  • Michael Rosbash, director of the Brandeis National Center for Behavioral Genomics, has spent more than three decades studying circadian rhythms, the built-in biological clock that governs functions such as sleep and wakefulness, metabolism and hormone levels, in organisms as simple as fruit flies and as complex as humans.

I want to add that I do appreciate all the good work that Mr. Rosbash and others do researching circadian rhythms. He just got it wrong when it comes to Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome.

Maggie Goodman Hey, I am in UCSF working on FASP. Your description is very interesting and I wonder if you notice there are other family members that are also affected.

+Pei-Ken Hsu Hello, I'm assuming FASP=Familial Advanced Sleep Phase? I have Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder, which is basically the opposite: I go to sleep
really late and get up really late. To answer your question, I think my mom probably had Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder too, but not as bad as mine.
I donated DNA to a UCSF study about Familial Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder and Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder years ago. I'm so glad you are studying this because there are a lot of people out there who have this disorder and would like to know what causes it. As you probably know, one of the worst things about the disorder is that it's poorly understood; people who aren't familiar with it believe that the disorder is just due to bad habits and that we can "fix" ourselves if we just try hard enough. There is a lot of stigma associated with this disorder, and it ends up ruining jobs and relationships.
I don't know if you can use me in the study, but if you can I'd be happy to participate.

Maggie Goodman Yes, I believe it was our lab (Ptacek/Fu Lab) that you donated DNA to. We love to but have not worked on DSP (Delayed Sleep Phase. Btw, we are making an effort to stop call it a "syndrome" but a "phenotype", thus just "delayed sleep phase"). Unfortunately, there is no DSP family documented in our hand at this time (only unrelated individuals like you), making family-based genetic analysis impracticable. Thus, we would love to recruit family that have ASP or DSP (Hence the term "FASP" and "FDSP").
Thank you for the information and hope all is well.

Pei-Ken Hsu I'm involved in various groups for people with DSP and other Circadian Rhythm Disorders. I know a few people who have FDSP (i.e. they have DSP and they have family members with it too.) Do you want me to put you in contact with them?

+Maggie Goodman I almost exactly have the same sleep pattern (timing) as yours while i have noticed it since i was around 6 years old (time to go to pre-school) now i'm in late 30'.
It already hard to live and go on with daily life with this body and it's getting hard and harder when we have to go to work and deal with people's expectation.
My husband once said that - my whole life has been destroying from MY SLEEP PROBLEM, like Maggie mention; social life, career, finance, relationships.
The worst thing to be or to have this DSPS is about dealing with people, social stigma, when people around you said that this can fix by having more discipline....it's just heart breaking words to deal with after 5-10 min. trying to explain to them what i was going through.
(FYI: my sister got it too, my father got it but his time to bed is not too late as us and my mom don't have it at all).
