I love the shot of Bill watering the flowers in the final 10 years section. The flowers were Frank's idea--and you know he cared for him for as long as he could. When he could no longer get around the property to keep them up, Bill silently, happily took it up to keep it going. And in that scene, Bill waters the flowers, then winks at Frank, acknowledging how much Frank's love had changed him with that simple gesture.

Bill and Frank's story really touched me. In the real world, same sex marriage wouldn't be legal in Massachusetts until 2004. Here, the world fell apart in 2003, before any of that could happen for these two. Seeing as they met in middle-ish age in the mid-2000s, they were around to witness the AIDS crisis just a couple decades earlier, and likely lost friends during that period. Survival for people like them was never guaranteed in the "normal world", so for them to survive another epidemic, find love, and build a home in the ruins of a devastated community is a perfect example of "winning" the apocalypse.

The writers, Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett better win an Emmy for this episode.

This was masterpiece level writing and attention to detail with unbelievably good acting pulling it all together.
NGL; My wife and I, plus both my teenage daughters were literally blubbering messes whilst watching this episode.
If deviating from the game is going to give us this level of writing, I’d rather they stretch out the two games over three or four seasons, because this episode was nothing short of phenomenal IMHO.

I was not ready for the emotional beauty and tragedy of this episode. This was the hardest I've cried at something like this in a while.
I hate that bigots are hating and review bombing this episode. People need to grow up, love is love and this episode was one hell of a love story.
Fun fact: Nick Offerman didn’t have time to read the script and almost missed it. His wife read it and told him he had to go give it a chance! His real world wife is Megan Mullally, aka Karen from Will & Grace :)

The episode is about the main theme of The Last of Us. Surviving vs Living.
Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live.
The difference between the game and the movie happens during that argument in the street. In the game Bill says absolutely not, Frank starts resenting him because he’s an extrovert. Eventually Frank leaves, gets bitten, hangs himself to not turn. And leaves an angry letter to Bill, to which Bill swallows his tears and feelings and goes, “Well then fuck you too”. Bill will die bitter and angry having never lived at all.
In the show Bill compromised a bit, and let Frank love him how he wanted to love him. Let him make a friend, Tess and Joel. Spruce up the neighborhood. Frank in turn compromised and settled for just that. It’s still an apocalypse, he can’t invite too many people or do too much. So they both died satisfied, in each other’s arms, after a full life.
In either case their plot purpose is to teach Joel that surviving isn’t enough. In the game Bill shows Joel how bad and purposeless his life can be if he doesn’t open up. In the show Bill shows Joel how good it can be if he opens up.
Joel reads the letter and realizes that Frank died happy. And Tess died never having that chance. So he starts opening up a bit.
Both Bill and Franks are sides of the same coin. The bad ending. And the good ending.
I love Frank’s “paying attention to things, that’s how we show love” quote. Later when he’s ill, Bill waters the plants and looks after the flowers. Also, if you pause the note that Bill wrote to Joel, he suggests that Joel work with Tess to define their relationship, and offers them his wine collection.
I never thought about the flowers or noticed what else was in the note until now. Not a moment, not a shot wasted in this episode.
Frank shows Love through visualisation, the aesthetics. Bill shows Love through his protectiveness and actions for his loved ones. Bill keeps Frank alive while Frank makes Bill living.
I sobbed so much watching this. These guys were likely early 20s during the AIDS epidemic, survived the apocalypse together, and built a beautiful life. They won. It’s sad to see it end but they went out on their own terms. Truly haven’t seen older gay men get to have a happy ending like this. Meant so much.
And the fact they chose to get married. As when the world ended in 2003 when gay marriage wasn’t legal until 2004 (MA at first) 😢
I'm here to cry again over the best television from the past year, made so Joel could get his hands on a car.
I'm still not over this episode. Been crying for days. One of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen!
It's been 4 days now and Bill and Frank's story has sent me to this bittersweet melancholy.... *sigh
I feel the same way , this is my dream love story, powerful and romantic
I've seen people calling it tragic or sad, but I think it was a happy story. They got to pass in old age, after a long life where they were loved, with agency and dignity. This is something neither queer nor disabled/terminal characters are usually granted in media.
The apocalypse happened in 2003. That is the societal framework they are coming from. One where gay marriage wasn't legal. One where initial meetings were often conducted through coding because being too open, too out, was dangerous. Especially in a small town. Bill probably had more genuine social interaction after the outbreak than beforehand. Because of small town stigma and pre 2003 socially acceptable homophobia. From this perspective the apocalypse gave them a chance at life they may not have gotten otherwise. Bill likely never would have known love. Frank brought beauty to Bill's life. As I have seen others say, Bill and Frank won the apocalypse.
And Bill and Joel became friends. Even if they didn't want to call it that. Mutual repect. Mutual trust. Mutual care for the other. And Joel had the code. Watching Bill's arc was a great way to externalise Joel's internal arc, they are so similar.
The show story is exploring how love and relationships can be toxic. And this was a beautiful juxtaposition to that.
Functionally it didn't change a lot from the game story. Bill and Frank existed. Joel and Ellie got resources. Joel and Ellie still broke down some walls. But, story wise it did add things for the show. A lot of what was cut there will be plenty more of in the show. And game players get to experience something new.
In the context of queer representation in media, including the "kill your gays" trope, I really appreciated this change. And the lack of bodies was really respectful of the story being told - it wasn't a story about their death. It was a story about their life and love.
Sometimes in apocalypse stories you can end up in a place wondering if the world is worth saving. The love story topped off with sprinkling of Ellie's delight at the world and Joel's ability to find purpose and drive again showed that there may be something to fight for.

In addition to Bill and Frank's relationship, another highlight of this episode is showing how Joel is gradually slipping back into "dad mode" without even really noticing it or admitting it, whether it's not wanting Ellie to see the mass grave or helping her put on the seat belt. Even his rules for their journey shows it; while the first rule to not talk about Tess is his old self armoring himself against grief, the latter two rules are meant solely to keep Ellie safe.
When Joel and Ellie arrived, and the door closed gently in the breeze, I felt it was the spirits of Bill and Frank leaving because Joel had arrived safely.

The bridge Ellie and Joel walk over when you said that is actually 7min from my house in Calgary. I run across it every day! Loving the show and your reactions!

Good point, I thought the same thing about the show being shot in Canada, until I realized that America goes from Alaska to Chile/Argentina. lol
But also mention that America has varied climates and forests. Here, in NY state, they could EASILY have replicated each one of those scenes.
However, the budget to film in New York (state and city) would have ballooned to such an obscene amount that it wouldn't make sense. Because, if they're going off the game (geographically)...Jesus! Yeah, the bills are gonna stack up.

They didn't have pancake mix, Joel didn't take the biscuits because he was on Atkins, Sara didn't eat Mrs. Adler's cookies because they had raisins in them, and Joel forgot to pick up the birthday cake. It was a miracle they didn't eat any flour that entire day.
19:12 - Here we learn that Frank's Love Language is "acts of service." Which makes me realize how special that first meal with Bill actually was. The fact he trusted him enough to let him in and literally show love through servive -making him an amazing meal with wine like it was a restaurant. Frank must have already known in that moment. Bill spoke directly to his love language there
I had to turn off the telly to breathe for a moment by the time Frank and Bill were having dinner at the table. My partner had to calm my sobs and the show only got worse when I turned it back on (bloody writers--haha). It really hit close to home. My mom suffered from MS and in the last year of her life, she was paralysed waist down and my dad took care of her like a champ. My dad passed away 5 years ago, 2 years after mum died. He died in his sleep and my sister and I are certain he'd died from a broken heart.
This show mate. ARGH! I've played the game but I wasn't expecting this.
I'm just happy that I've been blessed with very loving parents. And to all the Bills and Franks in the world, clearly they are the lucky ones.
This is such a beautiful episode and it touches so many people so deeply. ❤
That moment when Bill giggled when tasting that strawberry made me burst out a bit and just tear up. Like, even in the rare occurrence of a relatively safe and secured partnership in the aftermath, some simple pleasures still remain to remind you of the older times. Little things to remind you that not everything is just survival. That was such a great gift that Frank had prepared for Bill, and surely something he knew he needed.

I love how in the first episode there are so many instances where they narrowly avoid eating stuff with flour in it. The pancakes, the cake, the biscuits.

This episode slayed me. It was so well crafted all through. Honestly the most beautiful love story I have ever seen on tv. Kudos to the cinematographers, producer, director, and, of course Nick and Murray for Emmy-worthy performances.
The ending also shows Ellie smiling at Joel when they drive away.
And Joel talked and explained a lot to her during the later scenes.
Simply compare that with the beginning of the episode, where he would not talk to her, and barely even looked at her.
They have reached a new milestone in their relationship at the end of the episode.
More important, Joel is smiling at the end, after Ellie does the whole "you've got lame music tastes, but this'll do, Dad" bit. You can see the whole episode is him gradually turning back into a father again, whether he knows it or not.
It's the best hour of television I've seen since "Goodbye, Farewell, & Amen," the final episode of M.A.S.H. in 1983.

And it's so cool how the show is sticking so close to the source material because in the game we knew Bill and Frank were a gay couple but we never got to see their backstory and i someone who has played the game multiple times and love the story more than anything i appreciate how the show really fleshed out their story it was truly amazing to watch

This episode had me in tears. It was absolutely beautiful. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann wrote the episode and Peter Hoar directed. I was truly speechless at the end of the episode.
I would rather watch humans getting whipped in real life like the ol' lynching days, than watch something that is an abomination and un-natural.

The parallel to the infected is Frank here in this episode. The head is clear, but his multiple sclerosis has control over his body. Yes, the infected are aware of their actions, at least in the first stage. In the game, they even cry.
And through this episode we also know that Tess and Joel have known each other for more than 13 years and that they were still "decent" people 7 years after the outbreak. Tess told Ellie that they weren't good people and just before her death she told Joel to do all the shit they did right.
There is a clear indication that Frank was the one who probably killed his original companions. He was like Elly infected with sclerosis fungus and his body resisted it for many years until succumbing.

@@vakhtangkiziria7820 No, Frank escaped with nine other people from the Baltimore QZ when it fell (perhaps was overrun by Infected?) That is a lot of ground to cover on foot and not all of them made it. We don't have the full story but there is *nothing* to make us think Frank did anything to harm his fellow survivors. He wasn't even armed and he isn't a violent person. He was just trying to make it to Boston. They probably got picked off by Infected or raiders along the way.
I just found you guys and absolutely loved your reactions and commentary to this gorgeous episode, which for me is one of the best TV episodes I've ever seen, period. You were both so smart, warm and emotional -- I loved that you caught Frank's paintings around the house, and the little ways his presence had softened Bill's life.
So many little beautiful details in this episode -- the tear on Frank's cheek after Bill plays. Bill's vulnerability and hidden yearning. I love how Frank and Tess mirror each other, and Bill and Joel mirror each other (it moved me to see Tess so young and unbeaten and hopeful -- I wish she and Joel could have moved into the next house!). Or how 10 years later, Bill is watering the flowers -- because he knows they mean something to Frank (sniffle). I was also incredibly moved that they marry each other sitting at the piano that began their romance.

The window scene and Frank not being able to paint Bill are a huge foreshadowing... my god how I love this episode! So many big and small things that have great meaning especially for those who have played both TLOU games.

The beauty of this episode is that it subverts our expectations. We've been conditioned through modern storytelling to fear everything, especially the benign, the innocuous. Dolls, children, children with dolls, dolls that look like children, all manner of seemingly harmless and familiar things, all trying to kill you. We expect that any kindness will be answered with violence, that any trust met with betrayal. We as an audience have been primed to fear the most faithful of friends, the most reliable family members - especially in this particular genre of horror - and when we encounter a story about caring and commitment amongst the ruins of a dying world, we don't know how to process it and it hits hard. "I was not expecting this" seems to be the most common refrain, with good reason. This is ostensibly a series about a 'zombie apocalypse' where anyone and everyone can go from being a kindred soul to a mortal threat in an instant and no one is to be trusted, especially other humans. Yet this particular tale is about trust, and love, both matrimonial and romantic. It's about allowing oneself to be vulnerable and in that vulnerability, finding those moments of existence that are both ephemeral and priceless. We expect a calamity, a personal buskin beyond the destruction of our civilization. We anticipate a type of misfortune that doesn't occur. During the worst catastrophe in the history of human kind, we bear witness the best thing to ever happen to these two humans, and it's profound; jarring. We await a devastation that never comes to pass; that expectation of tragedy is subverted by a story of love. We expect blood and destruction; what we get is a masterpiece about small, beautiful lives lived less ordinary.
This is one of the best stories ever told on film, in my opinion, and it's based on a video game; we've come a long way from Pong.

Random side note: If you want to really devastate yourselves again, think back to the end of the first episode when the 80's song played. It was Depeche Mode's "Never Let Me Down Again". If you read the lyrics, it was very likely Bill's last transmission and he was trying to give a hint as to what was about to happen to him and Frank.

It seems to me that so many people have watched this, and some have commented, but none of them seems to have noticed two things that i picked up. First, the way that Bill says you're welcome, it is clear that he is say you're welcome not as you would say to someone after they take a hamburger from you and they say 'thank you' and you perfunctorily mutter, 'you're welcome'. Bill was saying actually telling Frank that he was welcome to stay. We see this again in my second point which is when Bill sits down to sing, and as he delivers the line 'I've done everything I can, to try and make you...' you can feel his yearning, hoping that Frank will remember the shower that Bill gave him, the new clothing, the wonderful meal and wine. And finally, the gift of music.

It's so interesting to see both the similarities and differences between Tess and Joel's relationship mirrored with Bill and Frank's.
It's like Bill is who Joel would (and could) be if he truly allowed himself to be more open and let love in completely. Yes, it is clear that he does care for Tess greatly but there's also still that part of him that keeps her at arm's length, to avoid getting hurt again. Which is mostly evident when he avoids labelling what they have (When he says "My..." and end's with "Mine" when he's talking to Bill)
By the end of the episode, I couldn't help thinking whether there's some part of Joel that has to wonder if he had let Tess in the way Bill had let Frank in, would things have been different or would the outcome have always been the same?

This episode's theme is Tess's last words "save who you can save" and in the end, the same idea were passed by Bill to Joel in different words. Some people said this episode serves no purpose... it's the opposite, this episode gives some gravity to Tess's last words and Bill's letter. A motivation Joel needs to protect Ellie.

This one is such a tear jerker one for me as well. Excellent dialogue, acting and the amount of details in this one... every thing means something in the end (ie. Ellie taking Frank's gun, the radio signals, the same meal that Bill cooks for Frank).
One thing that no one talks about is the door shutting when Joel is trying to open the locked door. I didn't get it at first, but I think it has to do with the bedroom window open causing air circulation issue. It's such a minor detail that ties to the very last window open scene. Brilliantly done.

The writing, story telling, cinematography, all the details, the acting… It's sad that so many people can't see and appreciate it because of their bigotry. They also tackled toxic masculinity in a great way here, Nick Offerman did such a good job in displaying vulnerability. Having a peaceful Romeo and Juliet ending after about a couple decades of living a very good and fulfilled life… What more can you ask for in a world like they're living in?
