One thing that was on my list, and that I did pack, but accidentally skipped over when reading you my list was hangers! There are hangers provided for you in the closets on the ship, but only like 8, whereas there was a lot of extra closet space... my reccomendation is to bring another 8 or so hangers because they will totally fit in your closet, and allow you to store more things in there!
I just wanted to say thanks for all your SAS videos! They've really been a help and in a way made me more excited. I'm hoping to apply for the gap year program in 2023, which is definitely a ways off but I'm sure the wait will be worth it!
you’re so welcome! i love hearing that people are going on future voyages ☺️☺️ and you can apply as soon as that voyage is listed on the SAS website, so that might be sooner than you think 👀 i definitely recommend applying earlier rather than later!
yeah! i’ve made one for costa rica ua-cam.com/video/k-frGDv54BA/v-deo.html with prices and activities included, and plan on making more eventually for other countries!!
Can you like sell your textbooks to the ship store at the end of the voyage when classes are over? That way you don’t have to take them back home if you have hard copies
they didn’t do that on my voyage :// they should’ve though! a lot of people ended up recycling them which is too bad, or trying to donate them to the ship. i wish we could’ve sold them back!
Ong, thank you so much for your videos , I have been following you since 60 subs and now you are so much bigger , love the video ,is their nutella on the ship by any chance ?
No there isn't nutella :( But that'd be such a fun thing for you to pack if you love it! Like the people who packed peanut butter... but you could pack nutella!
ua-cam.com/video/MFRruqE1QgE/v-deo.html here's one that i made about coming back to the ship after being in port and everything you need to know about that, let me know if you have any other specific questions!
I feel like it's a thing to use pencils in american universities? We always use pens because anyone can just erase things if you write in pencil and we're actually not allowed haha
okay so true!! pencils must be more of an american thing, haha i never knew that. be sure to bring at least one though because with the specific tests/bubble sheets we have to fill out sometimes only work with pencil... and i have no idea why!
yep! when you get to the docks where you check in and go through security and all that your bags get left at the first check point and they’ll be in your room when you board the ship! that’s super nice because my bags were pretty HEAVY!
Do you recommend leaving your cell phone on airplane mode while you're in other countries? How did you manage to avoid excessive roaming fees/charges while abroad?
i used AT&T’s international plan, which cost me $10 a day when i used data - that meant that even i used data for 5 minutes, i would be charged the whole $10. so i kept my phone on airplane mode on the ship so that if we passed by land i wouldn’t be charged! and then when we were on land i had airplane mode off nearly every day because i used my phone for maps/texting/instagram, etc.
and i think you have around a total of 35 days in countries? so using it every time would cost you about $350. if you want to lower that price you can always have a friend use data one day and map everything for you guys, then you can use yours the next day and that’ll cut the costs!!
i definitely knew people who did! the reason they say not to bring tape is because they have strict rules about you not sticking anything to the walls of your cabin. but you can bring it if it’s just for journaling - just don’t pack it in your carry on and you should be good!
two! that’s the maximum, and then you can have a backpack and a small personal item (like a purse). so i had one rolling suitcase and one soft sided one that could fold up to fit under my bed!
i didn’t know what semester at sea was or plan anything until 5.5 months before my voyage embarked. i applied on a whim, totally spontaneously, and the voyage was almost full. i put every other cabin type that was cheaper before the outside double, but still got assigned the outside double because that was all that was left
that’s why i tell everyone to sign up for a voyage as soon as you know you want to go, a year or two in advance, so you can save yourself the most money possible!
I would say that a big difference is thinking about what you'll miss out on at home; with the fall voyage you miss out on more holidays and family events than you do in the spring, and if those are really important to you then I would reccomend going on the spring voyage! I think that the weather between the two is pretty comparable because we stay on the equator for most of the trip, where the weather is always pretty sunny and warm.
And while I can't say this for sure, I know that many countries in South America and Asia experience a rainy season closer to the spring half of the year, but I haven't heard of anyone experiencing a voyage where it rained the whole time. I think either semester would be great!
Are you able to store stuff under your bed? Curious how much space you have on the voyage, I hear its limited. I want to bring my soft-top surfboard for fall 2021 it's 7 feet tall + wet suit.
yes i think that’d fit... one of the beds has better storage than the other, because one has life jackets under it, so you’d have to share with your roommate...
i would recommend bringing both if you can! sometimes one won’t work because your bank will flag it as being in a different country, and you don’t want to be stuck without a source of money! also, you could always leave one in your room on the boat so it’s safe if you accidentally lose the other one while traveling, or if it gets stolen
but i usually used a debit card for getting money from an atm and buying things within the country! just check to see if your card will get charged for purchases abroad, because some cards have hidden fees that will charge you every time you use it or withdraw money!
okay i had one class where i used the textbook every time we went to class, one where we used the textbook literally once, and one where we used it... twice? and then for global studies they assigned readings but the exams weren’t based on those readings so it wasn’t super necessary to have it.
also, the class where i used the textbook everyday actually had that textbook in the library, so i had a friend who did not buy it and was fine because she just used the one in the library to do her homework!

As you can see, there is a $6000 difference in tuition depending on what type of cabin you choose (and I will be posting a video about the cabin choices on the ship in a day or two!)

this video was super helpful, but can we also appreciate how pretty jess looks with this hairstyle!!

Can you do a video about what you did roughly each day in each country please, it would be so interesting!
yeah! i’ve made one for costa rica ua-cam.com/video/k-frGDv54BA/v-deo.html with prices and activities included, and plan on making more eventually for other countries!!
LOVE THIS! Hope to see you spring 2021!

Can you do a detailed video about being in ports? Love you videos btw they are a lot of help!!!

here's one that i made about coming back to the ship after being in port and everything you need to know about that, let me know if you have any other specific questions!

Hi!! Are you allowed to bring dry shampoo in your luggage? I live off that stuff! Love you!
i think you can!! tons of people brought that :)
Do they bring your bags up for you/ have a concierge on move in day?
yep! when you get to the docks where you check in and go through security and all that your bags get left at the first check point and they’ll be in your room when you board the ship! that’s super nice because my bags were pretty HEAVY!

Do they sell toiletries on the ship?
yep, you can find shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, sunscreen and stuff like that on the ship!!
so you’ll be able to buy replacements if you need them
Can give a link for your google doc in the description?
Yes! Just did it :)
@@jessshorst I dont see the link for the google doc, do you still have it? I know its pretty old now haha
What room type did you have?
i didn’t know what semester at sea was or plan anything until 5.5 months before my voyage embarked. i applied on a whim, totally spontaneously, and the voyage was almost full. i put every other cabin type that was cheaper before the outside double, but still got assigned the outside double because that was all that was left

Is there a huge difference between Fall/Spring voyages? Is the weather better for one or is one voyage "better" than the other?
I would say that a big difference is thinking about what you'll miss out on at home; with the fall voyage you miss out on more holidays and family events than you do in the spring, and if those are really important to you then I would reccomend going on the spring voyage! You should be a professional packer for travel abroad!
That would be a crazy job for sure, I bet people would be unhappy if I forgot to pack them something important like toothpaste.
Are you able to store stuff under your bed? Curious how much space you have on the voyage, I hear its limited. I want to bring my soft-top surfboard for fall 2021 it's 7 feet tall + wet suit.
yes i think that’d fit... one of the beds has better storage than the other, because one has life jackets under it, so you’d have to share with your roommate...
but i honestly don’t know if they allow you to bring surf boards?? you’ll need to check the prohibited item list first!!
Should I bring a Debit or Credit card?
i would recommend bringing both if you can! sometimes one won’t work because your bank will flag it as being in a different country, and you don’t want to be stuck without a source of money! also, you could always leave one in your room on the boat so it’s safe if you accidentally lose the other one while traveling, or if it gets stolen

how do u post so often!?
ha lol i am *bored*
i do homework for as long as i can, and then need to find literally anything else to do, and filming is more fun than homework!
haha so am I
Is it mandatory to buy textbooks? I know for my current classes I never use the textbook but they're superrrr expensive
okay i had one class where i used the textbook every time we went to class, one where we used the textbook literally once, and one where we used it... twice? and then for global studies they assigned readings but the exams weren’t based on those readings so it wasn’t super necessary to have it.
also, the class where i used the textbook everyday actually had that textbook in the library, so i had a friend who did not buy it and was fine because she just used the one in the library to do her homework!
maybe you could put it off, and then if you NEED them download an online version later on?? it is super expensive, and that’s soooo annoying, i agree!
i was wondering if you could pair up with someone who bought it and then split the cost by taking pictures of the pages you need lol
How much do you have to pay overall to go on semester at sea, I'm thinking about going but I can't find how much it's overall
