I recently found your channel. I really appreciate your content. Your approach is just what I need, practical, real life, with many of the aspects that I hope to have when we buy a house. My grandson and I watch when it's time to wind down for the night. We are in Virginia, in an apartment for now. I really miss my garden in KY. Miss having tomatoes, and the work to achieve my own produce. It was all on a very small scale. Thank you sir, also for the Bible verses...every time, it makes me smile. God bless you, your family, and all your hard work.
Wood chips are a very good addition to keep weeds down and keep moist ground. Old tomatoes and any pests are a real treat for the hens. Great video. Best success with your farm stand! 🍅
Hi, Family Dad. I have that exact same tool, and I love it. Mine was a gift from my brother, so I tried to help you out by asking him where he got it. He said he got it at an estate sale. Looks like they can only be had second hand (just kidding, of course). I'm going to keep looking for a place to get them, and when I find one, I'll report it to you.
I made tomato cages out of recycled spindles from rebuilding our back porch, and reused the nails and screws too! You must have a good plan to keep that grass from growing back, especially when you bring in the water. You need some patches on those pants! ;-) I can't wait to see it all in full production.
Not quite on the determinate and indeterminate of tomatoes. The majority you find are indeterminate. Indeterminate tomatoes grow and fruit until they are killed by frost. So they can grow indefinitly if frost can't kill them as well as growing to massive heights. Determinate tomatoes cap off their growth at around 4 feet and are bushier. They pretty much grow one set of fruit then die off. They do not keep growing and fruiting through the season.
Commenting from 3-1/2 years into the future! Tomatoes that are to be larger than a marble must be grown in a greenhouse here in my corner of Westcoart Canada! CHEERS
Not a hand tool but, the Garden Weasel Claw is close to the same tool. Then you could do the entire row standing up and then plant. save the back and knees :)
Ace 55 Tomato is a determinate-type variety producing large, deep red fruit with low acid content, valued it for being among the first open pollinated, multiple disease resistant tomatoes.
Use shredded straw for mulch around the tomato’s you’ll be amazed how long it Keeps the soil moist vs not having it i put straw in a trash Can and take the weed wacker to it to shred it...also the elastic cord you can buy at Walmart in the craft section is great for tying tomato’s up because it will never dig in or pinch the stem it just stretches
Could I plant Roma and beef steak next to each other in a raised garden bed?? What’s the best support to use in those? Like sticks, fishing wire, little wire fence?
Just found you through MiGardener. Another great gardening UA-cam channel. Just curious what part of Michigan you are in. I'm in the upper Thumb area. we are dying for some rain. All the rain the state has been getting has either gone north into the Lake or south along the I-69 corridor.
Holly's Simple Life I don't know what you wear while gardening, but I wear old cloths that are comfortable. I'm assuming you wear designer jeans and tops.
Amazon link is from Amazon uk, type in Silverline hand cultivator. This one is made by Silverstone and is quite cheap. They have several different makes varying in price.
I always support my tomatoes, how ever they want to live I'll support that choice. Btw you were holding a baby tomato i one hand and telling us that they are gonna die, not very nice for that tiny tomato to know! You could have been abit more considerate and put it down while telling us :-) I agree about not using tomato cages, we let them freerange aswell. Good video, can't wait to see them grow :-)
and you can plant much much closer personally on our farm we do 14 inches apart on each side 24 inches eats up acerage and more or less waists water for the future.
I agree, generally in our home garden I have planted as close as 18 inches apart and 24" between rows so at least I can squeeze down the rows to harvest.
Indeterminate grow to a large size vine, determinate to a bush size. When planting it's best to pick off the lower leaves and bury part of the stem, that encourages root growth along the buried stem. Tomatoes should be watered from below not wetting the leaves. Wet leaves encourages fungal growth and disease.
Awesome Video once again!. Great Idea using fishing line and sparkly ribbon but what about the dangers in the air, birds! You might want to make a homemade scarecrow to put in your field. Some farmers use those loud canons that make a gun shot every few minutes but who wants to listen to that LOL. I look forward to all your videos please keep them coming!.
You make want to look that up - determinate = grows to a specific height, normally shorter, sets fruit generally all at once and then dies off. Indeterminate will grow very tall and are only killed off when it frosts, if grow indoors will live indefinitely. how was that wrong again?
SSLFamilyDad you're right there but in the video you explained that being determinant means it is annual. Determinant means it is a bush and is a determined height vs indeterminate being a vine with no specified length/height. Also most varieties are indeterminate not determinant. Good video just not quite right on some of the tips and info. Also tomatoes unless they are a hybrid bred specifically for it will not fruit in the hot hot summer heat of the subtropics or tropics.
The hand tilling tool has been found on Amazon! - amzn.to/2IdrdcL

We love the volunteer variety.
I love your videos. My dad gardens and every video of your I’m telling him something he didn’t know. Thanks! XOXOXOXO

The little tiller tool used to come as a free bonus when you bought the garden claw that used to be advertised on tv all the time.
can't wait to see as this garden grows & thanks for all that info SSL Dad
Not a hand tool but, the Garden Weasel Claw is close to the same tool. Then you could do the entire row standing up and then plant. save the back and knees :)
Good luck with your 250 tomato plants and everything else. Take a little time to go and get some firewood aswell so it can dry out abit over summer ☺
Don’t forget it’s important to stick to a good watering regimen because uneven watering will result in splitting fruit 😁
The Niagara Falls Garage Gardener very good point. Also, deep watering because tomatoes can put down deep roots.
Love your videos. Read up on determinate vs indeterminate tomatoes...your description on that was not accurate.
Ace 55 Tomato is a determinate-type variety producing large, deep red fruit with low acid content, valued it for being among the first open pollinated, multiple disease resistant tomatoes.
You are correct here, i lumped Ace 55 incorrectly in with the hybrids.
First time watching today. Great content. I subscribed and look forward to seeing more great content.

Never knew tomatoes had elbows. Great vid!
Carhartt please support this guy and send him some pants!

Great video. That hand tiller you can get from eBay, amazon etc. Type in hand claw cultivator.
just tried Amazon and nothing found, or ebay. Only found the stand up variety not the hand tool:(
Hi here is the eBay link 302437904608. If you paste this number in eBay search it should take you to item. This company posts world wide from uk.
Amazon link is from Amazon uk, type in Silverline hand cultivator. This one is made by Silverstone and is quite cheap. They have several different makes varying in price.
You can make tomato cages out of concrete reinforcement wire cheap
Silverline 229673 Hand Cultivator 160mm is similar to the one you used.
Cages! I could not imagine you using them in this garden.
I always support my tomatoes, how ever they want to live I'll support that choice.

so I can see you have a mic hooked on your shirt, Can you tell me what kind your using and is it blue tooth please. Thank you
Not bluetooth, just a powered lapel mic hooked to my camcorder with a long cable
SSLFamilyDad thank you.

Have you found a way to protect your plants from deers ?
going to try a simple fishing line fence around the perimeter with ribbons tied on, so far they have just walked by everything and not eaten a thing!

side bonus of a stick against the stem of your tomato plant: cut worm deterrent
mwilliamshs really? Did not know this. I wonder why.
Jack black the worm wraps around the soft stem of the plant and cuts it. With a hard stick against the stem of the plant, it can't.
Garden weesell
Try Garden Weasel. There is a long handle one, but I thought there was a hand sized one. I found this in the images.

really dropped the ball on the determinate vs indeterminate explanation
