Nice job! I recently saved one of a different style that had a guillotine style head catch in it and let them out of the left side and updated it. I cut the old head catch out of it (saved it to mount on a shop wall as an antique) and I welded in a new 91 model Priefert head gate. I kinda hated to butcher it but I felt like the side release was more dangerous than a pass through head gate so I changed it. I needed to use it for cattle so safety was top priority.

I'm sure the Priefert head gate is an improvement.

Well, its obvious its been there awhile! That tree that was growing thru it has a few years on age on it! Looks like a nice little chute, its amazing that any of the moving parts were not froze fast

thanks, it's amazing how long steel lasts as long as there is no standing water.

I saw your cattle working video which led me to this. I'm going to restore my grandfather's headgate. What did you do to knock all the rust off of your chute? Beadblaster, hours of sandpaper, sanding blocks? Thanks in advance. Great job, BTW.

Thank you. I mostly used a sandblaster filled with coal slag instead of sand. Good luck with your project.

Nice, I just picked up an old chute (will be my first) that I will be working on. Question on something else though, where did you pick up the FCI sign in your shop? lol

I saw it in the back of a junk trailer. I caught up to the two guys, flagged them down, and bought it in a Sonic parking lot for $60.

…What’s the name of the music I think it’s the Moldau? We have one that is nearly completed, we didn’t have all the same tools you did.

Music is the William Tell Overture. Good luck with your chute

That looks just like a homemade chute my dad purchased on a sale. Its frozen on the top bar though that controls the head gate. My question for you- Is the bottom floor opening wide enough for most angus cows to stand in, especially if they're pregnant? The one we have looks like it would have been used 4 calves last. Thanks

Yes, it's wide enough. About a foot wide at the bottom. Mine's adjustable but I've never moved it. I put an 8th month Angus mama cow through it last month

What make and model was that chute? I still have one just like it???

Sorry, I have no idea. My Great Aunt bought sometime probably in the 60's or 70's. Dad had a swing tail gate lying in the scrap pile he said was for It but I could never figure out how it worked. Do you have the tail gate?

Lewis Renovation Yes I’ve got one, and it’s complete. I’ll send you detailed pics and a video to show you. I have a question though regarding the “pull and lock” mechanism. Could you send me a detailed view of how the sprocket locks? Mine doesn’t lock- you pull the rope, it clicks, but it won’t stay in place.
Send me an email address so I can send you some pics of the complete chute I have here. Thanks!
