- Drawing from the Well for November 2021 features singer Lisa O'Neill on ARTHUR GRIFFITH - A BALLAD HISTORY OF IRELAND.
Lisa's video premiered online on Wednesday 24 November 2021, at 8 pm (Irish time) on ITMA website, Facebook, UA-cam and IGTV.
"A ballad history is welcome to childhood from its rhymes, its higher colouring and its aptness to memory. As we grow into boyhood and girlhood, the violent passions, the vague hopes, the romantic sorrow of patriot ballads are in tune with our fitful and luxuriant feelings. In adulthood, we prize the dense narrative, the grave firmness, the critical and the political way of ballads. And in old age, they are doubly dear; the companions and reminders of our life, the toys and teachers of our children and grandchildren. Every generation finds its account in them. They pass from mouth to mouth like salutations; even the minds which loose their words are under their influence, as one can recall the starry heavens who cannot revive the form of a single constellation"
- Arthur Griffith, The United Irishman, 02 Jan 1904

Thank you for allowing a great storyteller breathe new life into our nations history through research, preservation and an appreciation of our shared past.
That opening is just like *pow*! Fantastic 💚
Really great, deep depths plumbed, indeed. Thanks so much for this!
Lisa, you are an amazing young woman, thanks for all that information.
That was beautiful!
This woman astound me , Our next McGowan..
Lovely song at the end. A sort of Nanci Griffith meets Luke Kelly sound.
If time was music it would be a drone.
She’s unique
❤️
Great video! What is the instrument that Lisa is playing the drone on?
That's a Shruti box. They're from India but have made their way into trad music recently due to their great droning sound
Check out Norin ni Rinn first one I heard using one of the Shruti boxes
I need to go listen to Ivor cutler now.
Wonderful!
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan would have approved!
You might be looking in the wrong direction. William Rooney is the man to look at. Beaslai's preface suggests that Griffith used 'so many pseudonyms that his writings were difficult to identify'. Griffith didn't use half as many as Rooney, and it's no surprise that Beaslai, with his track record, gets his facts wrong. The Primal Light is probably by Rooney?
Cad é an uirlis ag an tús?
Hyfryd, hyfryd, fel arfer.
