Remember those two sentient diamond golems that the main characters get killed? or the talking dragon in the same episode that is turned into a skeleton? both are somewhat played as jokes and the characters don't give a sad looks and characters saying "its not your fault" (dragon gets some sad looks from the characters, but its then undercut by him coming back to life as skeleton dragon and then exploding into stars). Both the golems and the dragon were sentient and able to talk, unlike the sea serpent,
Our "heroes" actually shout "woo-hoo" when they kill the diamond golems. Mind you that the golems were only angry at the four for stealing water from their sacred fountain.

I mean, not defending the show but at 16:05 kinda dumb points. A scabbard will fly off a sword if you swing it, they don't lock to the blade, that'd defeat the purpose. The sword is double edged, so... there is no blunt. If you mean the saddle of the sword, well, that won't swing very hard or fast, a sword swung by its side towards something is slowed down massively.
I also don't get why it's hard for you to understand that, despite Rosemary not wanting to harm people etc, she has to anyways? You mentioned it yourself, she is in "hero mode." Was a soldier myself, did some shit, too. You do what you need to in the moment and regret it when your life and the lives of others aren't ont he line.
A ton to criticise about this show and stuff but eh, picking at straws... eh. The conflicts were stupidly paced and forced, too much is contrived etc.

Snapdragon's problem: being bullied by his super masculine family until he hates masculinity in general, but has also has it ingrained into him that men must be manly, and that it's wrong for men to like anything feminine, thus making him feel like there's something wrong with him.
The show's solution: have the self insert teacher groom him into being trans

    • @yellowmesh7821
      @yellowmesh7821 2 роки тому +162

It literally screams that the solution isn't that he needs to transition into a woman but simply deal with the fact that he is another guy that has been affected by masculinity tropes and stereotypes in society.
It would've been better if he accepts he isn't going to be like his father or brother wanted him to be but that doesn't make him any less of a capable young warrior. Cause in the flashbacks he isn't presenting any indictations of wanting to be a girl just """stereotypes"""" and """"ways"""" ppl attribute to girls (an not even so cause boys can have empathy for animals and not like fighting games)...
I hate that we can't have male characters deal with toxic masculinity as identifiable males themselves, they have to opt for always making them be seen as girls or to equal them to girls when the fact is they aren't any less men for their inherit characteristics.
It's very twisted that this is a representation of the very toxic 'if you aren't manly then you are a woman' bullshit we as man hear over and over in society, and the fact they instead of fighting it they cradle it to showcase a profesor inserting his beliefs into a young guy.
Attributing transexuality to toxic masculinity is fucked up, that's no reason but self hatred to his gender because of stigma he created by other ppl's concept of it.

      It’s honestly weird.
I’m all for trans representation but not when it’s so thoughtless. If you want to make a trans character, world building becomes a massive part of that. High Guardian Spice’s writers wanted to make being trans a character arc for Snapdragon (I think this can be handled well in any setting… That is, if you’re able to handle it well). But there are so many part of this that just fall flat. There’s so little consideration about how the lore should affect this, I don’t think they can handle this and it would have been better if they took a similar approach to other shows and just made being trans a thing that people happen to be (I know plenty of you guys probably wouldn’t agree about minors transitioning but if you can use magic to transform you should be able to transform back lmao and irl, puberty blockers and social transitioning should be entirely reversible. minors are rarely even put on hormones anyway).

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 2 роки тому +39

Honestly, what bothers me is the inconsistency of it all. Is it accepted? Is it not accepted? It certainly *seems* to be socially accepted, but they treat it like this niche thing that people don't know about.(I mean, Rosemary had 0 idea what it is. That scene had to have some reason to it for the fictional world, right?) There are also the minor contradictions, like how feminine boys and crossdressers are weird, but trans is not and how they bothered to make a permanent potion, but didn't bother making the actual duration permanent and people instead have to refresh it every so often.
It's just...nothing lines up. And it doesn't even serve any legitimate purpose. Instead of being a tool used for the story to properly explore identity, it's just "diffrent gender gud" and how certain personalities happen to line up with gender stereotypes. I understand that it's that simple for many people in real life, but this is still fantasy. They don't *have* to stick to how things work in reality, as long as they don't get offensive.

The chances of a season 2 are pretty low, but apparently the creators have come out and said that they consider Snapdragon trans, which honestly defeats the purpose of his argument with Sage in the hedge maze, about whether or not boys are just as in touch with their emotions and friendships as girls, by simply having him turn into a girl and suddenly Sage's argument that boys can't understand girl friendship is true, since Snapdragon is no longer a boy. And by having Sage start crushing on him the instant she sees how pretty he is "as a girl" in the mermaid costume, it just shows that she only likes his femininity.

Kanji struggles with being known for being a delinquent (in reality he's beating up bikers because they keep his mom up at night) but also with the fact that he likes sewing and crocheting, which are typically feminine interests, as a man. Honestly I hate the idea of snapdragon transitioning, not because trans characters aren't good, but because it implies acting different than your birth gender means you're trans. That's such a harmful idea and it just reinforces gender roles. Caraway wasn't a perfect character, but at the very least he didn't say "I didn't like wearing dresses so I figured I was a boy", so why couldn't they do the same with snap? God
Also, it'd be interesting if transition was done with old magic, considering you have to give something back in order to cast it. That'd be a good allegory for the whole trans thing, since irl transitioning can cause you to lose friends and family. A little too dark, but it could work
Edit: Now that I'm thinking about the whole "boys don't talk about their feelings" scene, honestly? I think what would be better is Sage saying Snapdragon doesn't understand how hers and Roses relationship works because they're really close friends, not because they're girls, and snapdragon getting upset because he likes/has a crush on sage. I know there have been a bunch of comments already pointing out flaws with the Snapdragon and Carroway scene (IE the hypocrisy that anyone who isn't manly is trans, reinforcing stereotypes of both sex, etc) I want to delve in on another point
You briefly mentioned that Caraway mentions that there are multiple options, but immediately afterwards, he starts introducing and teaching Snapdragon about transition magic. To me, this raises a bunch of red flags: Caraway is giving the illusion of choice to Snapdragon but only tries to show him a single path. Combined with the fact that Snapdragon is in a vulnerable, emotional state at that moment, it REALLY feels like Caraway is grooming a child into becoming trans, which is not the right message to send.
Furthermore, I just want to bring to light that a few people are trying to defend this by saying that Snapdragon is an "egg" - aka a trans person who doesn't realise that they're trans, to which I say: "Isn't trying to make judgements about who someone's sex just from their actions not only - again - going against the idea of the initial LGBT movement, but just really creepy?" It just opens the way for people to try and pressure others into using labels they aren't at all comfortable with.

The writing of this show reminds me of a young anime fan attempting to make their own show. They only add stuff they really want, then leave out the important things that make the anime that they are inspired by...actually good. The thing with this show is that the creators focus more on the characters(and relationships-which aren't even done right lmao),more than the actual plot and environment. Also I feel like the creators just wanted to create a show just to get a fandom, which is probably why the characters are so one-dimensional and they remind me of headcanons someone would've made .Honestly if they wanted to make a slice of life they should've done that since they can't bother fully expanding on fantasy themes and staying in that lane.

I don't know if that is even accurate. Even if a young anime (or any form of entertainment media like cartoon, TV show, movie, or book) fan neglects storytelling, setting, and focus solely on characters, you will still see the effort they put into developing their character. You will still be able to describe who the character is, how she acts, how she handles situations, etc. My Immortal is a good example. The writing is atrocious, the plot makes no sense, the setting can be best summarized by the words "I don't care if this makes sense. I'll add it in because it's awesome," but I can still tell you that Ebony Darkness Dementia Raven Way is an extremely narcissistic, spoiled, and crass emo teenager.
I can't tell you a single thing about the characters of High Guardian Spice. In fact, I don't think they even qualify as characters. They're more like caricatures that the writers can stick on their hands and live out their fantasy of finally winning a political argument.

However, this seems to be a bit too complicated for the writers to properly execute, and decided to go the trans route because it's "easier". A couple thoughts occurred to me after finishing the series. The first thought went something like "oh my _Goooooooddddd_ this is boring..." But the second was that, if the writers had any brains whatsoever, it might have occurred to them that the way they wrote Old Magic versus New Magic was essentially a metaphor for martial arts in an era of increasingly common _gun_ use.
Just listen to how they're described. Old Magic is an older art form reliant on a lot of knowledge, preparation, personal sacrifice, and so on. However, New Magic is bound to terraspheres (which are implied to be on the expensive side) and can be released by any dork without necessarily needing knowledge or power. Amyrillis even describes New Magic as when somebody else far away builds what amounts to a magical cartridge, as if they can be mass produced. They're fathoms more effective, and you don't even need any magical aptitude or energy to use it. (Not like an implied mana pool is _ever_ brought up or even implied in this show at any point, so what does it matter? What stops a warrior like Rosemary or a ranger like Thyme from having their own terrasphere and rendering Sage utterly superfluous?) The worst thing that can possibly happen is either (1) it runs out of power (which only happened once, and never when the user would have been put in peril), or (2) you lose control like a total Alec Baldwin and accidentally shoot someone. Also, while the in-the-know characters will constantly talk up New Magic as the empirically superior thing you should always go for if you have the choice, they'll always have that caveat that Old Magic is still useful... for some reason. Though HGS never elaborates on that with any degree of depth, I presume the idea is that Old Magic forms the theoretical basis for a lot of how New Magic works at its highest levels of use. In fact, someone who _is_ capable of doing both is considered the biggest badass of all.
This is all true in the relationship between martial arts and guns, where guns are the inherently superior thing that anybody can use, but there's still the understanding that if you don't have a grasp of some of the basic fundamentals, you can be as much of a danger to yourself and others as the threat you're trying to shoot. Also, there's a fairly high financial barrier to having your own gun, and just because you have a gun doesn't mean it's the right fit for use as your every day carry (or EDC in self-defense parlance). And lastly, while guns are objectively better, the gold standard is to know your way around both your gun _and_ to know some kind of practical martial art (such as Judo or Krav Maga; think less triple-spinning-corkscrew-back-kick, more hit-bad-man-with-planet) and thus you'll be ready for anything at any distance.
There was even that scene where Sage was trying to stealth draw her terrasphere on Olive in a _clearly_ Old-West-y, Big-Iron-y sort of way, only to get it blown out of her hand. This demonstrates that this show was written by people who think you can shoot guns out of people's hands... Don't do that IRL, by the way. You are responsible for all bullets you discharge until they stop moving, including if you miss and skull-fawk a pedestrian, so keep it center of mass. Yes, Navy SEALs shoot people in the head. No, you are not basically just as good as a Navy SEAL. Clearly somebody had this idea, and invoked a lot of firearms tropes. But instead, the official interpretation seems to be "well _my_ magic can do anything I want, so there! (*blows raspberry*)" So mature. An exemplar to us all, really. Wasn't one of the guardian vows to "stay curious" or something?

    • @rangerreview1780
      @rangerreview1780 2 роки тому +27

You can't have world building in this series. Because they took a place where magic makes anything possible. And are trying to plaster real world elements into it. They will keep getting stuck on things. Because what they want to tell will break a plot later on. Trans issues would not exist in this world. It be all common and accepted. The devil lady and the giant. This world would have already dealt with different species intermingling. What does trans matter at that point? Snap can just switch back if it isn't what he wants. In the later episode when he's talking about the girls being Mermaid's. Nothing was stopping him for just changing into one. Than figure out who he is. For this to work like they wanted. The magic element had to have been found out a year ago. Where no one can control it properly. Than these things could work in a better way. But there be no school, or anything else.
That's why this two parter is messed up. They devise a plot for the characters to go to. But don't care how the character had to be, to reach this point. They're treated like video game characters. What we see, is all that matters. They had no life before they came on screen. That's why Sage yelling at Rose happens now. And not years ago, or during the moments she mentions. To do this better. Would have required them to show the early days of their lives. And had Rose ignore Sage, when she talked. But than you start questioning, why is she her friend. You'd have to build a whole flashback episode just around this. Or build a whole episode focusing solely on Rose and Sage having a huge argument. Triggering this event. You'd still also need flashbacks. This could be Sage's personality arc. She stayed quiet all these years. Maybe Sage couldn't make friends easily.
This could all be tied with the whole old and new magic. Sage doesn't want to use new. And didn't really want to say it out loud. This shows she has self esteem issues. With Rose being an airhead, was the first time anyone wanted to be with her. Sage is basically treating Rose like her new magic position. This could have been where she would make the decision to use new magic or old, while telling Rose. This is actual world building. A plot line for a main character. That wraps into the shows primary story. It be hard to get these characters to work. If all this was revealed. You'd need many episodes to get this to flow. And this is not their goal.
What was stopping Sage from using her old magic to fight the cat girl. She doesn't need her orb thing. Heck, Sage is technically better than all magic users. Because she can use both. Disarm her, go manual. The writers where stopping her, that's it. Like they stopped this show from becoming something good. When I see Rose stop with the whole blood cutting thing. It's like they're breaking the forth wall. "Is my series showing blood?"

I only saw this show as a set piece, or soapbox, to use for their obscene messages. The idea of trying to actually craft a deep and thought out world was probably secondary to them. I mean, why bother with doing that for a show you worked so hard on, when you can use it to be spiteful towards men, have your representation of characters/stereotypes you want to see more of, but done poorly, and show how "diverse" it is because of the people working on it.
There's better ways to making great works of art, that can give shine to diverse characters, without making it come out as pandering, spiteful, and overall lazy. I'd honestly love to see a MC that's Trans, and how the writers actually give depth to this person and their mental, emotional, physical and spiritual struggles on trying to find and accept themselves on who they are, or wish to be; without it coming off as condescending, preachy, and political.

In short... he wants to be EXACTLY what his dad wants him to be but doesn't want to JUST because HIS DAD said it. (a MAN said it) Even though the girls are doing what the dad teaches like it's second nature. The only difference is Snapdragon wants to look a bit on the pretty side while doing it.
Which... at least with what the dad says... is not an issue. All he says is to fight to get what you want. Protect what you feel is yours and that's it, right?
I mean, no matter who you are... that's a good lesson to teach.

@@daryatislenko4651 True. What's fun about anime is that the deeper you look into the story or character it gets more interesting and you may learn more stuff making them feel more alive.
But with HGS, it's like you can see the lack of depth and even find writing mistakes like this.
Which is a real shame, since everyone says Snapdragon is their best-written character. (which I agree in concept) But the more you look into him... you realize he's sadly just as badly written/executed as the rest of them.
The difference is that he's not a common stereotype. (at least in the west) The closes I can see him being is what the anime community calls a trap. aka a guy or girl completely looks and acts like the opposite sex that is revealed of what their true gender is either when they are introduced, or partway through their story arcs.
But they are usually shown as very confident people. Kind of like what the self-insert teacher is meant to be written.

Girls can have masculine traits and guys can have feminine ones. And you don't need to play into the stereotypes that the creators should be against.

Honestly, the moment of her looking at the sword could stand to be an intensely interesting character moment. I don't know if they'll ever build on it, but having the generic fantasy hero go... "Oh, shit, I have to _hurt_ people to be the hero." is an interesting subversion. Yakuza 0 did it astoundingly well with both Kiryu and Majima having to confront the question; is crossing the moral line of murder something they're willing to do to be the men they aspire to be?
Here, it juxtaposes something even more interesting. The stories children are told are often sanitized. Using the mature limits to have a childlike character confront reality can provide growth that is often missed in other stories. Either the hero goes "a good guy never kills nobody!" and can always talk their way out of it or the the character is simply never challenged with it by killing robots or nonhuman entities.

Self control is an important aspect of writing, and as a writer myself I understand how difficult it is to maintain.
I've had to stop myself a lot from jumping the shark and getting to certain moments that I liked, when I needed to actually build up to it with less exciting bits of writing. I've had to re-write a lot of segments to make them more subtle.
This show has all the subtlety and style of a shit covered bull in a knickknack shop, to paraphrase someone else. I think putting forth political messages and philosophy in a story can be done well, I mean George Orwell was extremely good at it. But you have to know what you're doing, and they clearly don't.
If you're going to present ideas that have clear parallels to real life they need to be presented fairly and in a balanced way. This show says "fuck that" and just goes with a shallow and vapid "old stuff bad, new stuff good" message and the writers don't have the skill, tact, or self awareness to create something that can actually argue the case and give it the due diligence a political/philosophical topic needs to be engaging for an audience. This show isn't for anyone other than the creators themselves. It's self indulgent trash, which is why it's so unmitigated and amateurish.

    - Wait, aren't Anise and Aloe supposed to be happily married? If these "parties" they go to are what we think they are, are the ladies THAT bored with each other? Geez, between them and that woman who suggested zoophilia, Episode 8 is so filthy...
    - Rosemary only then taking in the harm she caused to Olive doesn't seem too unbelievable, honestly. I only say this because I've seen something similar in Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes - Meryl, a young woman who always fantasized the idea of being a soldier, shot down several Genome Soldiers and was horrified after seeing what she did. I don't think most rookies would understand what kinds of moral risks they're taking until they cross that first line.
    - Honestly, Snapdragon's father didn't seem that bad to me. He just acted like a typical dad - he stopped Yarrow from getting rough with the river bunny, he encouraged Snap to stand up for what he wants to protect, even let the boy hit him in the jimmies in the process. One could probably interpret this as Snap just misunderstanding his dad's intentions...if one ignored the writers' tragically blatant intentions. (Also, how could the man have a full beard at age 12? It could definitely happen at 18, but...12??)
    - But yeah, Caraway's talk with Snapdragon just ruins everything when you remember the bigger picture - especially Sage's sexist rant in Episode 6 and Julia claiming that Snap's a trans girl...It really would've been better if the transition magic was permanent instead of needing a monthly potion, so Caraway could point out that it's a big risk to take (Manga Writer has a little animatic revolving around this idea). And I still think the "prettyboy" route would've been more interesting for Snapdragon, to prove that there are more shades than just manly men and feminine women - like, there's PLENTY of pretty men in fiction, especially Japanese fiction, who are still strong at their core without needing to turn female (Cecil Harvey is one of my favorite examples).
    - Looking up the episode summary, the Scypith used to be friends with the merfolk. So...yeah, that's likely why they wanted to not kill it.

The thing is, Cal's reaction could have easily been something perfectly understandable.
Just say he comes from a traditional family, in a way, you can say he's a foil of Snapdragon but he embraces tradition compared to Snap struggling with his own wants and desires and how they mesh with how he was taught. In this moment, if we were to follow this thread, Cal would probably, instead of being a bully, IGNORE Snapdragon and just not relate to him. So, when they're going to the Mermaids, you can have the two come into conflict about what Snapdragon thinks is 'okay' and what Cal doesn't. In this way, they could have Snapdragon realize a bit more about himself while also understanding a bit about what tradition means to different people.
Cal, meanwhile, could come to accept the world for what it is. In this hypothetical situation, it's not that he doesn't know crossdressing exists, it's that he doesn't care for it much like his family. They don't care for things NOT traditional and they run with the angle that he's simply, unfornately to him, more 'okay' with it but only so much as knowing it exists and not having a thing to do with it.

Exactly what you said, in a world where transformation is so easy like a snap of your fingers, why is gender still the biggest issue here? Snapdragon's arc is really just trans stuff forced in for no reason but to push the creator's agenda. Imo the craziest part about snapdragon is that he's really progressive and mature. "You can't change who you are." that is very powerful and progressive line and it's honestly a brave thing for a gender dysmorphic person to say/understand and face especially coming into 2022. But instead of being supportive, caraway just dismisses it. Just talks about transitional magic, feeding into Snap's self esteem issues.
It makes sense if these issues are incorporated into the fantasy for example like snap wanting to become a mermaid (this alone already represents all the transgender issues). He understands there is transformation magic already, it's pretty much part and parcel of life in this world. But he is incompatible to transform into a mermaid because he is of the fire element while the mermaid race is of water. So this is a realistic struggle for him that correlates in this world.
And also Caraway has no business to be trans, I really despise this character. He could have been biologically male, not understand what snap is going through and try to relate his life to Snap. This transition magic is really a slap in the face for all the trans people out there. In our reality they have to sacrifice everything, friendships ruined and lives torn apart. Years of therapy/hormones and torment just to feel normal. And then transitional magic just goes 'poof, you have a penis now. Congratulations you're now officially a man.' This really is raye rodriguez's wet dream fantasy on how easy she wishes transitioning is.
    edit
I've felt like I missed something about Snapdragon's character and I just realised that it's much more worse than that. The fact is snapdragon never wanted to be a woman in the first place, he only admires women and hates that he's going to turn into a character like his father. All he needs a strong adult male role model that looks like his father but is soft and sensitive. To tell him that it's okay to be a man and be feminine/sensitive at the same time, snap doesn't need this trans nonsense. It honestly makes caraway's character even worse right now

On the topic of transition vs transformation magic. I had a character I had written who was male to female trans in a story with magic in the world. Transformation magic existed, but was generally limited. A magic user could transform into an animal as an example but only one tied to their bloodline. Rather than make it like they do in High Guardian Spice, I decided for her that she would have a magic tattoo which basically acted as the spell to regulate everything from her biology to her magic, as magic interacted differently between the sexes. This tattoo didnt need to be refreshed or anything, it was simply there as a runic representation of the spell used to keep it active as very few spells would be permanent without it being etched into the thing it is being cast on.
I already feel like in just explaining one trans character very loosely ive gone more into the magic system than HGS did in its entire season.

This just feels like a high schoolers first fantasy story...with current topics sprinkled in. Like the biggest thing is the whole trans topics they like to bring in, it had MULTIPLE ways of being portrayed with more subtlety than the infamous "haha I'm transgender" line. They could've said shit like "I use transformation or illusion magic to be my true self and it took many years keep up for long stretches of time" just anything more than literally saying it plain as day and using the exact same process as real life for transitioning. This is supposed to be fantasy and I feel like I'm watching a parody at this point with how much the concept is lost like the sea monster is literally a robot and not just a summon????
Another issue I have is when all straight male characters are treated as if they're the scum of the earth because the team is really only favoring men who transitioned or want to be trans. As if no straight guy can be complex and have issues as well to tie into whatever fucking themes they wanted to present - but at this point it's just too much of a projection of the creator and it just comes off as a sorry attempt that shouldn't have even been close to the word anime with how childish everything feels let alone looks.

The Snapdragon/Sage thing kinda rubs me the wrong way, sure they were friends and I don't want to say at all that you can't forgive and forget someone obviously, but the way that before Sage had said that stuff about how he couldn't understand girl friendships and now that he looks more feminine she's giving him a little flustered compliment and he's going along with her. I would forgive someone saying something like that but I don't think I could be attracted to them after, especially when it comes to whatever they mentioned. A lighter version is in a lot of romcoms that usually revolves around someone being good or bad at an activity because of their gender, which also feels superficial but it's used as a way to impress and catch the main character's eye. Here, that's a quite personal and deep cut. Saying you aren't able to understand something normal unless you were X and then only being validated when you consider being or look like X is really hurtful and possibly harmful to others watching.
I also mentioned this in another reply but the decision to make Snapdragon trans in context feels wrong and forced, telling him he basically can't feel ok or do anything good in world and in writing unless he's female or at the very least "not male".

Because this is not the real world of plastic surgery, hormones, and vocal training to take on the outward appearance of being the opposite sex. This is a world of fantasy where you fully and completely transform into the opposite sex. Pretending these are the same is futile because they obviously are not, and this fact obliterates all possible weight from this contrived conflict.

Many send a person out into the world to get an insight of how to help that is different to what they know. The fact she's being stubborn has kept her close minded and should have honestly been something mentioned by her mother if the writers could think.

I also just have to add that I hate the "Fall Processional" idea. It perfectly highlights the lack of creativity in this show. You have a magic fantasy world's version of Halloween and what do you do with it? Nothing. You just make it Halloween with another name. It also makes no sense for Cal to go off on Snapdragon here. Everyone is in costume, so it feels forced that Cal would think a costume is "messed up". That scene should have had Cal walking in on Snapdragon dressing as a girl in his dorm, where it he couldn't brush it off as just a costume. Just more of that "first draft script" writing that plagues this show.

Caraway could've been a very nuanced character. I think Caraway should have started pressuring Snap to confront her dysphoria. Maybe it gets to a point where one of the other professors or Amaryllis confronts him about it and Caraway admits it's because Snap is showing the EXACT same signs he did when he was her age, and just wants to help Snap avoid going through the same pain he did by just ripping off the bandaid, so to speak.
Maybe this could end with them forming a genuine bond where Caraway backs off and realizes that he has to respect Snap's boundaries and let her go on her own journey, even if it will be a bit painful

I find it very strange that the writers had the gall to include technology like a highly advanced robot, in the SAME episode, that they show them using brooms on boats as an replacement for a motor. Like...what?! How is the worldbuilding, THIS bad that they introduce something, once, and never show any inkling of something similar again? Especially something as groundbreaking as a controllable robotic monster! We've seen that there's some technology in certain places, like that trolley or train; but that compared to a mecha squid monster is a HUGE leap in tech!
Just because this is a fantasy world where magic exists, doesn't mean they can't have modern technology; oh wait, I guess it can, because that would contrast their "Old" and "New" Magic issue wouldn't it? At that point, who would care about Magic when you have technology so advance they can create their own monsters? People would be running around with cellular phones, watching television; there would hardly be any need for magic. It would've been far more interesting to see how the development of high technology was viewed against those who wished to keep the "Old" magic, and that Magic was at odds with people who saw it as outdated; maybe even have "New" magic be based off technology advancing? I don't know, but it would be far more compelling of an issue compared to what we keep getting.
This show man, it has so many problems excluding their poor representation and inclusion of the LGTBQ+ nonsense; I don't even care about that, it's more of an annoying knat buzzing around, than most of the other eyesores this show has in it.

The part about the scene between Caraway and Snapdragon was good. I agree with all of your points and they’re thought out. Just a quick note since you mentioned this, kids can’t and aren’t allowed to medically transition and other trans people agree that they shouldn’t transition so early either. The most a trans kid can do is dress the way that feels most comfortable to them and use a different name and pronouns. And when they get close to puberty, they only have the option to use puberty blockers to delay puberty and will let them decide later as an adult if they really do want to medically transition or go through puberty normally by just not taking puberty blockers. So yeah, kids won’t be pushed into medically transitioning, and they’re allowed to figure things out later as an adult.

Puberty blockers are reversible, and for someone who is a trans man they can take puberty blockers and not have to do top surgery as an adult and save money and experience less dysphoria. Puberty can be an awful and dysphoric experience for trans people and simply delaying it until they’re an adult and can make decisions regarding that helps them actually figure things out. @@trumann5975 Yeah, that makes sense. That’s why a lot of decisions are made when they’re older. Puberty is hard to reverse, so puberty blockers, which are completely reversible, allows them to wait until adulthood to make serious decisions about their body. Girls can be more masculine and still be girls and boys can be feminine and still be boys, and I’ve met a variety of different people who didn’t necessarily fit gender roles when I was in school and were happy too. But of course, we won’t know about their gender and how they feel more than themselves. They’re allowed to figure themselves out and giving them extra time and explaining to them the possibilities and complexities of gender helps them be less confused and not jump into wrong decisions or be misinformed. If they have any doubts about who are, they can always talk to a doctor or therapist, and from there, doctors and therapist can help them figure things out. If they’re too young to really confirm if they’re trans, then they’re also too young to really confirm if they’re cis too. Nothing permanent will be done to kids or teens and they have all the time they need to explore and be themselves. Nice talking with you.

Quick note on Snapdragon breaking his wrist punching somebody: It's not unbelievable because he is swinging around that huge axe, it's unbelievable because that's...how the eff do you grow up in a family of manly-men who punch each other as a bonding activity and then go to school to learn how to be a guardian (as a fighter!) without learning how to throw a punch properly? Because you can break your wrist--if your form absolutely, completely, and totally sucks. Also, it means your form is absolutely and completely trash.
But hey, every here has trash form. My main martial arts training is actually in swordsmanship. I don't even know how anybody but a rank n00b manages to lose their grip on their sword like Rose did, and I've been around for running rank n00bs through the initial drills. We actually made 'em earn using anything beyond fingers-and-imagination, because of the simple fact that if you eff up with live steel or even most of what we'd use for practice, you can accidentally maim and even kill people. It was a huge part of why we used protective equipment, even when we were using blunted swords (which is usual with practice rapiers) or wooden weapons.
Rose would have had the whole "LET'S SWING LIVE STEEL AROUND PEOPLE FOR LULZ!" thing beaten out of her years ago. Literally, if necessary, because I cannot emphasize this enough--you swing live steel around like that, you are threatening the lives of everybody who is within at least your sword's length, and more likely just in your general proximity. Your sword is not a TOY, and somebody who doesn't respect live steel can't be trusted with it. (And it doesn't have to be sharp to be live steel--what decides if it's live steel is simply if it is possible TO sharpen it. If you're in doubt about what you're considering swinging around in public? Unless it's obviously not metal, DON'T.)

The headmistresses are unlikely meant to be taken as a time traveler, they're reference to the neopagan Triple Goddess; she's a triunity, three aspects of one divine being each representing a stage of a woman's life, as well as the lunar cycle and the heavens/earth/underworld; the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone. It wouldn't mean the Crone is literally from the future; she represents wisdom (not the same as omniscience), repose, death, and endings. The imagery doesn't mean anything because the show doesn't do anything with it other than indicate one of the writers probably thinks Wicca or some other neopagan practice is neat.
This trinity image is found all across ancient mythos. The Norns, the Moirai, the Charites, the Horae (ancient Hellenistic reckoning only had three seasons), etc. Some goddesses were also worshiped as triunities (ex Diana as huntress, Diana as the moon, Diana of the underworld; or Hera as the Girl, The Woman, the Widow), Hecate being the earliest known example.

As far as we know, they could just be 3 women, who are probably related (ex daughter, mother, grandmother), that run the academy and frankly they didn't provide anything to indicate more than that.
The fact the faculty are all immortal also just doesn't serve any purpose- they're not shown to be competent (having fallen into every one of the villains' traps in these last episodes), so it's not like it lets them provide a sense of safety within the school. Contrast with the early books of Harry Potter, where much of the wacky danger was framed as being relatively illusory as the teachers are actually in control of the situations even if it wasn't communicated to the students.

One thing to remark upon about Snapdragon. By the series' own rules, best I can tell, there is no reason to not fiddle with transition magic because if one were to do that in this setting and not be into it, then they could presumably just walk out. Haven't watched this in full so I don't know if Carroway ever said "By the way if I miss a dose it goes right to my thighs and then I blow up." or something, but the thing about real-world transitions is that you can't really back out once done is done. Best I understand the narrative is putting too much weight on the matter when the world presented lacks the limitations that cause that weight to be applicable to reality, which is probably a symptom of projecting reality into a fantasy that runs on fundamentally different rules.

Interesting Detail about HGS I want to bring up.
If anyone here has seen or heard about LIttle Witch Academia, they know that when it was airing on chruncyroll it was their golden goose. Their beloved show that was practically the REASON to have it and while it has it's flaws it was overall solid and enjoyable and very popular to a degree. However the creators didn't want to do a season 2 for their own reasons despite CR badly wanting one. It was clear they wanted to keep the money flow that Little witch academia gave them going and keep the fanbase and fandom of it around.
Shortly after LWA ended, High guardian spice was announced. And when you compare the two, you can see a good number of similairites. I bring this up beacuse looking at the script, the concepts and ideas of HGS it's...Strange it even got approved to get made. As it's very barebones alongside it's many other issues. And it seems hte creator had pitched it to multiple stuido's before but all said 'No'. But CR said yes.
I leave it up to you to do with that thougth as you wish.

It's kind of ironic that the writer began thinking of this concept of a show while still identifying as a girl, so she (at the time) dreamed of a magical girl story to tell. But clearly now as an adult wanted to tell a story about transgender characters. You can tell because the most interesting characters with the most character-building are both trans. The story would have been better suited as a story centering on snap's struggles internally with his gender and place in the world alongside some form of external conflict i.e. better-written villains or something to keep the plot moving instead of whatever it is driving this show, hell as far as I know his mom isn't mentioned in the show so she could easily have been the MC's mom. The show has no central theme either, or at least none that I could discern. This is an easy mistake to make in amateur writing because, in a good story, there is always an overarching story theme that resonates in every character from one angle or another, like the theme of "revealing yourself to others, and the difficulty of that" in Fruits Basket or the theme of "don't let others walk all over you, stand up for yourself and others" in Tokyo Ghoul.

There is literally 0 gender steriotypes (one standart-ass bully and father-bully is really weak reason). They need more time for showing how cruel their world can be. Or maybe about some old world rules that still somebody use or a place where they still works (Snapdragons father - is weak example). But no.
Like, Rosemary's mother is FREAKIN WARRIOR and father is BAKER by standarts of our world this is kinda wrong. Also, rulers of the academy is bunch of womans.
And transition magic. This is just another level of how much creator just want a perfect world but use some pure exuse for make it "a rare thng because of that", There is no basically reasons why Snapdragon just cant transform himself into some androginos man.

Eh, introducing a trans character within the first season isn't bad, what's bad is making a huge deal of it.
To paraphrase some immortal wisdom: "Being trans isn't a personality trait."
Not having gender stereotypes or transphobia doesn't mean that world can't have trans people, it just means that being trans shouldn't be an issue in that world, anymore than someone's hair color. ESPECIALLY with actually well-done worldbuilding (which this show doesn't have).
This whole show is a mess and seeing people try to make it work looks like trying to keep the Titanic from sinking with duct tape.

@@neoqwerty Internet makes this a personality trait and even more - give people a greatest reason to bully each other because somebody call that person a man instead of non binary. Sheesh. Also, you dont get the point.
They choose to seat on "they bully him and this is why he is want to be trans". You eather show just a happy trans in world where is mysoginy isnt a thing or a hard way to accept themself in cruel world.
      Not all at once.
And you implying that because this show is bad i cant voice my opinion?
Jesus Christ this is dumb point. And you really should read before post your commentary.

I felt like Snapdragon should go through self discovery of learning to be comfortable with himself, and learn that he could be a boy, and be “beautiful” with the transgender teacher helping him come to that choice. Also why couldn’t that call “transformation magic” transfiguration. All that trans mean is to change from one thing to another, something that was part of the normal teaching in Harry Potter. Oh wait the Harry Potter books are actually good.

As much as I don't mind lgbt+ this show definitely showed too much about gay couple and trans like don't get me wrong I don't mind if there are some lgbt+ relationship in this series but they can't even afford themselves to add a character that is at least binary and cishetero? They can't even afford themselves to have a character who are bi that leans towards their opposite genders. The fact they talk big about diversity on this show is baffling as hell. Like does a bit of straight relationship hurts them that much that they literally stereotype all straight men as asshole? Like personally as much as straight guy I am that doesn't prevent me to not liking girls who are bi,pan or even trans(male to female). If the writers truly wanting to show diversity then the last thing they could to is to NOT exclude every single people regardless of gender identity, genders and sexuality including belief. In matter of fact they can just give a pure equality aspect in the show which mind you I see nothing of sorts. All I see from this show is extreme political viewpoints, extreme sexism and above all inequality towards any people who are outside of lgbt+.

I feel the need to toss this in here as this was something I realized recently. When I first started writing, my very first project ever was a Mashup of high fantasy adventure and slice of life magic school...basically what HGS is. It wasn't remotely good and in hindsight of reviewing my own first drafts, it's immensely jarring to go from school bullshit to fantasy combat situations. I've since moved on to other projects and that one has long since been scrapped, but I thought it was interesting that HGS is basically where I started and is probably what would have happened if I hadn't realized it was a terrible idea

It's possible that transformation magic always reverts after a month or so. Nothing in the show really indicates that once something is transformed that it permanently remains in its magically altered state, does it? Yes, they did have to use magic to turn NeppyCat back the first time, but that's because they wanted it done right away. Maybe he would have reverted on his own but it would have taken weeks.

I just realized that it would've made more sense if Aster took Cal's role. That way, you wouldn't have to introduce yet another sexist jerk character.

I would assume the silhouette fight animation was inspired by Sayaka's fight against Elsa Maria, in Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
The sort of scene shows up often in other shows, especially old samurai flicks in which you see the protagonist fighting a bunch of goons through a screen wall. However, if you are looking for magical girl anime that might be the direct inspiration for a silhouette fight, PMMM is the likely source.
(It's a good show, if you haven't seen it before.)

I should mention there is another parallel to the show, in that it has a rival magical girl character wielding a spear-like weapon fighting the aforementioned Sayaka, who uses a sword. Not the same scene as the Elsa Maria one, but it is something to note.

IMO this kinda way of explaining something can still work in a show with an adult demographic.
It just needs to be there as a way of expressing the inner childishness/optimism of the character who's explaining it.
Technically it's for teens, but one good example is Rukia in Bleach, where she'll draw cute diagrams to help explain things to Ichigo.
