THE LATHE KNIFE: SKEW KILLER, GAME CHANGER?

- This is my take on a traditional Russian chisel called a Lathe Knife. The video shows how I use it, why I like it and how I made it...
...I like it more than my skew ...
If you are interested in owning one or similar, let me know. I plan on making a few to sell on Etsy.
Watch these guys use the tool way better than me!

Beautiful handle, seems proportional. Patient and gentle cuts win the day. Appreciate.
Excellent video. I’ve seen a few Russian woodturning videos were they have used this tool. And it is an awesome tool. Thanks for sharing.
WOW I would love to try some of the knives
Thanks for showing
What a great tool.Find its sweet spot and away you go.I spent five hours today on spindle work with crisp details.I even managed small coves and roll beads,a task I'd struggle with using the skew.I'm blown away. Thanks Colin for bringing this to You Tube.Give up the day job !
Yep, I've seen those same videos. Definitely going to give it a try.
Brilliant, seems to polish the work as well. Good stuff. Cheers
Another excellent video Colin. I would certainly be interested in buying one with or without handle, it looks a very versatile tool. Keep up the good work!
John Sandland cheers John!
I have been fascinated by these for a while and have wondered why they are (apparently) not popular here in the US. Your demonstration makes me want one now! Thanks for the info...
Cheers Jimmie, let me know if I can help bud.
Gracias por compartir, genial video para hacer herramientas para el torno, saludos !!
That’s a very interesting tool - thanks for the info.
Awesome video. Thank you. I’m off to the shop to start making one.
Crustyswede1 awesome!
brilliant piece of work Colin
Wayne the Woodturner cheers Wayne!
Opps just saw it Cant wait to see it soon on your page
An extremely interesting video and something that I would like to have a go at making.
Cheers, Bram
Bram the Wadesmill woodturner cheers bud!
Супер резец, всё на высшем уровне!!! Лайк!!!
exelente nunca vi. maravillosa herramienta..mucho gusto en conocerte gracias por compartir .muy didáctico extraordinariamente útil.
Wow that's an awesome piece of kit. 🙂
Miss Tee's Woodturning cheers Miss Tee!
Cool, the way the wood moves during certain cuts reminds me of working with clay on the pottery wheel. I just need to install the belt and bearing kit on a shop smith I bought, then try my first wood turning! I’ll want to get one of your knives for sure.
PNW Dave thanks bud!
This type of tool appears ideally suited to making as a cutting tip insert.
It seems a game changer. I'll be making one this spring.
Would it also agile with hardwood?
Impressive, I'm interested in owning one when you go into production.
This is fantastic, well done! I too would like to purchase a lathe knife, just like the one you used in your demo. I can't find your Etsy page, though. Can you please let me know where I can be put on the waiting list for one of these?
That tool looks great
Yes! Finally someone else who discovered the Russian technology. I was so amazed when I saw the Russian guy turn out like 4 end grain bowls in 10 mins. Next can you try to replicate what they did with the bowl cutting tools? When they cut on the opposite side of the bowl.
Mattis Sloyd they hook tool, yeah... my next project!
Looking forward to seeing the knife for sale on your Etsy page!
Cheers,
DAn
Daniel Emanuele hi bud, yes more will be on there by Sunday evening, 24th. Thanks!
Great video.
What might be a better way to temper would be heating a chunk of steel red hot and laying it on the back of the blade not too close to the point.
You might have better control of the colors running toward the edge.
Love this tool.
Pierre Nadeau cheers bud!
very cool .
Bravissimo complimenti, ora che ho visto l'efficienza dell'attrezzo me lo faccio ,grazie
great tutorial thank you
I will definitely be ordering one
Mick Wilton cheers Mark. More advertised weekly on my Etsy page.
etsy.me/2GzEMWL
Cheers bud.
Thanks that was inspirational.
Yes please - I'd be interested in the version with a handle.
Steve Purkiss cheers bud!
thanks!!!
Very interesting. Thanks for posting.
I may have to make one of these. I have some scrap 1/8in (3.2mm) thick x 8in dia (20.3cm) HSS saw blades which I can cut up to make the blade.
Your angle looks like about 45 deg. The Russian fellows knives look to be more like 60 deg angle and with a curve.
The Russian fellows make it look so easy to use these tools. They likely have been using them a long time.
Dave.
LV_Woodturner yeah go for it. My round bar is 16mm dia, the point is 30 degrees, the straight blunt edge is 40mm, the sharp edge is 50mm, thickness of blade is 4mm
To improve, thinner blade stock, 3mm or less, shorter blade....say 35mm or so, sharper point angle a slightly...say 28 degrees or so and 14mm round bar stock.
Thanks bud!
Col enjoyed your video but I have a non related question where did you get the initial coins made up? are they stick on or you glue it on? are they metallic stamped coins? or labels? Kind regards Jack Marashlian
Very fascinating. That dropped heel looks to be very powerful.
I saw one of those Russian video's where a big Russian lady was turning doll shapes using a long knife like that, like corporal Jones with his bayonet..... Essentially a tough little sloyd knife on a bar. You could use guage plate to make them. I once used it to make a couple of plane irons.
Perhaps you could try a mini tin can forge to get better heat (lined with ceramic wool) Uses up less gas! Or you could use lengths of old coil springs and forge the knife edge on one end? Or use a single round bar with a allen key grub screw where you could put different sized blades into a slot? Great video anyway, Best of Luck with your efforts
GOLDSMITHEXILE 2016 cheers bud! Many of your comments I have already done... the little tin can forge and I’m looking into changeable tips. I have a later video where you can see the can forge lol. Thanks bud, I appreciate your helpful ideas!
No problem I just got this recommended in my feed this morning, never seen yours before....most "recommended" vid's are duff but yours was thoroughly enjoyable I'll look at others of yours, just went back to some Russian bowl turner vid's, they love there cup chucks.
I set up a tin can furnace to make bent knife blades and adze blades for carving, very liberating to make your own stuff!@@CLWoodturning
It will be interesting to see reactions and how it develops.
Nice 👍
I am looking to make one myself but would like to know the angles of the skew head. I will be making one with a 1.5 inch base of the 90 degree triangle. any help would be appreciated
Thanks, Colin. When they’re ready can you send me a link to your Etsy page? For some reason I’m not finding it now. Strange. Gotta be something I’m doing. Cheers, Dan
Daniel Emanuele here it is bud.... won’t be long for more up there. etsy.me/2GzEMWL
I would definitely like one as well!
Fascinating!!! How hot does the lathe knife get from all that friction?
Saar Tal to be honest I have not noticed any heat, there must be but since the tool slices clean there is little friction. Compared to my other gouges, way less heat with this tool.
Looks like a tool i should have but how can i buy one from you, the link didn't work. thanks
That pretty nice tool it's like a fillet knife 4 Wood
Very interesting, liked and subbed, thanks.
Gareth Martin thanks Gareth.
Yes please let me know when you have them on sale in Etsy, I have an account and would like to purchase one.
jorge cordero thanks Jorge, this is my Etsy page. etsy.me/2GzEMWL
I love it and would like to purchase one 4mm with a handle is this possible. Great tool and I like it's Versatility
Don&Michele Brown hi thank you, sure, I post when I complete them to sell on my Etsy page. If you fav the shop you should be notified of any available. Thank you! Colin
An excellent video....your DIY knife works beautifully, but, having just watched a Russian woodturner using one, I note that the knife had been forged from steel bar....a much easier method surely?
TOY MAKER oh indeed but I don’t have a large forge. However, I’ve moved on to make The Evolution, beyond what we see in Russia and needs no forging really... you may have seen but if not, ua-cam.com/video/KGpIOnlgw7g/v-deo.html
Thank you!
Colin
I sure like it! I am turning earrings, and a small knife tool would be perfect for detailing. Please let me know if you would make one on the small end and price.
Frank Scott I could make a really small one sure... mail me if you want.... clwoodturning@icloud.com First one I made was quite small...only about 15mm blade length, curved blade.
Frank Scott hi bud, I’m posting two ‘micro’ lathe knives on my Etsy page in a few minutes, just in case you like the size for the work you do. Cheers, Colin
Get a really polished finish with a tool like that. I do think that one could regrind a standard skew to form the same cutting edge but there wouldn't be the over hang on the heal. What cutting speed are you using? With something like that a slow speed keeps the edge longer. One caution, however is that one must be very careful with the point as it can dig in and cause a terrible blow out and possible injury.
Dick Martin hi Dick, yes reforming a standard skew may not give you the heel form of this one. I cut between 700 and 1200 rpm depending on the wood and shape etc. As for accidents, if the wood hits the sharp edge the worst that happens is a ‘skate’ up or down the piece. If you plough into the wood point first, blade down then yes could be nasty but I’ve never done it. Blade up and you can address the piece point first without any issue. Thank you for your comments.
Saturday 2nd March: new tools available on my Etsy including an option to buy ‘Made to Order’. Tools are both full size on 16mm bar, 50cm long or a Micro Detail version on 8mm bar, and anything between 20-30 cm long. If you choose make to order you can ask for a curved blade rather than standard straight. Thanks!
etsy.me/2GzEMWL
Colin
How would you use one with a curved blade and can this tool be used for hollowing?
Temper it in a kitchen oven 220 for 1 hr. Great idea thanks. Kev.
Kevin Morgan yes bud, subsequent builds have been tempered as you say. Thanks man.
I would be very interested in purchasing one or two depending on price. I checked Etsy and couldn’t find it
I seem to remember the German ring turned animal makers use something similar but with a curved cutting edge, either that or I was dreaming.
Chris Stephens hi bud, yeah they sometimes can have a curved cutting edge, I’ve made those too as a request for a few people.
pretty cool.
gmanlipripper cheers man!
Opa

Interested in buying a lathe knife. Pete
I’m interested
UPDATE: I have managed to make 8 Lathe Knives so far, 4 with 14mm shafts, 4 with 18mm shafts. Handles will go on tomorrow (hopefully). Slightly improved design too. I’ll keep making them if peeps want them. Thanks so much for all the great comments! CL
etsy.me/2GzEMWL
What angle is the edge. Looks like 60* ?
Patti & Eddie Azevedo which angle? The point is around 30*, the cutting edge bevel angle is around 30* also. Happy to measure any dimension and let you know, can you give more detail?
This tool looks amazing, what do you make them out of?. I would like to make one.
Robbo it’s in the video but shaft is stainless steel 16mm, blade is hardened and tempered 01 tool steel, handle hardwood. They are awesome. I have them for sale on my Etsy page in two sizes
etsy.me/2GzEMWL
Go for it making one, just ask if you need a hand.
how can i get 1
I too saw the nesting dolls video and wondered about the knives those ladies used. I guess I’m late to the party though as it seems your Etsy shop is closed. Are you out of the Lathe knife business for good or is this a pandemic pause?
I'd like to try this tool out. Where can I purchase one right away?
Boy those Russians are quite clever.Tony from Canada 🇨🇦
Nice Job, I would be interested in getting one of these un-handled. Can you ship to Canada?
Michel The woodturner sure Michel, I’ve had orders to Canada. Takes a few weeks. I’ve just finished a batch with handles, will take a week for next load. Is that ok? Thank you. My email is clwoodturning@icloud.com if you’d prefer rather than my Etsy page.
I just found your UA-cam sight. I checked your store and it seems your lathe knifes sell out immediately. Can you tell me the price in US and I’ll try to check your sight first thing Saturday morning.
Edward Bodenmiller hi Edward, sorry you have missed out so far. With handle they are £50 and shipping to US is £25 with UPS. If you favourite the shop then you will be notified of new posts. Mail me too if you wish and we can work outside of Etsy if it helps. Clwoodturning@icloud.com
Thank you, Colin
etsy.me/2GzEMWL
This looks great - I would buy one. Can you let me know where and when I can purchase?
Rob Hardie hi Rob, I post several new tool on my Etsy page each Saturday/Sunday after working on them through the week.
etsy.me/2GzEMWL
If you favourite the shop you should be notified of new posts.
Thanks bud, Colin
@@CLWoodturning thanks Colin, I'll do that. Much appreciated
have you tries High speed steel? it should stay sharp longer , just a thought
Anthony newsome yes Anthony I have some HSS which I could use but following correct hardening and tempering the flat stock is just as good. I not temper in an oven and have really good results. Thanks!
`hello ! Which steel do you use ?
ho ... You are showing it later in the video. Thanks :)
Blades are from several knife steels like 1095, Niolox or 1075+Cr... thanks
How do I obtain one of the replaceable head types? I tried the Etsey link on your other video, but I didn't lead to your store.
Michael Gross try this link, I have several items available but this is direct to The Evolution (I think lol!)
etsy.me/2T4w9G2
Thank you!
Adding any to the shop this weekend Colin?
Captain G yes bud, will be several this evening and more Sunday evening. Thank you!
Where do you get your maker marks that I see in the end of the handle?
Joel Jennings hi Joel I sent my designs to the eBay seller below and he was fantastic. Came quickly despite overseas post.
I was able to specify two different designs, two diameters and on different acrylic discs (gold and silver). Really cool bloke!
rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F282852601760
this Knife is very good...!
Joachim Müller cheers bud!
@@CLWoodturning cheers...Mister
Not a lot of steel to sharpen. I’d be interested to see how long it lasts with repeated sharpening.
Bill Gunnett I see your point, thing is you only need to use a standard kitchen knife sharpener or similar which removes very little metal to true up the cutting edge. If you attack a bench grinder with the tool you would sure grind the blade away.
Interesting tool. What’s the link to your Etsy shop?
Greg Just cheers Greg. My Etsy is here: etsy.me/2GzEMWL I won’t have any of these tools for sale for a week or so. However, some will be handled, some tool only.
WOW that was a cool tool made. weldon.
MANJIT SINGH thanks man!
Are these lathe knives available commercially locally? Or does one need to make one’s own?
charles ball I had to make mine as they are not available by any mass companies. I will be making some and selling on my Etsy page: www.etsy.com/shop/CLWoodturningStore
Thank you
Здорово. Если это быстрорез то поперечно не варят, может лопнуть при работе. А так всё отлично
Hi Colin this is a fantastic tool and I’d love to try one out if you’re making them.
Dave.G.Designs yeah Dave thank you. I have several versions on my Etsy page if you wish to look. etsy.me/2GzEMWL Any questions, just ask. Thanks again, Colin
CL Woodturning hi Colin just checked it out and sent you a message through Etsy
Dave.G.Designs thanks again Dave!
CL Woodturning can’t wait to get it now. 👍🏻
Amazing tool. Where are you? Do you know how much to send to Australia. Cheers mate
John Swettenham hi John, same cost as US, £25 from UK. I post new tool each week in my Etsy shop... etsy.me/2GzEMWL
Thanks!
CL Woodturning thanks mate
I'm really intrigued. What's the price going to be on these bad boys?
TheTatfreak hi bud, I’m making them for £50 with handle, £40 without in 14mm, 16mm and 18mm shaft depending on what I can get. Made 8 this weekend, just need to turn their handles tomorrow. All on my Etsy soon.
Awesome. I just favorited your Etsy store.
Pal, I was already like WTF is he listening to?
Then when you said "what the hell am I listening to," I lost my dinner. Thanks for that unintended laugh.
Also gonna need one handled so I have your logo in my shop. Any stickers?
TheTatfreak haha yeah Radio 4 is constantly on in the background lol... yep I have stickers which come with any items I sell. Thanks man!
You're pretty dope at this. I'm super new. Like 2 months now. I just can't get the skew down. This will solve that issue. Thank you for putting this out there for the rest of us.
Not to belittle your video, your skew chisel is a modern modified skew grind. I remember when grinding the edge round instead of straight first became popular. If you grind your skew straight (like it comes from the Sorby factory) and a little steeper of an angle, it's the same as the lathe knife.
64t120r not really... you don’t get such a heel.
@@CLWoodturning Yes really. . . change the grind and it's exactly the same.
I think the advantage to this “knife” is the round shaft would be easier to roll on the rest than the western skew’s rectangular bar cross-section.
@@64t120r My skew is straight at a 45 degree angle so pretty similar to this knife. Its not under cut like this knifes heel but then that undercut plays no part in cutting or rubbing. Yes the round shaft may help to roll the tool. I'm not sure why there is so much juddering, I don't get that with a skew.
i want 1
Great video! This tool looks amazing. Have you tried using it on epoxy resin?
Jason Valenzuela yes bud I have and it works fine, harder thank Wood as riding the bevel can heat the epoxy a little too much but certainly cuts no worries.
CL Woodturning Awesome. Thanks for the reply. Maybe in the future you can do a video showing it being used on resin?😊
Jason Valenzuela sure bud. I still prefer round carbide in resin for the heat resin I mentioned but I’m game to show anyone interested, this tool on any medium really.
CL Woodturning Super cool. It’s mesmerizing watching how the tool works. I use Negative Rake carbide currently on resins and it works great.😊. I might want to buy one just to see how nice of a finish I get before sanding. Maybe if used the lathe knife just before sanding it might not heat up the resin as much.🤔
Boa noite gostaria de saber que madeira é essa sou Elizeu de hortolandia
I’d love one please! How does one go about getting one?
Tom Dean hi Tom, please follow my shop on Etsy and you’ll be notified if new ones for sale. I advertise around 10 each weekend depending on time and work commitments. Thank you! Colin

400 deg F in the oven is a lot more accurate and dependable and even for tempering. Just do it when the wife is not at home...
AffordBindEquipment haha yeah since this video, I have been using the oven to temper. All I get is “what’s that bloody smell!!” Every now n then lol! Cheers bud!
Could you sell me just the cutting tool? It would cut down the shipping cost and I could finish it myself.
Michel The woodturner sure Michael, I sell unhandled versions. I can see what effect it has on shipping sure.
why not silver solder it ?
I would love one ot these unhandled.Would you ship to USA
jerry lear sure bud, they are going on my Etsy page in a couple of days. etsy.me/2GzEMWL
Thanks
I would like one. How do I get it?
Please email thank you
How do I contact you about the lathe knife.I'm not on Facebook.
stephen swail hi bud, my email is clwoodturning@icloud.com. Thanks!
Have you tried the other tool that they use to hollow out bowls?
billy19461 ah the hook tool... not yet billy, I need to forge one... I’ve seen they can be made from bolts believe it or not!
What kind of bolt? I live in Louisiana, in the USA so the cost of the tools and shipping is a little high.
billy19461 I’ve seen a video where the cutting edge is actually a bolt thread, head cut off, shaped and milled to a cutting edge. Heated and bent to the hook shape, then welded to the bar... fascinating!
Yes it’s great looking tool and it sure hogs the wood out quickly.
I use a ring tool I made to cut just like their hooks. The closed loop or ring I believe gives superior strength to the tool. I think I got the idea from David Elsworth 30 years ago.
I would love to have one of your lathe knives...please let me know how to purchase one.
Carol Riley hi Carol... I’ll have some on my Etsy in the next week or so. Thank you!
etsy.me/2GzEMWL
CL Woodturning I’ll have to keep an eye out for them going up.. would be very interested in one.
Just buy a skew chisel and grind a steeper angle on it.
64t120r sure but you don’t get such a good drop cut heel point. I’m not disagreeing with you at all, but this is a different shape overall to what you suggest. Your right, you can use a skew with steep angle but in use, not the same. I’ve tried lol
@@CLWoodturning If your skew chisel isn't getting the same results, change the height of your tool rest. Give it a try.
I guess I don't understand how this is not simply a skew. It's essentially a skew mounted 90° to the bar, no? This is making no sense to me. Can you explain why it's different than a skew? It seems to be a very thin skew mounted sideways. Perhaps mounting it that way makes it different (better?) to use.
Jim Bessette way I’ve used a skew for many years and the difference is the orientation of the tool, the ease of twisting the tool, the fact you can address point first easily and use the heel more effectively. Even a skew ground to such an angle does not have such a defined heel. If you’re happy with your skew, and I was for many years, stay with it. I look as this as a skew that makes sense lol.
Can I get one in the USA ?
Tim V. Hi bud, yes I’ve already sold some to this in the states. I’m making more and will have them on my Etsy page within the week. Thanks
