I needed this video so much. I'm a clarinet player and have been playing it for 7 years, and this year I decided I want to join a drum corp. I'm going to work my ass off to try and get into an open class corp then work my way up to world class. I was having doubts, but now that I know it can be done, I'm super excited. I also love the idea of buzzing to the radio!
You have inspired me, you are the person that has made me think that drum corps is an option for me. I am feeling daring so contra is where I hope to go. Seriously, just thanks for possibly changing my future.
It works out pretty well, most drum corps marchers are college-age actually. The camps are usually once a month til move-ins, and you'll probably be done with your classes before move-ins begin. While your corps will prefer you try to make it to all of the camps, you're still excused for certain things like concerts, juries, or things like that.
I was forced on to clarinet in 6th grade, switched to bass clarinet in 9th grade, and picked up tuba sophomore year. 3 months later I was contracted with the Phantom Regiment (even though I ended up marching Colts that year instead, long story). Then I marched the next two years (2012 and 2013) with the Cadets. It is generally easier to make tuba lines in DCI because fewer people audition, you'll just suffer much more pain then everyone else. It is possible though, just keep practicing
Great video. I was a pretty good piccolo and flute player in high school and use to toy around playing trumpet. I just went the other way, joined color guard, and marched DCI.
Alto or tenor? Most would go for mellophone or baritone (but I know some who learned euphonium and contra), but really it's all up to you! Since I played tenor, my music parts would've been more similar to baritone, but I chose mellophone just because I liked it more.
So if anybody still watches this video, I'm a sax player learning baritone. I started in November, didn't acquire one until December... So really only been playing a few weeks... Not very consistently. Anyway, here's what I've learned so far: Holding your instrument up to shows- IT IS SO HELPFUL. At the first rehearsal I went to, holding the horn up hurt so much that I cried. I know. Wimp. But what can you do. :P Anyway, I started practicing holding the horn and it's working so well. The best part is that I just get to watch DCI shows and I hop all over the place from different corps and years. It's an fun method to build up strength for it. I highly recommend it. I wish I had more tangible results to tell. But it works. Buzzing- I'm struggling a lot with this because I'm so new to it and pretty much alone in learning it until the next camp. I've been working on just matching a pitch and trying to keep it in tune. That seems to be that hardest part. In fact, I find it easier to play the whole horn rather than just the mouthpiece, oddly enough. But that's just something I noticed. So yeah. Progress.
+Laurie Pavero As a brass player, some advice for buzzing is that you should never apply more pressure to go higher. Keep a constant light pressure on your lips. An example of how much pressure you should be using is to take your finger, press it gently on your lips until you feel your teeth through your lip, then very slowly pull your finger away from your lip until you can no longer feel your teeth. That is roughly the pressure you want to be using when playing any brass instrument. Also, you mentioned that playing the horn is easier than just the mouthpiece, you are entirely correct. That's because the back pressure from the horn creates resistance, making it easier to vibrate your lips. Just like how buzzing on a mouthpiece is much easier than buzzing your lips alone. But being able to properly buzz in tune will translate into playing in tune.
I also exactly the same. I played clarinet then I switched to bass and started learning tenor sax. I actually marched bass.. and ya it was kinda bad. But im a junior so I'm planing on learning baritone over the next year and a half. After I graduate I want to audition for either Crown, Vanguard, Phantom, or whatever corps I feel like I am capable of by that time. :D
So I'm about to start taking home a mello so I can march it next year. I've played alto sax since 6th grade and I'm in 10th grade right now. I learned guitar and got pretty good/ok (or at least I think) in a year.
This is super late. But honestly the fact that you went from a woodwind instrument to mello helps me a lot in hope that I can march trumpet coming from a saxophone
Woot Woot Bass clarinetist! I'm glad this video is on here, too many woodwinds think they have to stick that instrument family, but they are dead wrong. Also thank you for not being one of those corp people (like most I know) who are brass purist and despise woodwinds for existing. Great video ^_^
I'm a Freshman in high school, and I play Bari in Jazz and concert, and I really wanted to do DCI. So, I play Euphonium in The Columbians which is a corps that reformed in Washington. It's odd being such a noob, being the youngest in the corps, and a complete newbie to brass in general. But, I'm determined.
Freshman saxophone here! I currently play 5 instruments yet none of them are brass, I am learning trumpet and snare so I can march dci and indoor leagues. Because of how it times out, before I even try out for a corps I’ll have 8 shows under the belt, and I’ll start in open class and work my way up to work class. Because of where my birthday is I am lucky enough to be able to march an extra year too.
I played flute since 6th grade and then in this year, in tenth grade, I decided I wanted to do drum corps, so I started to learn baritone, two weeks later I had the first audition camp for mandarins and got a call back, went back a month later got another call back, and then went back one more time in February and got contracted
I finally brought the mello home to practice...and I got something from the bluecoats down..im so excited to start mellophone and possibly audition for drum corps in the future! :D
Thank you for this video! My primary instrument is oboe, but I am learning baritone so I can try out for the Ohio State University Marching Band and your tips were very helpful!
Hey guys! I'm a flute primary, and I'm learning Mellophone! I'm planning to march it in marching band this year and continue pushing myself to play and extend my abilities. I'm sure I'll update later, if I manage to achieve my dreams of dci. But I want you to know it's possible and it's okay to suck, already it's come a long way from about three months of working
+Kevin Borrego I did make it, I'm marching mello at my high school first, so Milford High School in OH! I'm so excited that I got to pull it off and march, and I'm hoping go onto corps after high school, or maybe an open class during the school year (and then my marching band)
Did the mellophone mess up your embouchure at first on the flute? I’m a junior in HS and play flute and picc and planning on studying music. I’m just curious.
4 year clarinet player now I'm learning tuba ( Sousa ) for my high school marching band bc we need tubas , I plan on trying out for a drum corps next summer
I'm a alto sax and I started back in 2009. It's my freshman year of high school and I (finally) get to see all the opportunities in music, one of those being drum corps. One of the middle school teachers talked about Bushwackers DCA at one of the rehearsals (since he's the caption head) so I thought I'd check it out. A few weeks later I find myself registering for a camp. It's been 4 months and I can reach a high C on the mellophone... IT IS POSSIBLE PEOPLE!!!
Ive played the alto sax for two years going one three, but now I got a trumpet as an early Christmas present and I got it about two weeks ago. brass isn't as hard as I thought it was gonna be. I can almost play the scale in two octaves.
Ayyyeeeeeee! I know you you were talking about at the end of the video. She was a visual tech at the beginning of the 2013 season for Blue Devils B, then she went to Spirit. Small world! :D
I have played alto sax ever since the 5th grade. I'm going to have a friend teach me Baritone so I can join Music City since I live in Nashville well Antioch, Tn. If I like marching then ill try out for Carolina Crown
So can you go to the camp knowing nothing? I don't have a brass instrument available. I'm thinking of playing trumpet since I play flute. Do you have any tips? Do they teach you the fingerings at camp/auditions too?
I play Alto and Tenor Sax, and I want to march in a drum corp. Which corps take just about anyone. My ultimate goal is to be in Crown, but I'm not going to get there just like that.
i played alto through intermedate and then i switched to tenor this year as our seniors are graduating and i'll be in the quartet next year. i really want to march DCI in the future possibly with Phantom. my friend is trying to teach me trumpet but i really need to practice but i also want to switch to mello for DCI as the tenor mainly gets backrounds and color tones. I guess i can ask my friend if he can lend me his trumpet so i could practice it. i kind of want to learn baritone too because of low brass though. how did you pick your instrument?
I switched to trombone from alto/tenor sax. Not because of dci, but because i despise the people in the section. But now i know that i can try out for dci, which is pretty cool
i've just recently started learning mellophone and i'm originally a clarinet/alto sax player. is it possible for me to be good enough to audition for Legends in december?
Hello! I'm a high school student (Junior) thinking about college (Music Major) (Marching a DCA corps this year than DCI until I age out) And from your experiences does college and DCI Camps/move in's go smoothly? Or will there be any difficulty between balancing the two?
Hearing that you only played brass for a few months before auditioning was really great because I am a sophomore who has played flute (woo!) since 6th grade. A friend of mine marching baritone and plays quite a few other brass instruments. He has been teaching me how to play baritone once a week for a few months now :) My dream corp is Phantom Regiment but i am just uncertain and intimidated. Any suggestions? ps 1:17 is sooooo me xD
I unfortunately have abandoned my clarinet. i played it from age 9 to 18. I havent given up band but it hurts me now that i want to join the concert band with 2 years without playing it
my band director marched crossmen 2002 high note specialist trumpet he met everybody in the corps he was talking to a lower split trumpet 2nd or 3rd trumpet and then he was talking she had great sound they made finals that year so he asked so...how long have you played trumpet and she said one year she played clarinet for awhile she saw a corps show and fell in love
I tried to ask my band director if I could have some help trying to learn the mellophone, he said that I would have to go to third band but that I couldn't be in marching band anymore. What do I do?
Hey David I play the saxophone and it has always been my dream to march Drum corps. I wanna march mello next year with the cadets. Do you have any suggestions? Is it possible to learn mello then march DCI?
Been playing alto sax for 6 years. I’m planning on auditioning on baritone for the battalion in about a month. Hopefully they see potential in me and give me a contract...

Are you being sarcastic? Because I'm no brass player, but I just feel bad for anyone who plays contra. To me, it looks difficult and painful compared to other brass instruments.
do it!!! I'm a flute player too, trying to learn how to play trombone. so much fun! working my way onto trumpet. its so exciting. Im hoping to be good enough to make it to dci, i mean how hard could it be? (dies inside)
IMSCREWED nah, that's the closer to Phantom 2008 (which was one of the shows he said loving when he saw it). Also, this came out in 2012, so T/LT wasn't a thing yet lol.

Same with me, I play clarinet too! I was thinking about learning trumpet
How did it go
I play clarinet/bass clarinet and I'm thinking about switching to either trumpet or mello.
@blackdiamond 0075 we can tell 😂
You have inspired me to get in shape lose weight and get into DCI even if it means marching Open Class (im planing on going into the TB Thunder
Yeah!
i played clarinet from 5th grade to freshman year. marched clarinet freshman year, switched to baritone, havent looked back since.
WHOOO!!!! BARITONE BUDDY!!!!!!!
I did the sameeeee!!! But I started clarinet 4th grade marched my freshmen year and now this year I switched to baritone 😁😁
EUPHO! LET'S GOOOOOOOO
You have inspired me, you are the person that has made me think that drum corps is an option for me. I am feeling daring so contra is where I hope to go. Seriously, just thanks for possibly changing my future.

a flute/bassoonist switching to contra for marching season next year and might go for Mandarins
I've played clarinet since 7th grade. I'm now a junior and now switching to baritone since I want to join a corps. Btw I love your shirt! lol
Flute/oboe player for about 9 years now on flute and 6 on oboe. Switching to Mellophone for auditions :)
Same!
I played the oboe in middle school. But I'm in guard now

I'm auditioning on Mello for the Cadets in a few weeks. I've only got a trumpet to practice on, though.
Alto sax since forever :3 my best friend in colorguard is teaching me so we can go into drum corps together on guard and all.
I'm a alto sax and I started back in 2009. It's my freshman year of high school and I (finally) get to see all the opportunities in music, one of those being drum corps. how long did it take?
Half of the mellophones at my high school are oboes and trumpets. We even have a bassoon who switched.
Probably baritone/euphonium would be my guess as to what he'd suggest.
Ive played the alto sax for two years going one three, but now I got a trumpet as an early Christmas present and I got it about two weeks ago. brass isn't as hard as I thought it was gonna be. I can almost play the scale in two octaves.

played clarinet i middle school, bass clarinet until 11th grade, and play tenor sax my senior year, and now auditioning for blue stars!
So can you go to the camp knowing nothing? I don't have a brass instrument available. I'm thinking of playing trumpet since I play flute. Do you have any tips? Do they teach you the fingerings at camp/auditions too?
What about trombone? What should I consider switching to for DCI?
I've played the clarinet for six years and I'm learning how to play the mellophone to join the Bluecoats
Finally video for this. I Play clarinet to. Thanks so Much
I walked into Jersey Surf without brass experience and marched Contra last summer! I'm a Bari Sax player. So anything is possible.
i play clarinet and im in the cymbal line for my schools indoor percussion
where did you march man
Clarinet for 5 years, switching to trumpet to join the Crossmen.
Learning baritone for Crossmen!
marting94 good luck!
What a coincidence I played horn and I really loved it but I picked up clarinet for a second instrument
I play Alto and Tenor Sax, and I want to march in a drum corp. Which corps take just about anyone. My ultimate goal is to be in Crown, but I'm not going to get there just like that.
I don't know if this sounds like a stupid question or not, but do you have to play French Horn in order to play Mellophone?
Ermagerd Adventure Time T-shirt! That makes me happy
i played alto through intermedate and then i switched to tenor this year as our seniors are graduating and i'll be in the quartet next year. i really want to march DCI in the future possibly with Phantom. my friend is trying to teach me trumpet but i really need to practice but i also want to switch to mello for DCI as the tenor mainly gets backrounds and color tones. where did you go to college?
I played saxophone just do colorguard or drum major first and learned how to play from hornline
I switched to trombone from alto/tenor sax. Not because of dci, but because i despise the people in the section. But now i know that i can try out for dci, which is pretty cool
i've just recently started learning mellophone and i'm originally a clarinet/alto sax player. is it possible for me to be good enough to audition for Legends in december?
anything is possible. I had the same reed background as you, ended up marching contra. after two straight finals, was offered to be section leader
Omg a fellow bass clarinet!!!!
i play sax to and i wanna march with cadets in hopefully 2 years what instrument would you recommend?
What kind of mouthpieces do you recommend for mellophone? I've heard that some players use trumpet mouthpieces, but I don't really want to do that.
Hello! I'm a high school student (Junior) thinking about college (Music Major) (Marching a DCA corps this year than DCI until I age out) And from your experiences does college and DCI Camps/move in's go smoothly? Or will there be any difficulty between balancing the two?

I play clarinet and trombone (just jazz) and I plan to learn baritone!
I unfortunately have abandoned my clarinet. i played it from age 9 to 18. I havent given up band but it hurts me now that i want to join the concert band with 2 years without playing it
Why is there no sound?
my band director marched crossmen 2002 high note specialist trumpet he met everybody in the corps he was talking to a lower split trumpet 2nd or 3rd trumpet and then he was talking she had great sound they made finals that year so he asked so...how long have you played trumpet and she said one year she played clarinet for awhile she saw a corps show and fell in love
Omg your history of instrument is LITERALLY exactly the same as mine. I played clarinet and later switched to bass and 10th I switched to sax.
I tried to ask my band director if I could have some help trying to learn the mellophone, he said that I would have to go to third band but that I couldn't be in marching band anymore. What do I do?
8 year clarinet player, learning baritone for scv :^)
Vera Zhong SAME
I play piccolo and I would love to be in DCI :( piccolos are small and POWERFUL especially while playing Stars and Stripes forever
Devyn Boyle exactly! Piccolos should be used in dci.
Tenor sax, thinking of switching to mello... Hoping lol but my best friend/sister plays mello so I can deal haha
switched to trumpet after playing clarinet for 5 years. I plan on joining the Bluecoats #Bloo
soprano/bass clarinet & flute player, learning mello. :)
I don't play a woodwind instrument, but I still don't know what brass instrument to try out for, I can't decide between contra, euph, or bari..
+Bryson Hill Contra will be the hardest to handle the horn, but don't let that discourage you and take the challenge.
Saxophone for one year before get volentold to play tuba, in a year I was able to get into my states districts band
Hey David I play the saxophone and it has always been my dream to march Drum corps. I wanna march mello next year with the cadets. Do you have any suggestions? Is it possible to learn mello then march DCI?
Since that's what I wanna play... Yeah...
I play alto sax so might try to get a mellophone
I play clarinet and I have a year to get better than all the rest of my band. I have the full support of both of my directors who both marched DCI
Yoooo I’m a sax player and I want to learn trumpet or mello
2 years with Spirit of Atlanta
can i borrow a trumpet any one
what corps accept you without any brass experience????
None. You show them that you can play the horn.
7th Regiment allows woodwind auditions. That's how I got in.
Been playing alto sax for 6 years. I’m planning on auditioning on baritone for the battalion in about a month. Hopefully they see potential in me and give me a contract...
Do percussion.
I went from bari sax to bass and tenor drums
WOOHOO! T-SAX! lol
I know I'm SUPER late to the party, but I know Columbus Saints (DCA corps) is willing to teach woodwind players if they're willing to learn.
not trying to offend but Baritone and Euphonium play more voice like I think it would be a suitable instrument for sax
Anyone have guard tips? I'm a senior but it's my first year and I sucked so bad I was made an alternate. So idk what to do since my time has ran out :/
throw and hope for the best
just please don't hit the rest of us
I play flute but I also already play marimba lol
Plus not to mention your competitors in auditions have years of experience on you
Do Contra. You'll love your life all summer!
Are you being sarcastic? Because I'm no brass player, but I just feel bad for anyone who plays contra. To me, it looks difficult and painful compared to other brass instruments.
;)
thats great!! keep it up :)
I'm a flute player, only been one for four, or five years now, I really want to learn trumpet,.
+Minecraft Swift. do it!... But mello is better.
+K0S0s pshhhhhh Trumpet> !
do it!!! I'm a flute player too, trying to learn how to play trombone. so much fun! working my way onto trumpet. its so exciting. Im hoping to be good enough to make it to dci, i mean how hard could it be? (dies inside)
1:17 BLUECOATS 2014
IMSCREWED nah, that's the closer to Phantom 2008 (which was one of the shows he said loving when he saw it). Also, this came out in 2012, so T/LT wasn't a thing yet lol.
Lol we had someone named Tyler Miller march Cadets this year, come replace him next year and go to crown later
I really want to be in a drum corps, but my band director scares me... :/
Psssssst, you forgot that Finis was in 2008 :3
Why was marching with a bass clarinet awful?
Alex Alcala he said it just felt bad
My band director thinks anyone who borrows an instrument wants to switch. And so doesn't let us borrow.
Why does everyone leave out the trombone it’s the best instrument in the universe
Meaning that I haven't asked to borrow a trumpet yet...
Dude I picked up euph in 3 months and made PC
some times play a sax kinda sucks
