Sometimes I blanch at how many hours I've put in a game, sure. But if there was ever an accurate display of how many hours I've wasted just zoning out on UA-cam to videos that I'm not even really enjoying that much in the first place, I'd probably just turn to ash on the spot.
Oh fuck, I don't even wanna think about that. I guess I've technically pulled double duty by watching a lot of UA-cam videos while also playing games, so if I saw a graph of how I've spent my life, I may well come out with more hours than I've actually lived by having games and youtube as different categories (including all the other shit I do with my time, obviously).
Life is short, spend as much time as you can on your computer 🗣️

People really, really underestimate how long 10,000 hours is. The sum total of all the time you spent in class during your entire middle and high school careers is less than 10,000 hours.
Yea, I've played Smite on and off for 10 years now, but "only" have 3.5k hours in it.
Yep, it’s a bit over 5 hours per day for 5 years. With no weekends or vacations.
yes but saying 100 hours is a lot is crazy
time is strange to me
sometimes I play a new game on steam and feel like I've played for like 3 hours only for it to be an hour 15
the dopamine of what you're doing in a time frame alters the way you see the time spent a whole bunch it's very weird
@LockOn7016 100 hrs is 1 paycheck period working full time and coming in an hour early and staying an hour late for overtime.
Everybody gangster till you ask to see their average daily screen time on their phone
Short form content is the cancer of modern life
under 1 hr :)) but dont ask me my average daily time spent on the computer :/
Nothin wrong with enjoying the time spending hundreds/thousands of hours on a game and then later down the line called life regretting it. Having said that, we probably should also always mention how those hours accumulated and at what age like NL mentioned. Big difference between me accumulating around 4000 hours of Dota2 aged 13-16 and accumulating like a hundred hours in spelunky over years in my early twenties.
I don't want to know how many days i spent WATCHING a certain mans Isaac let's play...
same i also have 4k hours in dota because of high school, it's the only thing that made me happy so i would come home from school and play for 12 hours getting 4 hours of sleep. in my adult life i can hardly play a new game that i've been excited about for more than 4 hours
literally same
Really it depends on what you would be doing with your time otherwise. The average person that doesn't play video games isn't using their time to learn an instrument or a new language, they're browsing social media, or watching UA-cam.
Its just not as easy to see how many hours you have on Twitter vs a video game on steam and the social stigma of video games is still pretty high so its looked down upon more
Idk man, I wouldn’t say my amount of free time has drastically changed with the decades. Like, sure, you get a little less, but the time spent preoccupied at school was simply replaced by time spent at college (where I ended up with *more* free time actually), and then the time spent preoccupied at college was replaced with time working. It’s not *much* more time per day working than I spent daily at high school.
Like sure you also get more errands and responsibilities but nowhere near enough to consume the remaining 5-6 hours of free time per day. Maybe like, half of it.
What I mean is, it doesn’t seem abnormal to have three hours per day where you can just do a thing you like. I don’t think it’s enough of a difference to be super notable.
Maybe I’m just insane and everyone around me is privileged too; if it were so, I would simply never know.
@@classified022Exactly this; I hate to say it, but I’m more “proud” of spending three or four hours per day playing Elden Ring than I would be if I were instead browsing Reddit or watching TV. Like obviously I could use that time going out for a walk or reading, or making art, but that’s what I’m usually doing for the other “half” of my total free time.
Three hours per day doing any single thing at all for personal reasons is more than normal. But using *all* your free time on that single thing, probably isn’t.
Just don’t forget, that 3 hours of a single thing per day will net you with 1095 hours of that thing per year, if you never skip out. That’s pretty damn reasonable, when you remember capital-G Gamers can easily double, sometime triple, that time spent.
I remember when i was like 12 i realized that I put 30 hours into dragon quest 8 and had a crisis about it for like 5 minutes. Then i shrugged and kept playing

I've gone back and forth on this. Where I'm at now is that you can believe that people have good intentions and still understand that they will weigh their first interactions with you heavily in their mind. Like, there's no way you can drop your 10,000 hours in runescape on them in your first conversation and expect them to get the context that you found those hours fulfilling and meaningful. Even good-intentioned people will categorize you as hedonistic/weird in this case, so you have to lie about that in your first interactions with them.

I don't play games that much but I have over 3000 hours spent watching movies. It's a sad embarrassing fact.
I would say that 3000 hours watching movies is considerably better than the same amount of hours playing a single game. There are a multitude of films that provide thought provoking themes and enriches our knowledge about life and different cultures. The same can't be said about raging in League of Legends because you want whatever high rank in competitive.
@@enzolabre6295 As someone who has spent many hours watching movies and TV shows and also has spent many hours playing games (especially when I was young), I can say that playing games has been substantially more helpful to me than any of the movies or TV shows I have watched.
You mentioned achieving a high rank in League and while I have never put much time into league, I have no reason to believe league is any different to the games I mainly played (most playtime would probably be cs, minecraft and overwatch in that order). What I gained mainly from getting good at these games was from a very early age I learned how to get good at difficult things and just generally became familiar with my own learning process.
As a result, I was able to become better at many things outside of video games much faster. Some are simply other hobbies that we have been societally conditioned to think are more worthwhile time usages (sports, instruments, chess if that counts). School, once I applied the same approach as I had to video games became pretty easy to do well in. In fact, out of everything I think video games were probably the only thing that has ever actually felt challenging.
Anyways, the premise that there exists hobbies that are more worthwhile time usages is in itself silly so I shouldn't really even be bothering to write this as there is no need to defend video gaming as a hobby. But still, the idea that becoming good/very good even at a video game is useless for other aspects of life is an incredibly ignorant thing to say.
Movie nerds are probably putting in like 700 hours per year at least (~2 hrs/day), 3k all-time seems relatively normal especially for gen x and millennials who grew up with home VHS/DVD/cable.
@@enzolabre6295not to be a league defender, but gaming can be social and gets you to compete, ppl dont play these games to get angry, thats such a shallow understanding of it, and i hate league of legends and played like 2hrs of it.
Its not a competition of whos activity is more shameful, its like saying darn africans be starving so no point complaining about my depression...
Just do what you want to do man, and look out for ur health / mental health while doing so.
@@homeyworkey Oh I absolutely get the social aspect of playing these competitive games. I Kinda touched on this topic in another reply and I do think It can be fine to have a big amount of hours in a game if its used as a social activity to spend time with firends (or even meet new ones).
Thats why I specifically mentioned raging because of a rank in competitive game. If you are spending most of your time in high levels of anger, I whole heartedly believe it is not good for you, mentally and potencially physically. I get that online rank may seem like an important thing to accomplish in the hobby that someone wants to engage with, but when it becomes and obsession, thats full on bad. The same that happens in league can also happen with Counter Strike, Valorant and so on. Leauge is just a great example for obvious reasons.
With that being said, I feel that the same amount of hours watching movies over a large period of time is nothing to feel ashamed by. I champion a world with more movie watching and less League!

I put 1700 hours in CS and that was my entire childhood. How tf do you play 7000 hours
And now CS is dead. My girlfriend also played her entire childhood and has 4,600+ hours in just CSGO/CS2.
I think a significant amount of that playtime is AFK, even if these people don't realise it. When you commit to a game that hard you open it without thinking. They probably leave it on the menu when they take a break or go to have dinner, why close the game if you're just going to open it again when you get back?
At a certain point reaching the next milestone becomes exciting, I wouldn't be surprised if people purposely leave the game open in the background or while they're AFK just to increase their hours a bit.

The most hours i have in a game is probably csgo (around3-4k) and played that game nonstop for three years and stray hours throught the years. Second place is around 900 and then quickly falling. If you have more then 5k in a game you either have a problem, you are a pro e-sports player to some degree or you enjoy less then 3 different games a year. I'm pretty happy with the fact that I don't have more than 500 hours in any single game. I may possibly have 2000 hours or more across all of the Pokemon franchise, but I've also been playing that for 20 years, so that's just 100 hours a year, and there's probably a few hundred hours of that time where I wasn't even touching the controller, just sat there and pondered shit or talked to my friends.
Although, I guess there may be cause for concern due to the fact that I have between 100 and 500 hours in more games than most, but let's not think about that.
Sure I'm insane for playing an online game that gets constantly updated for a few thousand hours over the years but watching friends and the office all the way through 10 times is normal 🤓

Neither of those are strictly "normal" but that's ok. If someone told me they rewatched a show 10 times I would find that odd. Yeah there are some societal double standards surrounding gaming vs other media but there's no point being bitter about it.

If someone is ever appalled that you invested 100 hours into a hobby then they either haven't though about it for more than five seconds (in which case it would be easier to just point out how silly they're being than to live a lie) or their life is completely devoid of joy and you probably shouldn't associate too much with them anyway.

People always saying that a hundred or couple hundred hours in a game isnt much has always been really weird to me. "Oh but that's not enough time to make much progress in-game!" That's still multiple full days! Weeks even!
I believe it depends on the game and its content. Games like Pyre and Inscryption are ones that are supposed to be played for small amounts of time (20-30 at most, unless you want to revisit them), while competive games and MMOs are kinda designed to be part of your hobby routines. Instead of going to a bar or playing football with oyur friends, you would go play these games with them. i quit tf2 after 600 hours cause i still sucked at the game and every time i played it it made me mad i dont get how other people in my spot would be okay with wasting another 600 just to not get curbstomped every match
i know i asked for it but i cant believe i got cooked live like that LMAO
