One of the best things about being a Lankum fan is how detailed and generous they are with their influences. The amount of great music I've discovered thanks to them - Barry Gleeson, Frankie Armstrong, and now Luke Cheevers!
If you haven’t yet, give the Fire Draw Near collection a listen. There is a brilliant song sung by Luke Cheevers called ‘Ulysses’ which is astonishing. You would think it is a song as old as time but it’s actually a Scottish folk song written by Robin Laing in 1989. The poem at the beginning is by Simon Armitage. This is the genius of Luke Cheevers. He can adapt songs and poems and make them feel completely timeless. A true folk hero.
