@@rwaring58 how are the XL B100's for low and medium volume listening in your apartment? I also am in an apartment and looking at these real hard

I sincerely appreciate your comment and welcome you to our channel and the hobby! Have a great day!
Thanks for this review guys. I was one of the people who asked for it in the comments of the other MartinLogan video. I have my pair coming in two days!
Our pleasure!
Martin Logans were breath taking when I heard them, they were my first audio speakers Ive ever heard 20 years ago...
I don’t think these will sound anything like the ones you owned
Love your reviews! I would love them even more if you added a tiny detail: how wide is the speakers’ (these and all the others you review going forward) “sweet spot?” In “real world” conditions this is one of the most critical details because frankly, music and movies are better enjoyed with a friend or family member or 3 at your side. Can we all enjoy pin point imaging and a wide soundstage, or will that be a luxury for a single person with their “head in a vice?” Nobody mentions this in their reviews, and since you two are a pair you are in a prime position to test this information. Please try to mention it in the future!
Hey guys,
Why no comparison with the ls50 metas when reviewing bookshelf speakers even though they were speaker of the year a while back?
Btw, bought my son a node and crown amp for his first setup in his new/first house per your suggestion. Thanks!
I listened to about all of them in this price range. I went with the Focal Aira 906. The bass they have, while not super low, is quick and tight. They image well, and the mids are sweet. HIghs are plenty clear while being non fatiguing.
Love the video! And I want to add that having Kristy as part of this channel is what makes your videos stand out from the other audio review channels on UA-cam.
Thank you, John!
I was thinking of grabbing a pair of M-L Electromotion ESL or ESL-X, but have put the brakes on till I hear the Motion F-100 and F-200 models. Thank you, Kristi and Andrew, for the recent reviews on the new M-L Motion models! 😉👍
Another terrific review. I like the captions on the bottom left of the screen. A nice bonus. Well done!
Glad you like them!
I've listened to Paul at PS Audio explain the different mechanical parts, drivers, even capacitors... how they break in
Looks like you just experienced breakin for yourself.
I’d pick the F100 tower…I think I’ve reached my end game bookshelf with the KEF R3 …and with the new R3 Meta’s coming out, I’m hoping there is a review on the horizon :)
Thanks again Andrew and Kristi for a great review!!
R3s are on my wish list if i decide i cant fit f100s
@@jonathanwills4726 R3 Meta is better now than the plain R3
If I'm going to add a good subwoofer anyways tower or bookshelf, is the tower a waste? Or will I get even better bass? Just in the sweet spot not for multiple people.
Great review!! How do you feel they compare to Kef LS50 Meta? Same msrp at $1599 a pair.
BRAVO!!! Thank you so much for covering the placement to the wall with so much detail. Such a great help for so many of us!
Also, I’m totally getting the bookshelf and dual subs. This gives much more control over sound when distance from the wall is limited
Heard these in person this weekend... Very nice!
A few possibilities present themselves:
1) Was the center speaker moved or changed in any way?
2) Did you try plugging the B100 ports to improve intelligibility?
3) Was the sub or subs specifically integrated to the B100?
4) Did you experiment with the crossover settings to improve intelligibility?
In our small/medium room, 13x17x8, I suspect the B100 with our two excellent subs would be as good or perhaps better than the F100 and for a third the price. I know that you have addressed the floorstander/bookshelf issue before, and are very familiar with this issue. You may want to expand on this with regard to the B100. Thanks again to you both for your informative and entertaining videos.
They usually test these primarily without a center speaker and may add the center and sub afterwards for add'l test.
You guys nailed this review. I'm so impressed with your spot on recollections of the Focal Chora 806's!
Focal is amazing!!
@@ivanfilatov7913 I use 8 806's for surround/height duties in my HT. I thought I was half nuts when I purchased them but they made an amazing difference over the Emotiva's I had in there previously.
@Bear Claw No, you're not nuts! I'd do it too!
You tell me
And what do you say about the common complaint that these are a bit lacking in the bass?
If anyone is curious, you can check the Dynamo out here bit.ly/3EOFgWi.
I'm curious as to how these Martin Logan speakers compare to the GoldenEar BRX, given their similar specs.
Thanks for not forgetting about my Evo4 kristi 😭
I always like to so how it compares to new speakers and it makes me love them more thanks!

Hello. This is my first time writing. I really like your review format as a couple. I know you have mentioned that these ML hint at the performance of Focal (which I have an older pair of Cobalts 806). Would these (MLs)compare to the higher Focals speakers you have reviewed. Thank you. Again really love your format as a couple,
Thanks!
🙌
Once again, this ML line in this particular finish, is so classy looking. The only current speaker line that i prefer visually is that JBL SDI line in the grey wood finish. Lack of deep bass aside, i would love to hear these. Looks alone? Total breakaway slam dunk. Cheers!
Appreciate you weighing in! I think I need to check out those JBLs.
I havent heard them myself. But that grey finish option looks great in the pictures ive seen. Only seen the gloss black in person. (Meh)
My understanding is that midwoofer cabinet is sealed in the F100 vs the ported B100. I'm willing to bet that is why Kristi thought the dialogue intelligibility was better with the towers. I'm still hoping you'll compare the C100 to the B100. Thanks!
That's a great observation!
Also with everything below 280hz getting filtered out of the mids on the F100's if allows the mid to do it's job and not be stressed trying to reproduce bass frequencies.
F100 has clearer vocals because mid freg driver does not need to reproduce frequencies below 280 hertz. Kristi has a very good ear )

Now I'm curious to find out what you think about these compared to the Revel M16. ;-)
Also - let's get on with that Anthem MRX review.
@@bearclaw5115 I know her name. Been here for awhile. What we old people call spell check! ;)
Comparisons are covered in the video.
CAN
I will need to get our official to see what the sticker for these days - no doubt scary.
I bought the Jamo C series after your review. Love them
Glad you like them!
Thanks for weighing in and watching!
They're attractive speakers for sure.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews yea im usually a function over form kinda guy, but they nailed the look for me
I'd get the F200's with 8" woofers!! Yes, I'm prejudiced against small woofers, as I've not yet met a small woofer that doesn't sound like it's struggling. I've had dual 7's and dual 8's, and neither has satisfied me as much as a single 10, 12, or 15 inch woofer.
Martian Logan Motion XT B100 or Monitor Audio’s new Platinum 100 G3 ?? for a NAD M10 V2
Love the look of these, especially the white. And QOTD: the bookshelves because I have a small space and love bookshelves.
Appreciate you answering!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews appreciate all your hard work!
I really enjoy your reviews
I’d probably go for the towers for the increased bass if the price was right. This series is added to my demo if possible list
$4500 for a pair of F100 towers
Is that a good price for you?
Emotiva has informed us they are not sending their products for review.🤷♂️
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Wow makes no sense does it, everyone raves about them but almost no objective reviews. Thank you for replying!
Well, if you read your last comment again, maybe it does make sense...
Hey Andrew thanks for the awesome review of the Martin Logan B100 I did have the older model but like you said you would up grade for look’s alone I managed to pick up a pair of open box for $1200 awesome speaker compared to the older model
Now here’s my question can I get away with using a different manufacturer for side surround like the Emotiva A+2 surround I already have the A1 for heights they do have any tweeter as well . I’m asking because marring logan can be very expensive .
Thanks for the feed back

A question about comparisons. I hear you asking whether a speaker is 2 or 3 times better than another for comparison. When do you think the law of diminishing returns comes in? Is it not within the price ranges you are showing or do you not take it into account?
Would get the towers. Would probably still blend in a sub or two. Great review.
😂
@@ArthaxtaDaVince777 Not exactly, a ported sub is a necessity in a larger room or for open floorplans. Good call on Rythmik brand.
@@ottoinct In a larger rooms, you can go for larger subs 9/10 times, you don't have to use ported. Rythmik has up to 18 inch sealed subs which would be more than enough for almost any kind of space. But yeah if your room is extremely large for some reason, like 50 ft by 50ft, then yeah, I would go with ported as it will move more air and give louder volume at lower frequencies.
hi Andrew thank u for ur reviews. Do u have a review for MartinLogan Motion Foundation B2 ? thank you
Loved your review.
Everyone should have at least heard a pair of Martin Logan ESL. Just like a quad 57 or an acoustat x. Live changing speakers
Very nice review. I would really like to know how the two of you compared these to the monitor audio silver.
What songs do you use to compare imaging/instrument separation?
The matte white would look so good with walnut sides and gold woofer trim 👌
9 months late, but wondering how these sound if compared to ML's electrostatic panels (specifically the ESL 9). Thanks.
I have heard both. The larger much more expensive ESL9 smokes the XT B100.
@@gregmatula9749 Great insight. Thank you.
I'm a tower man myself....and I'll take a sub to go as well!!! Great review!
Thanks .
Hi, nice review like always, according your taste, are these Martin Logan XT B100 is better to pair with Yamaha-RN2000A or Audiolab 7000A??
Hi Andrew, think you could get your hands on a pair of jtr speakers? Heard they are gold for horn loaded movie lovers. Curious of your opinion!
I like the B-100 - how will these do with the SONOS Amp 250W pairing with the ML 600X
Loving the journey ! Please review the RP 500M II s to round out the affordable bookshelves punching above their weight
