Appreciate you adding the Bible verse at the end - keeps things in perspective, brother.

I did this sort of thing by shovel and wheelbarrow with 5 raised beds of this size. Lots of work but so rewarding!

Hi we just started our first raised bed a few months back. Im losing all sorts of plants and vegetables to bugs and all differnt sorts. Do you pray for pests or just do natural remedies. Thank you for your time. Very big fan for years

Dear Family Dad, Thanks again for an informative, practical program on raised beds. It was good to hear the reasons for raised beds, and I was very interested to hear with what soil mixture you fill the raised beds. All very interesting and convincing. I now look forward to progress reports and, of course, to learn about your harvest. Sincerely, Larry Clarence Lewis, London, Ontario, Canada.

why not fill the bottom with junk wood, leaves ect? thats what i did which i seen on another channel. other than that i did my beds pretty similar to yours. surrounded by wood chips. i have deerts coming and eating things and voles also. one of the two bites my stems off and leaves it. i topped off with aged wood chips after the plants were big enough.

I start my raised beds with a couple of inches straw on the bottom. Mine are also approximately 12 inches high.

What mulch do you use in your raise bed? Are wood chips good?

Wow, That raised bed looks great ! I know your soil has everything it probably needs, but have you ever tried adding matchsticks to the peppers ? I stick 8-10 around each plant for the sulfur, I was always told that peppers love it ? Thumbs up.

We compost wood chips, and that seems to keep the soil loose, so we don't need peat moss. Sand does keep the soil looser, and allows water to soak in faster.
Since you have wood chips around the raised beds, what you could do once it composts down a bit more, is shovel it into the nearest raised bed.

I have always had good luck with California Wonder green peppers but have never been successful with any of my favorite, red bell peppers.

@@SSLFamilyDad I Called Steiner Tractor for you 1-888-966-5682 they are at 1660 S. M-13 Lennon, MI 48449. Didn't know if you have 3 or 4 cly in the 4000. Standard size rod bearings and oil pan gasket for about $40 in stock for either engine. They sell shop manuals too. Lots of farmers do an in frame rebuild on their tractors.

You kinda missed an opportunity to employ hugelkulture to help fill this bed. For someone like me who doesn't have access to a tractor and unlimited topsoil, it's a lifesaver. So far I've been able to fill two deep raised beds with what I had on hand without having to purchase any additional topsoil. All I needed to buy was one bale of peat moss and one bale of straw for mulch.

Not a big fan of that method especially in a 11" deep bed. Digging out potatoes and other root crops in a bed filled with sticks is no fun. Also, I have the compost so I don't need to wait for wood to break down underground.

@@SSLFamilyDad You're right. Different situation, different technique. My beds are about 20" deep.
