Honestly my last season I cried A LOT. It always felt like the pressure was on me. What helped me the most was the people I surrounded myself with. Your friends that you make while in DCI are always going to be the ones that you will end up calling on whenever things get tough. Mine helped me realize that other people were having as much trouble as I was, and to just keep pushing whenever you feel like you just can't make it anymore. I'm so happy that I stuck it out. DCI truly 'tis a gift.

Appreciation journals! If you write down one thing every day that just made you happy, like a great compliment, or a fantastic runthrough. Even if its just a really crisp breeze or an awesome sunset or a pretty tight rep, it's really helpful when you hit your wall to look back at them.

@@macerunner4674 yeah I marched legends in 2013 and tried out for multiple world class corps. Almost made Madison scouts in 2016 but I didn’t watch my health or fitness after legends. I wish I kept with legends since their environment was incredible. Don’t be like me and regret not marching world class if you want to.

I so get this. I marched, unfortunately didn't finish, a DCA corps and there was a lot of pressure when i started marching later than the rest of the corps and i guess since mostly everyone else had their clicks and a more older group, it was pretty hard. What i had to do is to try and give my best effort every runthrough, warmup, every aspect of my time in the corps and it became so much easier to express myself to others. I made friends and memories i will never forget!! .

I usually hit my wall right at the beginning of tour both years I marched. What helped me was breaking things down to the smallest bits possible. Not thinking of days or rehearsal blocks, but single reps. I looked forward to meals where I could relax and recharge for the next block. Performing and touring makes things much more bearable, having good shows reminded me why I was exactly there.

Man this is how I felt during marching band. It was summer and it was so hot outside, my feet were in absolute pain and I hit the wall and I just wanted to quit so bad. Soon after we started drill, a lot of people quit. I would think to myself how bad I would I feel and how other people would feel if I quit. This really motivated me and it got me through the summer! It gets fun after the hard stuff, trust me.

This is so awesome! I made a PIW WGI group and am the youngest one in the group by two years and am constantly being pushed farther than I thought I could go. I'm just in the beginning of the "hitting the wall stages" and this helped me a lot to skip a few stages and realize it's going to be just fine and it's totally worth it.

One big thing that helps me is finding ways to make rehearsal more fun. Make it a game or something. One time last year, I ran back to my set, and and then told our cymbal tech that I beat his entire section. The tech then told the entire cymbal line that I challenged them and the rest of that rehearsal turned into a a fastest reset game. It didn't matter who won, but it made rehearsal better, faster, and created a bonding moment between other members.

Watching all your videos before I go on tour with the Oregon Crusaders this coming summer. I am marching euphonium, but am a bass clarinet music ed major at the University of North Texas. I feel like I will definitely hit my wall during spring training. My biggest difficulty is holding up the euphonium, since i'm used to woodwinds.

One of the walls I hit when I was in the rookie year was the really bad back & shoulder sunburns...
    Tips:
Don't put water on the sunburn especially cold water
Don't think about the pain just push through it
and remember sunburns won't hurt as much next day/week or even your next marching year!!

I hit a wall last summer during move-ins. For two weeks I was a vibraphone player in cascades. However a about a week before tour began our synth two dropped out for medical problems and I was told to cover her. It was definitely one of the most stressful things ever. I had to learn and memorize 12 pages of music in one week. I did almost cry every single day before tour because of the stress. Before the original synth player left she gave me note and said you can do it. You know what? She was right. So if you get set on a different instrument then what planned to do, just know you can do it too. :)

My "wall" didn't come until the Atlanta Regional for all three years that I marched. The reason being is that it was so close to being home and so close to being finished with the season. The only way that helped me was the mentality to get up and to do my job. Drum Corps isn't like any other activity. 100% are required and responsible for doing 100% of the work. Not 10% doing the work. 100%. At the end of the day until the end of your last show you must push to do the work!

  • @rjw1994

For me, I used meal times and the time between the last block of the day and lights out to completely unwind. I didnt look at dots, i didnt look at music, i did nothing related to my show. Meals and down time is a time for rest and to clear your head...use it as such.

I'm a senior clarinet player in high school learning mellophone. This will be my rookie year in Spokane Thunder Drum and Bugle. At my high school, we do pretty competitive marching band and have an over night camp kind of like drum corp, but I'm starting to feel the nerves of marching this summer. Most of all scared of people in my section being all "She doesn't even play mello she's gonna hold us back! Merh!" Or looking down on me in some way. Any advice/supportive thoughts jdfuncorps? Anybody?

    GET ME A MOTHERFUCKING WRISTBAND
All of these things are true really XD I can't believe how much Drum Corps does to a person! It's amazing! I hit my wall 3 or 4 days into all days and let me tell you it was hard to get over. I got over it in 2 days or so and then I was fine. I never wanted to quit though haha. I miss Drum Corps and can't wait for this season :) Great video!

Best advice I can give to rookies is to grab a vet that is already really good and compete to be better than them. Run faster than them, be more efficient with them, don't let them beat you. Always look for things that you could do better. Become friends with them and let them know that you're trying to be your best; have them keep you in check. It helps a lot. And like David says, DON'T QUIT! :D

  • @starkness12
    @starkness12 11 років тому

when you hit the wall, notice how far down you are. Note how low and terrible you feel, and then think about the rest of your life so far. You have never had anything like this before, and you've never been so tired and so beaten before. Use that. If anything is to be learned in Drum Corps, its will power. If you can push through this, anything can be done.
oh, and there's always comedy. Find a website or friend, or whatever, that when you get down, makes you smile. For me, its tickld

just be so good they cant say anything. There are tonssss of people in drum corps that are primary woodwind players, just practice harder than anyone else. People in Drum Corps are full of team spirit, you are much more likely to get a nice vet working with you and encouraging you during mealtimes and breaks than a few angry section members and I doubt an instructor would let that happen. but remember it is your responsability to contribute your best for your corps family. skype lessons help too

The weird thing is, I probably hit my wall the first few camps. Although there are some tough times, I actually really loved move-ins my rookie year. I hated being inside during the camps and just holding up a euph. I'm usually in good shape so once we started doing things outside it was much more enjoyable.

+Hyperactive Cosplay Honestly, its hard. I'm a junior, and I'm trying to convince my parents and grandparents to let me audition for Carolina Gold, but they keep saying "how are you going to pay for it? and "what color is the sky in your world, because in ours, its blue" (we're southern, so that is one of their heavily used phrases). Perseverance is your ally, although give them enough time to think about it. Also, if you somehow get into the Cadets (they are a world class, and much bigger ensemble. Not saying you won't, but especially for a freshman, it will be especially difficult) Also, raise money yourself, and possibly ask business owners that you know for sponsorships.
      Hope this helps!!!

The DCI rule is that you can't be 21 before June 1 to be able to march the summer. The only difference between Corps is for color guard. The reason is because you can not graduate from college as a color guard major, you can however be an instrumental or percussion major.
