Yes the allies used many volunteers such as Polish regiments and many other countries, atleast 17 countries were involved in the invasion of Normandy... Most of 'em from occupied countries... They were volunteering
1 of my oldest fam members was an anti Communist volunteer for the Wehrmact he was Norwegian. He spoke 3 languages including his own. He was in a Panzer Grenadier unit.
My father was in the Seige of Stalingrad and the Battle of Narva. My uncle was the same he became a prisoner of war by the Russians in 45 and released in 56. My father returned home with severe injuries.

While there may have been a policy restricting it, you could still get it through other channels. Such as having family members mail it to them. I watched an interview with a German officer that must have been made in the 1960’s. He stated on camera that in the fall of 1944 he was assigned to plan operations for his Panzer Corps part in Watch On The Rhine. Quote; we lived on coffee, cigarettes, and PERVATIN!!!

When they could, the brighter ones managed to sneak away from their units, hide in the Forests, wait till the wave of Shooting has passed through the immediate area, and then surrender to the fighting Infantry rather than waiting for the second-wave of Occupation Troops. Then, while everybody's drunk celebrating VE day, sneak off and run away, get accross a Neutral Border (from Hungary into Switzerland...) work there as a Lumberjack till in 1950 Britain starts importing EuroPeons as Labourers for Welsh Coal Mines - and in 1955 when Germans were permitted to travel then quit Coalmining to get work as a Flourmiller. Every one of them had a different story. The father of a school friend of mine, also Hungarian, hated Communists because Bela Kun's Government had put his father in a Camp as a Counter-Revolutionary, so he volunteered to be a Machine-Gunner in the back seat of a Stuka - for the thrill of shooting the Communists as they tried to bail out of the burning Tank his Pilot had just brewed up with a bomb, during the Climbout, hanging in his Straps. He was being railroaded to Siberia in 1946, for having fought against the Soviets, jumped off the Train, walked to India, married the daughter of a British Colonial Beaurocrat, and came to Oz to work on the Snowy Mountains Scheme. My General Studies teacher, Georges Szonyi, represented Hungary in the 1936 Oh-Limp-Dicks in Discus, Javelin, Heptathlon & Pentathlon...., in 1941 he, " Ven I vas your age I marched mit mein Horse (in an Artillery Regiment), from Berlin to visin 12 Km from Moscow... Von Mellenthin remarked in his book Panzer Battles that one of the great strengths of the Red Army was that once it had established a bridgehead, all efforts to dislodge it would be in vain. I often wonder why The Germans left the Oranienbaum pocket/bridgehead in existence for so long, but perhaps all their efforts were previously unsuccessful. After all, Heeresgruppe Nord was the weakest of all the Heeres Gruppen.
You shouldn't be proud of people who collaborates with literall nazis. I will never understand Belgians, Ukrainians who are proud of their forefathers who fought with not against germans.

I did see a documentary where Carius and a British tank soldier compared the Sherman to Tiger and both agreed that the Tiger was a big, clumsy, mechanically unreliable hunk of junk compared to Sherman. However... when asked which tank they'd prefer to fight in both said immediately "Tiger!" I think that speaks to how both German and Allied soldiers viewed the Sherman.
It’s a great story. I’d like it if you could maybe mention the unit of Tiger Ace Otto Carius and it’s battles at Narva, it would make a great mix with his book Tiger im Schlamm in the back of my head.
High respect for little Otto, however there was another little known Tiger Ace who scored higher than Carius. Can't think of his name right now but he was killed in the Easten Front. I'm sure Ace knows of him.
I am amazed Germany could still move all these units with such low levels of fuel production and if I had been in charge of the German army I would have operated delaying tactics in the east while sending overwhelming infantry forces, planes and tanks to win in the west, then turn back to the east. The war in the west was lost as units advancing to the coast were torn to shreds by the allied air forces yet 900 fighter aircraft remained in Germany in the futile hope that bombing raids could be halted and hundreds more facing the Russians. I would have protected the Ruhr with a chunk of fighters and used the rest of the air force to defend divisions trying to get to Normandy. I feel not as much was done as was possible to stop the invasion.
@liebstandarte jagermeister - I agree and if Hitler had got his stupid face out the way the Generals would have done a lot better. Morally the Germans did not deserve to win but militarily they were hindered terribly by Hitler. One allied general once commented that Hitler's planning was the equivalent of giving 150 divisions to the allies!

The Danish freedom fighters asked the King fir his permission before volunteering to the German/European freedom fighting forces. The Danish king gave his approval. After the war the King didn' t want to know anyhing more of his approval and the Danish volunteered were arrested after their return home thus betrayed by their own King.
Thats right and All the papers from King and government"disappearred" after the war. Freicorr Denmark- Frikorps Danmark, Division Wiking, Sørensen was commander of reg.24 Dänemark last days in Berlin where he died, and get burried on a graveyard, after war hes parents brought hes corpus home and re burried in Viborg Denmark
The number of Dutch volunteers, within the Waffen SS was 22.000. During the battles at the eastern front, 4500 were killed ;over 6000 taken prisoner by the russians and from all remaning survivers around 1/3 stayed to live permanently in Germany after the war, most of them fearing the national anger in their home country. Almost all returning home, faced captivity by dutch military courts for some time. In general they were regarded as traitors and became outcasts , having great difficulty to pick up their lives. The amount of 25.000 volunteers on a population of 10 mio in 1940 , is about the same percentage volunteers as seen in Denmark and dutch speaking Belgium( Vlaanderen). Their reasons to join the WaffenSS were quite varied, but common factors were low education, unemployment , adventure seeking and of course for ideological reasons .
Well, they were more to the South East of Leningrad, near Wolchow. This series is more focused on the 3rd SS Panzer Corps which was to the north near the Gulf of Finland.

It's a specialized trench plough, used by engineers. It looks like the trenches it creates, are futher digged out by a RAD unit (or HiWis or SS Frontarbeiter)
I don't really do that for multiple reasons. The front line changed so much that it was very difficult to track the exact line from day to day. Also the front line at Gatsjina and other parts held by Wehrmacht units was difficult to trace. I didn't want to guess so I decided to leave it out and use the unit symbols instead.
There is so much ignorance of the Wehrmacht's fighting retreat from the USSR that its almost criminal. Say what you want about the Nazi regime, this is an unsung achievement of a badly outclassed defender. I feel for the soldiers on both sides.

At 07:50 you claim Soviet Air-Ground attacks increased but you used footage of 2 German Stuka dive bombers instead of VVS units. Really? Come on and get your shit together and do real and what make for a historical video and accurate. But don't splice in German footage and claim it as Soviet, that's just cheesy and a low class historian.
First of all, I have never called myself a historian. Secondly, it was the only footage of planes I had in which they flew over a snowy country. I doubted between using footage a soviet plane flying in plain summer or German footage flying in winter. Since this battle was fought in deep snow I chose the latter as it blended-in with the time-frame.
Oh, sorry, I thought it was. I read that there were a few large battles there before WW2 and that there were a few medieval castles so I presumed it was a historic city in Estonia.
@@TheAceDestroyer Estonia could not have anything "historic" by that time for it's own history counted little more than 20 years. As to Narva town itself it was founded by Danes and further on periodically belonged to Novgorod, Livonian Order , Sweden and Russia Empire.

1942, '43 should have been the year the Germans organised, trained and equipped the nearly 500,000 assorted Hiwi's/Ostlegionaires such as the RLA, RONA, XV Cossack Corps etc given their severe manpower shortages and inability to man the entire front line in depth. Ironically the former commander of the 2nd Shock army and Deputy Volkhov Front commander Andrey Vlasov would have proved an invaluable resource had him and his 250,000 strong force been taken seriously before late 1944.
Drafted to the Waffen-SS only a few days after his 17th birthday, my uncle would end up dying less than three months after his conscription as radio operator in the 54th Signals Company under the 4th SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Brigade "Netherlands" (4. SS-Freiwilligen-Panzergrenadier-Brigade "Nederland") of the 3rd SS Panzer Corps, while the brigade was retreating towards Narva in the final January days of 1944. As he was German, it shows that the brigade was not only composed of Dutch and also not only of volunteers. Initially, my uncle was declared Missing in Action and my grandma was hoping for his return home for decades. In April 1945, even her nine-year-old son got killed while US troops advanced on my home village.

My great grandfather fell there on 8th of June 1944 serving in the Nordland-Division, though he was native german.
He belonged to an elite Waffenbrüderschaft, one which inflicted 6 casualties upon the Bolsheviks for every casualty that they themselves suffered.
I recently have a Patient who was Tank Commander and member of the Nordland Division. He is native German AS well, but from czech Republik.

The Danish freedom fighters asked the King fir his permission before volunteering to the German/European freedom fighting forces. The Danish king gave his approval. After the war the King didn' t want to know anyhing more of his approval and the Danish volunteered were arrested after their return home thus betrayed by their own King.

Freicorr Denmark- Frikorps Danmark, Division Wiking, Sørensen was commander of reg.24 Dänemark last days in Berlin where he died, and get burried on a graveyard, after war hes parents brought hes corpus home and re burried in Viborg Denmark

The number of Dutch volunteers, within the Waffen SS was 22.000. During the battles at the eastern front, 4500 were killed ;over 6000 taken prisoner by the russians and from all remaning survivers around 1/3 stayed to live permanently in Germany after the war, most of them fearing the national anger in their home country. Almost all returning home, faced captivity by dutch military courts for some time.
In general they were regarded as traitors and became outcasts , having great difficulty to pick up their lives.
The amount of 25.000 volunteers on a population of 10 mio in 1940 , is about the same percentage volunteers as seen in Denmark and dutch speaking Belgium( Vlaanderen).
Their reasons to join the WaffenSS were quite varied, but common factors were low education, unemployment , adventure seeking and of course for ideological reasons .

Well, they were more to the South East of Leningrad, near Wolchow. This series is more focused on the 3rd SS Panzer Corps which was to the north near the Gulf of Finland.

What were the discs being passed around at the 2:43 mark?
They are boxes of Scho-ka-kola, a famous German chocolate brand. The boxes were often used in German military rations. I think they still use those circular boxes as packaging today. Here's their website: www.scho-ka-kola.de/homepage-english.html

I think it's a plough of some sort. Something agricultural at least.
It's a specialized trench plough, used by engineers. It looks like the trenches it creates, are futher digged out by a RAD unit (or HiWis or SS Frontarbeiter)
It's quite interesting. It's not something I've ever seen mentioned in books about WW2 vehicles.

I don't really do that for multiple reasons. The front line changed so much that it was very difficult to track the exact line from day to day. Also the front line at Gatsjina and other parts held by Wehrmacht units was difficult to trace. I didn't want to guess so I decided to leave it out and use the unit symbols instead.

There is so much ignorance of the Wehrmacht's fighting retreat from the USSR that its almost criminal. Say what you want about the Nazi regime, this is an unsung achievement of a badly outclassed defender. I feel for the soldiers on both sides.

At 07:50 you claim Soviet Air-Ground attacks increased but you used footage of 2 German Stuka dive bombers instead of VVS units. Really? Come on and get your shit together and do real and what make for a historical video and accurate. But don't splice in German footage and claim it as Soviet, that's just cheesy and a low class historian.
First of all, I have never called myself a historian. Secondly, it was the only footage of planes I had in which they flew over a snowy country. I doubted between using footage a soviet plane flying in plain summer or German footage flying in winter. Since this battle was fought in deep snow I chose the latter as it blended-in with the time-frame.

Oh, sorry, I thought it was. I read that there were a few large battles there before WW2 and that there were a few medieval castles so I presumed it was a historic city in Estonia.

As to Narva town itself it was founded by Danes and further on periodically belonged to Novgorod, Livonian Order , Sweden and Russia Empire.

1942, '43 should have been the year the Germans organised, trained and equipped the nearly 500,000 assorted Hiwi's/Ostlegionaires such as the RLA, RONA, XV Cossack Corps etc given their severe manpower shortages and inability to man the entire front line in depth. Ironically the former commander of the 2nd Shock army and Deputy Volkhov Front commander Andrey Vlasov would have proved an invaluable resource had him and his 250,000 strong force been taken seriously before late 1944.

Drafted to the Waffen-SS only a few days after his 17th birthday, my uncle would end up dying less than three months after his conscription as radio operator in the 54th Signals Company under the 4th SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Brigade "Netherlands" (4. SS-Freiwilligen-Panzergrenadier-Brigade "Nederland") of the 3rd SS Panzer Corps, while the brigade was retreating towards Narva in the final January days of 1944. As he was German, it shows that the brigade was not only composed of Dutch and also not only of volunteers. Initially, my uncle was declared Missing in Action and my grandma was hoping for his return home for decades. In April 1945, even her nine-year-old son got killed while US troops advanced on my home village.
