JP and Amelia ... keep in mind that despite those gorgeous hilltop views, during the rainy season -- and that coastal region has one, more so than Salinas -- the roads can be muddy and slick if not paved over. My wife, our toddler and I took a week long trip to montanita while visiting Cuenca to see if we want to move back in Sept. We walked to Olon one morning via the highway while pushing the stroller. Fantastic video - great info well delivered. Given you lived in Colorado for a number of years doesn't the humidity bother you in Olon? Is there a site you would recommend for expats to find places to live (rent/purchase)especially in coastal Ecuador? Does one have to travel to Salinas, Cuenca or Guyaquil every time they have to go to a physician, dentist or eye doctor? Clearly, I need to make a visit and explore for myself - just a bit concerned if there were an emergency I might have to travel some distance if I select a quieter coastal village. Apologies for my ignorance. Thank you again for sharing great data!
The humidity is a bit overwhelming, but not how you think. We're in the winter months now so the temps are in the 70s F but it's so humid that everything is mildewing. We never feel completely dry! If you want to live closer to a real hospital and all the other medical services, we recommend Salinas/La Libertad or Manta or one of the smaller towns near there. It's an hour to La Libertad from Olón. Playas is an hour from Guayaquil so even that is pretty far from a real hospital.
