  • Straight up, this is probably the easiest way to enter into some really interesting chord territory. That being said, this is just one method of many that you could use. Hope it helps!

@@xxthe_rainxx7445I understand that you’re saying this because it’s called “music theory” but I really feel like the concepts covered in this video are empirical in nature

trevor you’ve honestly inspired me to take playing guitar seriously again. i never really went in depth with learning all the technicalities of guitar but i’ve been watching so many of your videos so i can try to get a better understanding. thank you for doing these :)

I feel similar, but it’s more in the way that this made me realize if I’m going to play such beautiful and complex music, I need to learn equally beautiful and complex theory and technique so I better step my shit up LMAO 💀

I just learned if I’m gonna play beautiful music, I REALLY gotta know my shit like the back of my hand, this is amazing motivation to dive into the more “boring” aspects of the craft because it’s giving such accessible and evidential steps and guidelines to turn what would usually be considered boring into something fun and gorgeous

My first time coming across your channel! Great explanation! I modify my chords like this all the time but easily lose sight of what to even call the chord anymore.

    • @BauKim

Learning a bit of music theory to name the chords just takes a bit of mental practice once you know the rules, about two weeks of learning about chord formations. But if you're doing this for yourself as long as you remember the chord to the name you give it, that's all that matters.

I know I'm a bit late, but have you heard of Oolimo? It's a free website with a digital fretboard that allows you to input notes to get the name of whatever chord those notes form together.
If you're frequently modifying shapes in order to get a moving bass line and want to know the technical name of those chords, I can't recommend anything better than Oolimo.
I am not a bot or a shill, just a very happy user of the site. It's a huge help

I hear the gusto, but I feel playing the progression with a gentler inflection like in the tutorial and some melodic accents will put you right into Midwest emo/math rock territory, i.e. Clever Girl.
Once you go above 3 tones and you really start strumming, even clean bright tones can get washed out.

  • @denmarkball7728

Hey man, I appreciate the effort but I didn't really learn anything. The reason is that this is more of a "tutorial" on how to play one particular progression rather than discussing the philosophy and harmonic action (IDK english term but I mean the interaction between the chords). What I got from this was one maj7 chord in different grips (again forgot english term, I'm referring to the order of the notes in the chord)?? Surely there's more to it than just variations of one maj7
