I like this show for the same reason I like the Great British Baking Show: yes, they're nominally competing against each other, but they do it by doing the best they can, rather than trying to sabotage the others.
But they made such a stupid decision with that belt drive. Even without considering the rain a belt has a huge contact area, they might as well have put monster truck wheels on their machine after that.
The problem was that Llewellyn left and they messed around with the concept. They took that one-off Pumpkin Chunking competition and made it the series premise. Big mistake, people wanted to see amateur engineers in a knockout competition using only scrap metal.
That ackerman (or how it's pronounced) is the steering access inclination that's built into common steering. We were taught about that when leaning to do wheel alignment.
Worked with a guy that was into building these things for real competitions... Other than the body and a few tricks, these are pretty much how it's done lol
In case anybody's wondering when this was made, it's from October 1999, i.e. 23 years ago - long before stupidly expensive lithium battery technology and stupidly expensive, hugely overcomplicated EVs; long before Roberty Bobberty started his Fully Charged channel on UA-cam all about generating clean, green, renewable energy; the phasing-out of fossil fuel usage; and how we can all save a modest amount of money by first spending an enormous amount of money... 🤭 True fact: I'm still using the bicycle I bought from Halfords in 2005 for £120, brand new. It's probably worth less than £30 now, but I ride it every day (I do about 70 miles per week), and it costs me virtually nowt to own and run. In 17 years it's covered well over 50,000 miles. Yes, it's hard work pedalling it up hill and down dale across Yorkshire in lovely English weather (⛈️🌧️🌨️🌦️), but it shows no signs of wearing out. Now THAT'S my idea of cheap, effective, durable, efficient transport! 😁
Wow! What an awesome show! Do you think it really was the belt slippage that was the source of the problem? I really thought the green team was going to win by a mile.
Not to be a dink but you live in England and didn't think an extra pound of material would be worth it for a rain guard. If it was Nevada I'd say no, England, yes. Non the less great stuff and it must have been a blast. Better than anything on TV today.
I was young when I watched Scrapheap and Red Dwarf so I never made the connection until many years later. It was only when I saw Robert pull some weird faces that I went "Oh my god that's Kryten!"
You wonder why the Greens never thought of welding a piece of sheet metal to cover their engine knowing how British weather works. Also, since it's number of laps that count, they should have stayed as close to the inside as possible to minimize their distance.
The funny thing is, 250cc engines are practically the same efficiency of 1000cc engines per the same rpm depending on fuel delivery method and weight of the vehicle. There was a guy that put a snow blower motor in a Harley Davidson and got less mpg.
Funny thing is, my 2000 Honda Insight would probably get similar or better mileage under the same circumstances at the same speed. And do it with a full interior and the heater on.
"Petrol's ever so pricey. Wonder what the future holds." From the man now running the Fully Charged channel. I like the irony of this from a man who enjoys the sound of a lumpy V8.
It’s stock music. So just created in a random studio and the show bought it to use for random bites and so they don’t have to pay royalties to actual bands
To have a 3 stroke you'd have to be alternating which side of the piston is driven. Maybe it's technically possible, but it sounds complicated for little benefit.
There is, called the Wankel engine, which uses a three sided eliptiod inside of a rounded chamber to have in intake phase, spark phase and exaust phase happening all at the same time as it spins.
Since when do 2 strokes have exhaust valves? If you're going to talk about things at least learn something about the subject, 2 strokes burn twice the fuel because every downstroke is a power stroke V a 4 stroke which rotates twice as many times per power stroke, making it more fuel efficient.
How awesome would this series be if produced today? With HD cameras the size of a 10cents coin and drones to follow the race. Netflix, get on this! :D
I can't see how it would change it, other than making it more "Hollywood" and I don't think that's in keeping with the premise of the program.
Not everything needs to be in 32k
@@bushratbeachbum Yes they would totally ruin it now a days and add in scripted drama etc
@@Scrapla1 - more scripted drama

Some quality TV right here for a quarantine
Talk about a friendly competition, he even shared the champagne with the other team at the end there.

@@DannyBeans Ooh, I don't know. There were some episodes where they did nick stuff from each other. But by and large, yes it was.
@@thesmithersy Okay, but it was *really* rare. Certainly not a regular feature.
Interesting to watch this in 2024!!!
The production team seeding coffins in the scrapheap to possibly be fairings for the vehicles and neither team takes the bait.
shiiit I remember Bowser and Babs, what a show and what good folks
I wish In A Spin has won! Big fan! I can’t believe the show was ever canceled!

49:29 both teams did punched above their predicted weight as far as the mpg is concerned
So much better than the USA version!
Probably why they got Bowser in for the second series
Good harmless fun.. good sports … impressive win I miss this kind of stuff. Used to like Men and Motors the tv channel :)
It's a shame this show isn't on anymore
This video is so detailed it’s amazing
Interesting to watch the 'future of economical cars' @24:00
Where's my hydrogen powered car Bruce!?
That ackerman (or how it's pronounced) is the steering access inclination that's built into common steering. We were taught about that when leaning to do wheel alignment.
I think the teams were ex aequo except for the rain that disadvantaged the belt option at the end
Thanks for posting

Gotta love a good British tv show! They do them so much better than America
This show should have never been canceled

I have recently retired my Muddy Fox courier bicycle that I purchased in 1987. Not done nearly as many miles as you have though.

4 stroke engines are about twice as efficient as 2 strokes.
Good job boys you played well even tho you didn't pull out a win
Awesome British 90s tv.
That was impressive

I wonder if the bodger's started with a carburetor full of fuel! Would make a difference to the results.
I'm sure they burned both out of fuel before they started
Does the 2 stoke team get Premixed fuel?, or can they add the oil after?
Agree as below great fun

Hydrogen is the future 😂😂😂😂😁🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hydrogen is still in the future, still about a decade off, but now it is for combustion.

So naively optimistic in this episiode.
hey lads (fist of power) haha
That yelow engine is new, they just painted it black...why, whats the fun in that?
Bicycle ten speed rear wheel.
Think it be better if they gave them more build time. So they could actually build some competitive stuff. Make the challenge harder

I have a question regarding engine strokes, why isn't there a 3 stroke?
Intake, compression, power, exhaust. You wouldn't have a running engine without any of those 4, in that order.
To have a 3 stroke you'd have to be alternating which side of the piston is driven. Maybe it's technically possible, but it sounds complicated for little benefit.

What's this nonsense about not being able to engineer a chain drive precisely enough? All they'd need is a bit of a bike frame and done.

The 2 stroke engine was a mistake.
Perhaps…. I’d lay more fault with the belt drive. The rain really hurt the efficiency with that.
