Hey, stumbled on your videos because of the EV charger - nice project
I have a j1772 cable, beefy relay, a load of arduinos and esp etc, I'm actually struggling to get my head round the micro electronics of the pilot etc 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

How do I control the PP if I'm using a 3 PIN (L, N, Earth) connector like and want to extend the charger to those (inc EV scooters) as well?

Hey Jacob, Building your charger and I have a quick question, what exactly does the diode check do? How important is it to check for the diode ?

@Jacob Dykstra, how do you implement output current control? You have shown the demo in the introductory video.

    Hi Jacob,
I got my EV Charger working with your concept. I had to add a resistor between the PP pin and the earth in order to make my car react correctly. Thanks for your input.

Are you using a type-B RCD for detecting every possible fault current in your chargingstation or will you install that in your house sentral?

@Jacob Dykstra (and everybody else who can help me out) I live in Europe and intend to buy a Renault Zoe and make my own 3 phase charger at home. Over here the charging uses the exact same J1772 protocol, only the plugs have 2 additional pins to allow for 3 phase charging if desired. From these videos we learned that the Leaf simply ignores the 0 to -12V part of the PWM signal but does that go for all electric cars? I heard the Zoe can be really fussy about a charger that is not grounded correctly, it simply refuses to charge. But will it also check if the negative side of the PWM signal is there? And why should there be a negative 12V signal in the first place since it's level does not change during the various stages and it does not seem to do anything? Any ideas? Great videos btw, thank you very much!

The -12 volt part of the puls is a part of an additional safety feature known as a diode check. The car charging module has a diode in it and it only allows current to flow one way. This is important for the case that the plug gets dropped into a puddle of water and the water has the correct resistance to fool the charger to thinking it is connected to a car. The diode check is a feature that ensures the charger will not activate for this case. It is not necessary but recommended especially if you will be using the charger outside.

@@jacobdykstra8499 Thanks Jacob, perfectly clear now. I've already got the parts and will start building it next week. Great video series, very informative. I noticed you mentioned different voltages in part 3 than in part 2. The voltage at pin 2 of the LM393 should be about 6.3V and at pin 6 around 9.3V is that correct? Maybe I'm confused but you mentioned 3.3V earlier. Anyway, good luck with your channel!
